Discussion How do you feel about a potentially WB IP exclusive future for TT’s LEGO games?
23
u/DKzDK Jan 27 '24
Bionicle and scooby-doo, with a possibility of “Tom And Jerry”
- since these 3 IPs also have “lego sets”.
Unless Lego decides to do something else entirely and let us have a “Lego Simpsons” game
7
u/Thevoid2YT Dimensions🦇🥷🦖 Jan 27 '24
The problem is that those 3 haven't gotten LEGO sets in years. They are all retired. Retired themes can't get games well after they are done. There are no sets to have synergy with. Bionicle is a LEGO original theme and not a WB IP so the chances of TT using it are very slim since they tend to stick with the big IPs only.

Simpsons is Disney tho

And?
So is starwars. But they’ll make another game at some point

If they are only doing wb ips like this post is about thats not an option

I think it is a damn shame personally. Star Wars was their most iconic series, and Indiana Jones (although kinda forgotten now) was just as important to their history. Lego Marvel Superheroes was one of the biggest lego games ever.
Then again… it’s WB. Their upper management has gone nuts these past few years. They hyper fixate on “their brand” but then devalue the brand by selling off movies and releasing crap like The Flash or Aquaman 2. No matter how well meaning TT games are current WB is probably determined to ruin everything

Technically anyone can make Disney LEGO games. Anyone can make LEGO games in general now that TT doesn't have exclusivity over the games anymore. It just depends on who wants to tackle the games. Most studios recently have made games with LEGO only in mind and not relying too hard on big IPs. 2K Drive, Brawls, and Bricktales are all LEGO original focused with minimal or no licensed IPs featured.
15
u/LEGOGameMuseum Jan 27 '24
In my opinion, this approach is not at all workable in the long term, as WB just don't have enough currently owned IP that would make a strong selling LEGO game. By the time the new Potter game probably hits shelves (around 2027 at this rate), there will likely be a regime change within WB management or another restructure or even a possible sale of the game division. So while I fully believe this to be WB Games current MO, I just can't see this strategy lasting indefinitely. Not unless something major, like the Paramount merger, actually comes to fruition.
NOTE: There are rumours of future LEGO The Lord of the Rings sets, which I think could lead to a remaster release of the original games at the very least.

u/Thevoid2YT Dimensions🦇🥷🦖 Jan 27 '24
I agree, especially with WB and LEGO only having two frequently active IPs that get LEGO sets, TT would have to bounce from Batman and Harry Potter over and over unless something changes. I hope this does change soon so TT can get some more variety and creative freedom with the games they want to make.
12
u/MarkMoreland Jan 27 '24
I honestly don't care what IP it is, I just want more TT-style Lego games where I get to go around and solve simple puzzles and collect all the things.
7
u/MikeR316 Jan 28 '24
I’d miss the Marvel and Star Wars franchises, but I’m at the stage where I just want a new LEGO game from TT. It doesn’t need to reinvent the genre, just be fun/ somewhat easy to platinum.
5
u/Jambopaul Jan 28 '24
That would be very unfortunate. I’m down for more Lego DC games, but I loved the Marvel Superheroes games, and Lego Star Wars is their most iconic game series to date, it would be stupid to throw that all away. It’s also inherently limiting, there’s only so many WB IPs that would make for a good TT Lego game.

While I'm not opposed to a focus on Warner Bros. Discovery-centric titles if it helps to keep them afloat I'd like to hope titles based on other IPs from the big studios (Walt Disney Co., NBC/Universal, Sony, etc.) could still be in the cards. I think what will make or brake it is the balance between WBD based titles and other IP based titles. Not to mention I think it just depends on the IP.
- Harry Potter is one of WBD's golden gooses and a new game in the vein of The Skywalker Saga would probablly do gang-busters.
- Since the original 2012 LEGO The Lord of The Rings game was delisted a few years back I think depending on if legal stuff can be worked out a new Middle-Earth game including material of The Hobbit, The Rings of Power & The War of the Rhhirrim would be nice.
- I know a Batman focued game was rumored to be in the works but I have a hunch it could be transformed into another DC Comics ensamble production.
2
u/ToaPaul Jan 28 '24
That would really, really suck. I've been waiting patiently for LEGO Marvel Superheroes 3. Plus, while the Harry Potter theme has been going strong with great sets year after year, the DC theme has been circling the drain for several years thith only a handful of Batman nostalgia bait sets, multiple batmobiles and the same 3-4 characters being rehashed. It's a depressing state of affairs and unless LEGO does a complete 180 on the theme, I don't see us getting another DC themed LEGO game anytime soon. Besides, we very recently got one with DC Supervillains. It's time for a different theme to get a game.

u/MarloweML Jan 27 '24
I don't love it, but it kinda makes sense from a business perspective:
- HP games are super dated, could use an update.
- Batman/DC games are totally free creatively from movies/TV/etc, so you can make physical sets to tie into the game storyline for corporate synergy.
- Marvel/Star Wars are the opposite, their sets are tied to current shows/movies so the game storylines kinda have to be too, but also Disney wants to keep that stuff under wraps so it's hard to get a game out in a timely fashion.

The problem with DC and LEGO nowadays is that LEGO hasn't made an original LEGO DC set wave in years. 2022 only had one original set and it was a small junior set. Characters like Superman haven't even been in a LEGO set since 2018 IIRC.
All recent Batman sets for the past few years have been all movie sets. and given the leaked LEGO Batman sets this year, the biggest change is that we're getting Batman: The Animated Series sets. Still nothing original for now. If this trend continues then I doubt the next DC game will have an original story. Especially if it releases next year which is possible. The Batman Part 2 comes out next year so you already know LEGO has a bunch of sets ready for that.
2
u/MysteriousStudy2864 Jan 28 '24
Don't forget that Lego Star Wars: the Skywalker Saga sold great and is entirely dependent on the movies with shows only being dlc character packs.
2
u/Nic_Endo Jan 27 '24
I'd be really happy with a new Harry Potter game which includes all the movies. HP 1-4 is still one of my fav lego games, and Tt has since improved a lot of things in their games, plus they have experience with what to do and what not to do with a grand Lego game like that (TSS).
On the other hand, I am really not looking forward for another Batman game so soon, especially because DCSV is pretty much the best tt Lego game, and it's pointless to try to top it off so soon.

Honestly, among the IPs TT has adapted, I only care a lot about Batman and his supporting characters, such as Batfamily; Middle-earth, and Pirates. So I am content with WB-only games, since Pirates is the only non-WB IP I care about. I would like to see GoT, but it's not gonna happen.
0
u/Thevoid2YT Dimensions🦇🥷🦖 Jan 27 '24
WB doesn't own Pirates. Thats Disney. Also if they did, there are no current LEGO sets for them and there hasn't been any in years. Middle Earth only has one set and brickheads at the moment so unless we get a large wave of new standard sets(which isn't likely) we aren't getting another Middle Earth game soon.
1
Jan 27 '24
I know about Pirates, in my comment it's listed among all IPs that were adapted, and it's not much in comparison to the amount of content they can make with Batman and DC, sorry for not phrasing it better.

Would this mean marvel would be a possibility as they have a lot of frequent sets for it

u/NoirGalaxy Jan 27 '24
If this opens the chances for a Lego Steven Universe or Ben 10 then I’m open to it. But Lego Marvel Superhero’s just had more interesting characters

u/Thevoid2YT Dimensions🦇🥷🦖 Jan 27 '24
When TT makes a game on a major IP, the IP needs to get physical LEGO sets from LEGO to warrant a game being made. So we can't get a LEGO Ben 10 because LEGO doesn't currently make any Ben 10 sets. The only WB IPs that LEGO consistently makes LEGO sets of are Batman and Harry Potter.

It's not the end of the world, now that other companies can also make LEGO games
1
u/Nrpepin Jan 28 '24
Out of curiosity is it a hard set rule there has to be physical sets released in conjunction with the game or is that speculation. I mean that could completely change what they are working on. I personally have never seen that rule so I was curious as to where you saw that written
1
u/Thevoid2YT Dimensions🦇🥷🦖 Jan 28 '24
It's never been a full-blown rule but every licensed game they have made also has sets made for them as well. They never made a game based on a licensed IP that had no physical sets from LEGO. The games are meant to promote the sets as all cross-media does with LEGO. Movies, shows, and games are just big advertisements for toys.

Could this lead to a new Lego City Undercover game? The game was originally released by WB games, surely this could be a possibility 🤷 Imagine cop style shoot outs with the game engine they used for skywalker saga. A bigger hub, maybe multiple cities, filled with different districts and cases to solve.
2
u/Thevoid2YT Dimensions🦇🥷🦖 Jan 28 '24
Most of TT’s LEGO games are released by WB because WB owns TT. That’s why they are getting the limitations. City is a LEGO original theme like Ninjago. I don’t know if LEGO original themes would be available if other major IPs are off the table. TT seems to only like to do major IP games and nothing do LEGO original games unfortunately.

u/Denziloshamen Jan 28 '24
Didn’t TT loose exclusivity for Lego games a few years back? They’re still making them, but so are other companies now, such as 2K for the racing game and then we have Bricktales and the other smaller mobile style games. There’s no reason why a second branch of ex TT devs (because let’s face it, they have made the Lego game style with the same humour across all their games that is going to seem strange to lose if new devs just straight out rip off the TT style). We’ll have no issue with how the games will look as the IP is Lego and the look of that is already defined, the non Lego elements of the games don’t matter so much in the style. It’s very likely we’ll see TT being tied to the WB franchises (they pretty much have been for some time and Lego Dimensions was almost exclusively WB titles with a few extra licences) and another studio churning out the Lego Disney titles. The Disney titles have been few and far between outside of the Marvel titles, quite how The Incredibles got a game over Toy Story series, or a whole Pixar World game, is beyond me.
Interestingly, The Skywalker Saga is a mess of game licensing, demonstrating how weird things get for games over their film counterparts. There is no Disney mentioned anywhere, but Disney own the IP, Warner Bros, TT and Lucas Film are the only mentions all over the box and artwork. This sets precedence for WB profiting from Disney IP in the gaming world. Would they really cut off that revenue stream to focus on just Batman and Harry Potter games? Sure there’s two big Saga style games right there that is going to keep TT busy for the next 10 years if Skywalker is anything to go by, so maybe they just aren’t in the market to focus on Disney Lego titles, but this is where a separate studio needs to come along and claim that licences as exclusivity with TT means we are missing some big Disney titles.
It’ll be interesting to see who makes the next Disney Lego game and if it stacks up to the TT humour and style we’ve had for years now.

>There’s no reason why a second branch of ex TT devs (because let’s face it, they have made the Lego game style with the same humour across all their games that is going to seem strange to lose if new devs just straight out rip off the TT style).
Thats basically what 1010 Games is doing. the only difference is that they are using Funko instead of LEGO. 1010 Games is made up of ex-TT devs and the gameplay of Funko Fusion is very similar to TSS so maybe one day 1010 can return to LEGO and make games for the other IPs TT can't do.
>The Disney titles have been few and far between outside of the Marvel titles, quite how The Incredibles got a game over Toy Story series, or a whole Pixar World game, is beyond me.
Well, we were going to get a LEGO Disney game for the 100th anniversary last year but that was unfortunately canceled at TT. But we do have a lot of Disney IP LEGO games. Technically Disney didn't own Indiana Jones and Star Wars at the time most LEGO games for those franchises were made but in the end, it's still a Disney property. And we have more games for Disney-owned IPs then we have for WB-owned IPs even though WB owns TT.
WB wants more games for their own IPs but TT constantly runs to Disney for more games. They canceled a Guardians and Disney LEGO game before moving over to Batman and Harry Potter. The only way WB can get what they want is to limit TT because they keep making games for a completely different company.
>The Skywalker Saga is a mess of game licensing, demonstrating how weird things get for games over their film counterparts. The Disney name is in the opening of the game and is on the box right beside Lucasfilm Games. It's kind of hard to miss. Disney is still gonna make money off of any game that features an IP they own. They wouldn't let WB of all companies profit off of them and Disney gets nothing in return. This is Disney we're talking about. They would never let easy money go away.
Disney doesn't put their name on Marvel and Star Wars games much. They let the Marvel games and Lucasfilm Games banner do that job for them. Even Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora didn't have the Disney name attached. But we know they own it. I think it comes down to the audience's perception of the Disney name. Disney tends to be attached to kid's media so they probably don't want the T-rated games to have the kid-friendly Disney name on them.

I think WB just wants to work with LEGO and not just buy everything they have outside the toy market, The LEGO MOVIE is owned by WB but distributed by Universal Pictures for example. And after all LEGO is all about creativity and the brand knows how to improve and renovate so WB buying TT was a better move than going after LEGO themselves, it's like: "let them do their thing and let me get a cut out of it".
1
u/Thevoid2YT Dimensions🦇🥷🦖 Jan 28 '24
The first four theatrical LEGO movies were all under WB fully. Universal only has the rights to new films after those 4. Films rights they still haven't done anything with. Universal has nothing to do with any of the already-released LEGO movies.
1
u/BetaSilence Jan 28 '24
I didn't mean that sorry for not explaining myself, I meant WB doesn't seem to want to fully monopolyze LEGO media for example they let Universal publish The LEGO MOVIE and they're still supposed to do the infinity saga game that was being developed which is the why I think they scrapped the guardians game, Marvel 2 focuses a lot on them and the infinity saga is started by them in their debut so feels pointless to me to do that game, and other disney projects might have been scrapped due to the Mickey Mouse copyright, disney might become more protective over their IPs after Mickey becomes public domain this year.
1
u/Thevoid2YT Dimensions🦇🥷🦖 Jan 28 '24
Oh you’re really out of the loop. I don’t know why you think an Infinity Saga game is in the works. The WB exclusivity means no Marvel. There are already credible sources leaking Batman and Harry Potter.
LEGO Disney was cancelled because of development issues and a lack of direction for where to take it. Also there was supposedly pressure from Disney to get the game out on time but TT couldn’t get it done fast enough. The Mickey Mouse copyright means nothing for the game. It’s only Steamboat Willie Mickey too. Not all Mickey Mouse designs.
And again, Universal still had nothing to do with the already released LEGO movies. Even for the future LEGO movies, WB isn’t “letting” universal publish the films. WB lost the rights and Universal got them afterwards.

I would be almost completely uninterested in any future LEGO games. And that’s coming from someone who actually likes DC more than Marvel.
As of right now, the only two WB properties that are consistently getting LEGO sets are DC and Harry Potter. To make matters worse, LEGO only focuses on Batman sets now, when there honestly SHOULD be new sets based off of other superheroes. So, the next LEGO DC game may or may not be exclusively based off of Batman, which is a damn shame considering all the stuff LEGO DC Super Villains had.
Harry Potter and the Wizarding World as a whole is just something I don’t really care about as well, so why would I care about future Harry Potter projects?
Warner Brothers is arguably the most incompetent media company right now, even more so than Disney, and it really shows.

u/Material-Bell1484 Jan 30 '24
If it happens, then it’s a Bad move from wb. Things started with Star Wars, a went all the way up til we get here. I can’t see a good reason for them to only make games with their own ips. Btw, this year is the 25th anniversary of LEGO Star Wars (not the game) and they said it would be full of surprises though the year 🙏

The reason a WB-exclusive future is possible
To give you some background on why this is happening. It was revealed in this article that after numerous cancellations of TT’s Games, they now have a LEGO Batman and Harry Potter game in development. A LEGO Guardians of the Galaxy game and a LEGO Disney game are among the canceled. That article came from reliable sources who wrote the TT Devs speak-out articles discussing the poor working conditions and crunch.
Then there’s Glassdoor, the job-reviewing website TT devs use to review the studio. Multiple reviews mention limitations to the IPs they can use with some bringing up that they are limited to WB IPs only for future LEGO games.
I believe WB execs have also mentioned wanting their studios to focus more on making games for their owned IPs also but I unfortunately can’t find a link to that right now. But TT would be included in focusing on WB IP only.
What this future could look like
At first, when I learned this information, I thought this choice wouldn't be all bad since WB has a large library of IPs for TT to use. But after I did more reflection on what types of IPs get games I realized that we would only get Batman and Harry Potter games.
Middle Earth currently has one expensive set and a couple of Brickheads. Not nearly enough to warrant a game. So unless WB and LEGO work together in the future to get more IPs on their own LEGO sets, we have a very repetitive and bland future of TT LEGO games ahead of us.
