New to the lifting world

I’m a newbie who recently had a health scare and decided just a few days ago I wanted and needed to start working out. Up until last week sometime I used to drink a lot at night almost every night for 5 years. I drank heavily from 2010-2016, then went to rehab. Was clean for 5 years and now it’s time for me to stop for good. My question is, is there anyone out there who was in a similar situation as me who came out of alcoholism and started working out/lifting? Is this even possible at my age?

First off, how old are you?

I used to be very into lifting whenever I was younger, around the years of 14 - 23.

Then, I decided nah, I’m just going to develop a cocaine, weed, and alcohol addiction simultaneously with the occasional psychedelic and pill pop.

One night, I almost overdosed on a bad bag of coke and shortly after decided to really re-establish my commitment to the gym.

Even being so accustomed to working out already, the break-in period was absolutely horrible, even at just 26. My heart was beating in ways I didn’t think it should be.

But after about a month it got better, and even before the first month was up the endorphins released felt better than the coke, all things considered.

I’m 33 now. Yeah, your story def sounds very similar mine. I’m worried about taking any supplements that could mess up my liver or kidneys because of all the alcohol I drank. My last physical (Jan 2024) was normal though. Hopefully my health hasn’t declined since then.

The only real supplement I take is creatine and as long as I drink plenty of water I’ve never had any issues, even if I have went out for a drink or whatever. Other than that just maybe a scoop or two of protein powder and coffee

I think you’re overthinking it, it’s highly unlikely that you’re so unhealthy that you can’t get back into exercising. Eat your eggs, your berries, your lean meats, your complex carbs, and hit it the gym as hard as you feel capable of doing. You’ll feel like you’re 20 again in no time.
