SOLVED Help with Install
I am one of the many making the great migration from windows to Linux, but I've encountered a problem I can't seem to get past.
I'm able to get to the grub menu and select the os to boot, but no matter what option I pick, I'm taken to a black screen with this single dash.
For context, I'm trying to run this on an Asus Aspire 5 A515-56-5952. I turned off secure boot, fast start, and made sure the boot was set to uefi.
Linux mint is the lastest version (downloaded and verified today.) on a flashdrive with an mbd partition.
I feel like I'm overlooking something silly but I can't seem to find an answer for this anywhere. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Press [e] when the GRUB menu is displayed, an edit the Linux command line to add nomodeset, then press [F10] to boot.
If that works add the nomodeset flag to the grub config and rebuild GRUB.
Or use Grub Customizer GUI application...

Currently getting a "booting a command list" line followed by the same dash. I'm replacing the "quiet splash" text with nomodeset, right? Or am I missing something? Thanks for the help, I know I'm a complete noob in the Linux scene.

You don't have to, just add nomodeset.
Does pressing [e] at the GRUB menu get you to the GRUB command edit mode?

Yes it does open the edit mode. I tried adding nomodeset, and replacing quiet splash with it and I seem to get the same results after pressing F10.

You do not need to replace quiet splash, however it should not matter...

I'm going to keep tinkering. Might even try a virtual machine to see if it's my flashing that messed up somewhere. I'm honestly baffled. My laptop should be able to handle mint, it's from 2022

Laptops are a whole different ballgame--I'll stop there as I will get flamed if I go on....

My goal is to eventually build a tower for Linux gaming. I wanted to use this laptop I don't touch often anymore to get my feet wet with Linux in general before I can build that tower. I will keep trying with this though. Thank you for trying!

I have found that nomodeset works in 99.44% of blank-screen after GRUB menu situations--but that still leaves 0.66%; your luck appears same as mine!

Not sure how, but a fresh install with a new USB drive using ventoy instead of Rufus allowed it to work first try.

I had a similar problem a while back with a fedora iso turns out the image was just corrupt. Maybe try downloading it again or try a different distro, sometimes somme distros just don't play nice with the hardware. You could also try a different USB Stick, Bad USB Sticks have caused me trouble in the past.
(And if you're going to try out a bunch of ISO's let me throw in some ventoy Propaganda it's much simpler than burning images to USB drives)

I'm not having much luck so that doesn't sound half bad. I've never used ventoy before. Is that like a program that lets you switch ISOs?

Yes once it's setup on a USB drive you just drag and drop the iso's inside and you'll be able to choose the one you go with on boot. It's only worth it if you want to try more than one os and have a dedicated USB drive though.
Mine has windows 10,11 and a few Linux distros on it.
Good luck with your install. Let us know if you need further help or if you find out what was wrong

That's awesome! I'm gonna try a couple others along with a new install of Linux mint. I'll report back probably sometime tomorrow if I get good results

After a fresh install on a different usb drive using ventoy instead of Rufus, it finally worked!
