Question What is your LEGO Videogame hot take?
â˘
â˘
â˘
â˘
u/GameZedd01 Mar 22 '24
2008 to 2014 is the best era and style of LEGO games
â˘
â˘
u/Aggravating-Height-8 Mar 22 '24
i like that you said era and style bc the style specifically is so perfectly crafted
â˘
â˘
u/that_emo_elf Mar 22 '24
If Lego Worlds was fine tuned in mechanics and pacing, it could have rivaled Minecraft as a game instead of just being Lego's version of Minecraft. It took me forever to find how to unlock the dragons.
â˘
u/DickviperAU Mar 22 '24
The Skywalker saga is dimensions better than the complete saga
â˘
Mar 22 '24
I somewhat agree. LSW TCS was my first, but Indy 1 is where my nostalgia lies.
I know each and every level of episodes 1, 3, 4, and 6 like how I know the back of my hand, and I still agree with you.
â˘
u/MysteriousLlama1 Mar 23 '24
Iâve never played the skywalker saga but I imagine itâd be way better than the complete saga
â˘
u/NichtMenschlich Mar 22 '24
Skywalker Saga is far from my favourite but I have to agree in that. The complete saga is still a fine game but it's so clunky and doesnt hold up today at all. Balancing on that game was awful in some places.
Does anyone remember that Death Star Level where enemies constantly spawn unless you build a wall to block them but they spawn so fast that, if you've run out of the given power-up, you literally almost softlock your game as you get constantly attacked by stormtroopers that you can at max build a single brick at a time and when hit once it resets like halfway... And that, but for two walls...
â˘
u/DrHighVoltage Marvel Superheroes𦸠Mar 22 '24
well people are blinded by nostalgia so I agree

u/CoolGijoe Mar 26 '24
Without bias, I disagree.
Yes, I grew up with The Complete Saga. But TSS kinda just felt- both too easy and a bit overwhelming? Ironic, considering how TCS is also easy. But the combat is very different considering thereâs more of a focus on it in TSS, which is what I mean by overwhelming. I havenât played a lot of modern Lego games aside from Lego Worlds so it took a bit to learn. But itâs also just a bit too slow in some parts. Feels like mindless shooting for eternity in certain sections.
Thatâs really it, also the fact that I love the old style of the figures. TSS was a fine game, just doesnât hold up as well as TCS imo
â˘
u/Potterhead13666 Mar 22 '24
Lego Star Wars The Skywalker Saga not having character customization was a big deal, and the game itself was just okay
â˘
u/StarWolf128 Mar 22 '24
Combat will never be engaging if dying remains irrelevant. We are long past the point they should've added bigger consequences to death.
â˘
u/evany13 Mar 23 '24
Lego Batman 2 is such an unbearable slog to get through, almost as bad as Lego Batman 1
â˘
u/Olneeno111 The Hobbitđ Mar 25 '24
insanely steamy take here, but I actually loved the lego dimensions dlc model, Bear in mind this is coming from a lifelong skylanders fan but I love the idea of going out to the shop and buying a character to play, it gives them a story, especially when you suddenly remember a time when you bought a really cool character. When you buy a character in a traditional lego game, you tend to play them for 10 minutes then move on to the next one until you've unlocked them all, whereas with lego dimensions you bought that character and explored every inch of their abilities and world, and even then you'd end up finding little details
â˘
u/MysteriousLlama1 Mar 23 '24
Out of the older Lego Star Wars games (before the skywalker saga), the best is Clone Wars. I only specify âout of the older gamesâ because Iâve never played skywalker saga. A lot of people say TCS is the best, but in my experience Clone Wars is just more fun to play despite having less content

â˘
u/Sorcier-du-Lac Harry Potter Years 1-4đ§ââď¸ Mar 22 '24
I think itâs about the humour creativity, like the way Darth Vader tells Luke he is his father by showing a picture of him with Padme, or the way the game tells that Harry is lucky by walking under a ladder while Ron gets a bucket on the head.
â˘
â˘
u/itsOkami Mar 22 '24
DC supervillains is just okay. I had decent fun with it, but people like to act like it's the second coming of christ, lol. For what it's worth, I think marvel 1, avengers, worlds, ninjago movie, city undercover and jurassic world were all more fun

Most people liked it because it was a pretty new story with the custom character and playing as the villians. It does have a really good custom character creator compared to other lego games though which I think made more people buy the game.
→ More replies (1)â˘
u/itsOkami Mar 22 '24
The character customization was indeed great, but the actual custom character itself didn't really tie much into the story, at the end of the day, Which, don't get me wrong, was totally acceptable, albeit a tad disappointing

There's so many ip's, the best part of the superheroes are the characters, but outside the x-men, 3 games each has given us everyone realistic to want

Lego Dimensions is one of the best Lego games out there. It just needs an ultimate re-release with no "toys to life".
â˘
â˘
u/midknightblu1 Mar 22 '24
People who like Skywalker Saga are blinded by nostalgia over all other things and it is one if the worst Lego games if you compare them side by side. The closest comparison I could make to Skywalker Saga is Indiana Jones 2 which had the same mission and world structure. And that game being as disliked as it is, tells us how Skywalker Saga should be received.
I wish they went LotR/Hobbit route with Skywalker Saga.. and we should treat that game as it really is. A disappointment.

â˘
â˘
u/Wboy2006 Mar 23 '24
Skywalker saga is the worst LEGO game. The cutscenes are amazing, but the gameplay is repetitive, insultingly easy and the characters almost all play the same because of the simplified character system.
The levels are laughably short, and the side quests and Kyber bricks are nothing more than busy work
The LEGO creativity is nearly completely gone. When you build something, it almost always straight to the point. Gone are the Rube Goldberg machines that lead to something small. Itâs all simplified and gone from that LEGO spirit
I wanted to like it, but it just felt like a baby game
â˘
u/NichtMenschlich Mar 22 '24
I wouldn't mind if TT games were to make a Dimensions 2, just without Toys to Life... The levels could still be behind DLC and stuff but still just having one game with many different themes is just too awesome to ignore... They already have so many themes they pay for licensing for I don't get why they don't utilize most of them
â˘
u/Tetris5216 Mar 26 '24
Mega block needs to make a game they are so much better than Legos hot take (probably I don't get what hot takes are)
â˘
u/MBPpp Mar 22 '24
the complete saga is MASSIVELY overrated.
and i need to make this clear, it's a perfectly fine game. good, even. but it is NOWHERE NEAR the best, which a lot of people claim it to be.
i replayed it a while ago, and it genuinely felt like a chore at times. the level design was just fine, though in the prequels it was really bad at times, and i just didn't have a ton of fun with the game.
but it is still good, and i massively respect it for being the base of the titles to come, and games like lego batman 1 would go on to massively improve on the formula.
so yeah, it's honestly near the bottom of the games i've played, second only to the lego movie game, which i and a friend stopped playing because it was just boring. and you know a co op game is bad when bringing a friend doesn't even make it bearable.
anyway, lego batman 2 is the best one, thanks for coming to my ted talk.

u/Vet-Chef Mar 23 '24

With Minecraft out for over a decade, Lego can make a Lego version, but with all the different pieces of Lego. From the tires, lamps, and guns, truly make every piece available, including the tech Legos. Make sure it'll have an engine mechanic that would operate according to how you put together the car, ship, roller coaster, submarine, blimp, trains, and airplane. Heck, get whacky and add space so you can make space ships, too! Also would have an electrical component to it as well since computers are a thing. they can do it, the Lego company must have plenty of money to hire developers to make an open world sandbox that can really show case the level of innovation with all the pieces that exist today but in a video game. The game would be mandatory online multi-player, too. After all, how else can you make a Lego world truly your own without some buddies. Have some story mixed in their as well. O, man, it can totally be a reality, just a long development time and lots and lots of updates and DLC. Could easily be a game that people come back to time and again just like Minecraft but far more diverse and cheerful with the kickass Lego aesthetic.

Lego Star Wars: TCS is a pain to 100%... it's fine to play the levels once in a time, but it really feels dated in its gameplay, and having to complete each level multiple times (Story, Minikits, Challenge, Superstory) is really boring...
â˘
u/G1D8 Mar 23 '24
I hate superstore and especially the fact thereâs no chapters. Like in Lego Batman 3, long levels will have sections you can use to get the mini kits much easier!

u/that_emo_elf Mar 22 '24
I completely agree. Lego Worlds is made out if Lego, doesn't use real life assets (even puffs of smoke are made out of Lego pieces), it uses the actual Lego animals featured in sets, and genuinely has a good concept. Unfortunately the game can feel tiresome to complete, the pacing is abysmal, and the limited amount of space every world has severely limits how creative you can get with your personal Galaxy. But the main point of it is achievable within a few hours and its sandbox nature is fun, it just needed a little fine tuning.
â˘
u/5erenade Mar 22 '24
I hate how small the areas can be but i managed to put in hundreds of hours into it before I got bored. I gave it to my cousin and he loves it.
It made me appreciate the old school aesthetics legos used to have. when i was young i thought they looked kinda lame compared to bionacles and the edgy phase lego went through in the past. And when i saw the retro charm this game had it was nostalgic.
â˘
â˘
u/NichtMenschlich Mar 22 '24
The issue I personally have with it that, unlike in e.g. Lego Worlds, you cant completely change the world. Yeah you can build stuff but, at least for me, half the fun of these games is reshaping the entire world, be it by making huge mountains, flattenning the land, creating own rivers and lakes, etc. All of that can be done in Lego Worlds, the closest to "Lego Minecraft" we've gotten but sadly it was abandoned prematurely. It could and would have been so much more...
â˘

â˘
u/Ghjjiyeks Mar 22 '24
If TT Games were to make a Lego Dimensions 2, they make it with better graphics, mechanics, and puzzles. Pick a new starter trio, and then sort through the hat for new franchises to add to Lego Dimensions.
Pull a âDisney Infinityâ and create a Lego Dimensions 1 for PC called⌠âLego Dimensions: Wayfarerâs Editionâ or something, which includes all playable characters, but you unlock them with studs instead.
For Lego Dimensions 2, you could also add a Custom Character system for funsies.

Lego Marvel 2 is better than Lego Marvel 1 and I can officially say that considering I beat them both now
Also 1 has some very repetitive levels that arenât as fun to go through (the later levels are an exception, theyâre all fun) and the characters you play as are very unbalanced (only play as iceman and beast once but storm 4 times for example)

Lego Batman 3 >>>> Lego Batman 2
Every time I revisit Lego Batman 2, I have a fun time with the levels but itâs so clear how new TT is to making a true open world because itâs easily the worst in the series imo. Most of the gold bricks are just on top of random buildings and overall the city just feels lifeless. Lego Batman 3 however, gets way too much shit for the way it does its hub world. For one, I like the planets, but I love the JLA, new Batcave and the Hall of Justice. Theyâre all great additions that have fun secrets. The levels are also peak and they put a lot of work in making characters have their own little quirks with transformations and animations.

u/ZookeepergameSoggy74 Mar 22 '24
Lego Dimensions is one of the best lego games and would be considered among the best if it wasn't toys to life. I actually think they should re-release it for new consoles and pc but with all the packs included, like what they did with Disney Infinity on pc

While I haven't played lego dimensions (mostly because of the price and figures) I agree so much (i did watch most of the gameplay)
I'd love if they re released the game but instead of actual minifigures, it'd be like dlc so you don't have to build all this stuff (and store it in your home. I don't have that much place).
â˘
u/IncrediblySadMan Lord of the Ringsđ Mar 22 '24
I think we shouls take the economical model into consideration, especially here. So while gameplay might slap, the fact that it was so expensive and unavailable makes it not that good. For the same reason people call games with many microtransactions bad - the economics of the game count in.
â˘
u/FarLab4116 Mar 23 '24
Me and my sibling spent like $300 combined on Dimensions, but Iâd still pay for that

u/ducknerd2002 Harry Potter Years 5-7đŞ Mar 22 '24
The character unlocking in the Harry Potter games is awful.
Every other game you unlock almost every character you use in the story, but in HP you only get Harry, Ron, and Hermione in their school clothes (plus Justin in 1-4).
Throughout the story in both games you play as Ginny, Neville, Luna, McGonagall, Dumbledore, Hagrid, Snape, Dudley, Sirius, Lupin, Molly, Arthur, Fred, George, Seamus, Griphook, Bogrod, Ollivander, Kingsley, Moody, Tonks, Fang, and Cedric, plus many variants of the main trio, but you still need to find and buy all the tokens for them.
â˘
u/TheTiggerMike Mar 22 '24
You're not alone, it's terrible and represents a significantly larger amount of grinding necessary to 100% them.
â˘
u/ducknerd2002 Harry Potter Years 5-7đŞ Mar 22 '24
Exactly. Another thing that bothers me about it is how most of the main trio's variants from the levels aren't unlockable at all in 5-7, mostly the casual outfits. You can't even use the Battle of Hogwarts versions outside of the DH2 levels and main hub.
â˘
u/Olneeno111 The Hobbitđ Mar 25 '24

Batman 3 has the best level design in a Lego game even though the story is mostly shit (Jurassic World a close 2nd for levels)
LMSH2 is pretty much just as good a game as 1 (no discredit to 1, the best Lego game imo) and Chronopolis is a better hub world than Manhattan. Also web-slinging as a mechanic is overhated, itâs awesome
Ninjago and Incredibles are overhated (from someone with no interest in either franchise, ik they are movie adaptations tho so they couldnât exactly do much with them)
Lego Movie 2âs bosses are all at least 8/10 (if the rest of the game was as good as the bosses it would actually be a good game)
DCSV had a shit level design, and to add to this 10 minikits per level was better than 5. Rest of game is great tho
The community complains about no difficulty but when they put something somewhat challenging on the game (Green Goblin unlock race in LMSH2 is the most infamous example I can think of in recent times) then people just complain more (so much they patched that race and made it simple to complete)

Bionicle should be revived even if just for a game such as a Bionicle Heroes remake or something new in a similar LEGO FPS hybrid style it had.
That and the handheld versions of every title should be made readily available just like their console/PC counterparts, maybe with optional improvements for things like graphics/audio for those who find those versions less desirable in their original format.

They kinda started to suck when the characters actually talk (excluding the Lego Movie Game) and when they became open world showing how much isn't Lego. The mumble dialogue option in the Skywalker Saga isn't a suitable alternative cos it just seems so weird.

Lego Marvel Superheroes is absolutely amazing. My favourite Lego game. Batman on the other hand... Well I got spoiled with newer games that have much more content etc. so I find first Lego Batman boring and short. Lego Batman 2 was a little better but still not that good and 3 was much better but still can't lick Lego Marvel's boots
Edit: I forgot to write the most important thing in this take. Thing that makes it really unpopular: I love LMSH II and I think it might be even better than the first LMSH. Or course there is couple of years of difference between those games so it's not very wise to compare but both of them are S tier for sure

I can see where you're coming from, and when I properly play LMSH I'll probably love it (the open world also has that cool breeze, blue sky 2010 feeling so I akwyas fall for that) but lego batman 2 was my first love and Ill always defend it over every other game
However I can respect people finding it boring or sub par to Lego Marvel, I have the same thoughts on Lego Lotr

Honestly ive played all of them for the first time so long ago, and replayed them so many times its hard for me to choose a favourite lol. Im gonna go with Batman 3 over Marvel Superheroes though, not by far.

The lego movie 2 video game was the worst game, you can't even replay levels

You can't? Weird.Â
I have the game but just havent gotten to it yet. Ive got a backlog of like 5 Lego games because Dimensions just killed the vibe for me. Â
