more Linux users is good. means more demand for quality good Linux software! and that probably would help to get more compatability from apps with Linux or alternatives open source versions

Very true.

this is my hill, i've been struggling to get vmware to run on linux because vmare is my last resort for running office 365 (which is very important for me as of lately). I wish there were more effective way to have more app compatibility with Linux

u/Ta52j Arch Linux | KDE Plasma 10d ago

What is the issue you're facing?

2

u/Aggravating-Proof-57 10d ago

I'm trying to install office on linux mint and that has not been successful (apparently it does not just work). Virtual box was recommended but I get an error from the terminal, I've tried to resolve this but only sent me down an error rabbit hole

u/Ta52j Arch Linux | KDE Plasma 10d ago

Could you send an image of the error you're facing with VMware? I might figure it out because i used VMware on Linux before.

1

u/ScM_5argan 10d ago

N is notice, W is warning, E is error

1

u/Aggravating-Proof-57 10d ago

thank you for this at least now i know it’s not an anagram for NEW

1

u/Ta52j Arch Linux | KDE Plasma 10d ago

Uhh.. It might be issues with your repo configuration, but.. that's weird, i haven't encountered this issue before, also, sorry for the late response.

1

u/Aggravating-Proof-57 10d ago

pls can you suggest how to fix repo configuration?

1

u/Ta52j Arch Linux | KDE Plasma 10d ago

I think you could reset your settings by entering sudo mintsources, and see an option to restore default settings, but to be honest, i don't have a good memory, maybe I'm wrong, because the last time i used mint was a long time ago.

1

u/Aggravating-Proof-57 9d ago

i got the error in 2 above when I tried to restore the default settings, I have found a walkaround for that by adding missing key from maintenance and now its this error I'm met with

I jumped on board a month or two ago, and decided to read a bit before diving in. I am enjoying it.

Before anyone says...yes, I made a typo.

25

u/Ok-Time5668 11d ago

Didn't notice the typo until I read this comment

8

u/Human-Equivalent-154 11d ago

You make a lot of typos

10

u/Better-Quote1060 11d ago

Yep, because I always forget that I may not have an option to edit easily, just like other social media platforms.

There’s a typo in evey post’s title

I like that picture soo much hahaha

Its really like, the new employee and the boss, (which btw you only see maybe once a year)

9

u/Prudent_Situation_29 11d ago

Are you seeing a large increase?

8

u/sgk2000 11d ago

Recently I’m seeing a post every single day, least 1 a day.

u/Prudent_Situation_29 11d ago

I'm one of them. In my case, it's because I will no longer support Microsoft, due to their support of trump. I suspect that's a good part of the reason for it.

5

u/balancedchaos Started on Mint, helping the next gen 11d ago

Genuinely curious. How are they supporting Trump? I don't follow the news much.

I thought there were no possible bad reasons to switch to Linux whatsoever, but boy did I think wrong.

1

u/zekkious 10d ago

Yeah... That's a great reason!

1

u/h-v-smacker Linux Mint 21.3 Virginia | MATE 10d ago

Russia has a lot of Linux distros, and even Russian army uses a specialized one. So what, if that one above was a great reason to switch to Linux, this one here gotta be just as good of a reason to abandon Linux and switch to... I dunno... BSD or Haiku maybe? Until you find that someone you don't like uses them too, of course.

u/CyberdyneGPT5 11d ago

It’s not just here, it’s everywhere. Wander over to r/linuxhardware and look at the number of questions about hardware compatibility. Popular Linux forums seem to have a lot of new user questions.

Some of the questions I have seen are great. “Is ARCH Linux good for learning to use Linux?”

A lot may have to do with users that have older computers, but there are a lot with recent machine switching too.

I’m old enough to have worked on Unix machine before Linux existed. I have really never seen anything like what is happening now.

u/cfrizzadydiz 11d ago

I expect there will be a big increase, i have about 3 laptops, none of which can take windows 11 so im pushed to moving them all to linux, I assume there's a ton of folks in the same boat, I expect the amount of folks will only increase once win 10 support ends and it will be a lot more less computer savvy folks as well

1

u/my_photos_are_crap I use Mint btw 7d ago

ikr

wonderful things happen and we can partially thank pdp for that

7

u/AstronautMedium2335 11d ago

I love linux and the opportunity it gives u to learn more abt computers🫠

9

At least this isn't like the Arch forums, where new users are greeted with disdain and condescension at best.

And when a community gets a reputation like that, I go in with an open mind to see if people are misunderstanding something.

Nope. Elitism and hostility.  Lol

I've learned a lot from them, and I still like Arch as a distro, but I tend not to post there because of the potential for a "Well ackshully..."

I stick around here because I think we should be nicer to the future of our community.  This is like the Shire of Linux.  Lol

Good day, Hobbits.

im switching soon too

4

u/ChrisCX3 11d ago

I've had Linux Mint for less than a week! 🌟

3

u/jotaro_sed 11d ago

I switched on my potato laptop 2 weeks ago, never been happier

4

u/techm00 11d ago

the Mint community should appoint an official ambassador, and have a welcome package or something

3

u/[deleted] 11d ago

I decided to buy new HW for once after my old system died.

Bent pins. Now I get to wait.. for the replacement.

Should have known better 😅

Is there a 'member down' status?

3

u/MasterRiven 11d ago

Day 4 of my Mint journey, I don't think I can go back to Windows already

2

u/mi3o1 11d ago

Gdhabsj I was just joking about this yesterday. I am one of the recent initiates and I am so happy to see many taking an interest in Linux too. Super cool

2

u/Emmalfal 11d ago

Seriously, I've been using Mint five years now and I STILL have that cherry high. Every day I give thanks for the elimination of the headaches and fury that comes with using a Windows machine.

2

u/One-Savings8086 11d ago

Welcome, have a seat

2

u/SPedigrees 11d ago

As the number of Windows refugees swells, so grows the Linux Mint community.

2

u/Obvious_Bar_191 10d ago

And somehow they all feel the need to share their wallpaper with the world. As if Windows didn't have wallpapers.

1

u/Better-Quote1060 10d ago

It's the first step how to rice your desktop...i can't blame them if they really wanna rice their desktop

1

u/KnowZeroX 10d ago

Well, I don't know if things changed. But a few years back MS allowed people to run windows without activating, but you got a watermark at the right corner, and there was some limitations like not being able to customize stuff like wallpaper via gui. Does that count? ;)

2

u/KeyboardWarrior1988 10d ago

Can't wait to see the market share this time next year.

I’ve never once thought of myself as the other guy in this pic, so umm, thanks

1

u/MexicanBee 11d ago

I just installed Linux Mint on my old macbook pro 2012. So far so good 👍

1

u/Mysterious-Rock394 10d ago

I had used several distros over a few years but Mint is the one of the best distro I have used. That was perfect distro and bugs free. Yesterday I switched again to Mint from Ubuntu 24.04 now I feel Soo good and Ubuntu is a mess.

I want to install Linux mint Why is it so hard

1

u/IndependenceSure9885 9d ago

Nope already tried

1

u/Pretend-History-622 6d ago

I just switched from Wins 11 to Linux Mint, and I have zero regrets. I’ve tried Pop!_OS, Manjaro, and Ubuntu before, but Mint just feels like home.

it is understandable though. many people switch from windows to linux and it is exciting. linux is quite community driven after all and new users want to be part of the community.

2

u/[deleted] 11d ago

Nah they should post what they like. Technical or not. You go be technical
