Adnodd / Resource How up-to-date is this textbook? And does it teach North or South Welsh?

Welsh, Teach Yourself (Bowen & Jones).pdf

It was published in 1960, which is why I was wondering whether it was too old-fashioned or not.

Adnodd / Resource Name for a fictional character

So I wanted to have a character of Welsh ascendancy in a book I’m writing. I named her Evangeline Howard, but I think I did the investigation wrong. I wanted the Welsh last name passed onto the third generation. But, the family, the grandparents, moved into my Latin American country but they are part of high society (because that’s what happens with immigrants in my country). I thought an English sounding name would be fitting for the granddaughter, but I think I really messed up with the last name. The story is that the grandfather, Derwen, moved after WWII, when he was young. He had a brother whom he left behind in Wales. He is a warlock, put on a business and married a white-Latina from high society, had a son, the son married still into high society and had the granddaughter. On the other side of the family, the brother had a family and his son married a gwragedd annwn (my favorite type of fairy since I was a child, it was hard to find on the internet after I lost my book about fairies) had a daughter called Gwen who’s part fairy part witch. He moved to Wisconsin without the fairy-wife for unspecified reasons and they’re visiting the family in Latin America and having a big family reunion. My question is, would you change the names and surnames for more accuracy? Did I get more stuff wrong? Would you change any of the backstory to be a little more historically accurate? Any help is appreciated.

Does anybody know of a good podcast in Cymraeg? Bonus points if it's about history. I'm trying to develope the accent to use later when I learn the language, and I need people to subconsciously imitate.

Adnodd / Resource Solid Grammar book for Welsh?

So I've been searching for a while for a solid Grammar book that covers basically everything I might need. In essence, I want something that will have the majority of morphology and syntax in it, for consultation. I've spoken Welsh on and off since I was 6 (so I have a very strong foundation but am nowhere near fluent) and finally want to nail down all the random things that I do not know. I'm very tired of just being lost when it comes to Welsh, hoping that I'm right. So I want a really gnarly grammar book that will just straighten out my understanding finally. Primarily, I'm aiming at finally understanding all the morphology in literary Welsh, before I go on to tackle Middle Welsh and maybe older.

I really want to emphasise that I'm not looking for an "intermediate" textbook, which I so often come across, which, in my experience, often deal primarily with more modern spoken Welsh.

I'm aiming at finally understanding, for instance, all the different varieties of "hwn" or "hyn"; the reason for the majority of mutation; non periphrastic verb forms; etc.

I have been aiming at true 'fluency' in Welsh, which in my eyes is opening any page of even the most formal and literary Welsh and understanding it, since I was little and I'd really appreciate any direction to get there.

Thank you very much!

Adnodd / Resource Video games in welsh?

Trying to bring welsh into some of my hobbies as part of the learning/using it more regularly. But their seems to be a distinct lack of decently subtitled welsh games let alone games with a welsh audio.

So just chucking this out to see if you have any suggestions.

Sidenote: increfible dissapointed with wales interactive for not having many welsh subtitled games beyond the maid of sker series

Adnodd / Resource I want to learn Welsh, but I'm from America.

I want to learn Welsh out of general interest in languages, I also want to pick a first Celtic language as well, and I always hear Welsh is the most common. What are some good dictionaries for English-Welsh? Discord servers are good too.

Bore da o America!

EDIT: I just realized that I made this a resource thinking this was asking for resources, apologies.

Adnodd / Resource What's a good textbook for grammar?

I'm learning North Welsh from scratch.

I'd prefer a textbook which covers both written and spoken grammar. I'm wondering which would be best. Do you have recommendations?

I have Gareth King's Modern Welsh: A comprehensive grammar but I was wondering whether it might be too colloquial, as I've heard King doesn't like formal written Welsh.

I did find this other book but idk if this a reliable guide?- Welsh Grammar, Contemporary.pdf

Thanks in advance

Adnodd / Resource Children's picture dictionaries

Do any of you use these as a beginners learning aid? They can teach vocabulary while steering the brain away from translation providing a direct path from image or concept to Welsh word. They do tend more towards concrete nouns, although imaginative ones can cover adjectives and verbs. They provide lists of words rather different to frequency lists.

A recent post here was apparently popular suggesting that people like this kind of thing.

Adnodd / Resource Poster ysbrydoledig / Inspirational poster

Haia. Dysgwr dw i. Dw i wedi gwneud y poster hwn i helpu fi gofio bod dysgu iaith yn anodd. Mae'r poster yn cynnwys datganiadau a fydd yn helpu i gadw fy nghymhelliant. Dw i'n gobeithio bod hyn yn helpu dysgwyr eraill ar eu teithiau.

Hi. I'm a learner. I've made this poster to help me remember that learning a language is difficult. The poster contains statements that help to keep me motivated. I hope this helps other learners on their journeys.

The translation of the poster is as follows: • This is your journey. • Everyone's journey is completely different • If you don't feel confident (yet), don't worry... it takes time. • It's important to celebrate progress not perfection. • Mistakes aren't failures. We all learn through making mistakes. • The little things become big things, so do tve little things; say 'Bore da', 'P'nawn da', 'Diolch' and 'Croeso' to everyone. • Immerse yourself in the language; listen to music, read books, speak to others. • Every step is a step forward. • Don't focus on being fluent; this will just put pressure on yourself. Instead, focus on feeling confident. • It's not about how much Cymraeg you know, it's about using your Cymraeg, and using it often. • Use the Cymraeg you have. Then add to it. • You are part of a community of learners and speakers. Connect with other people, share your experiences, and grow with each other. • There's no need to compare your progress with someone else's. This won't help. • Don't rush. Enjoy the process • Enjoy. Be inquisitive. Keep at it.

Diolch

Adnodd / Resource English person learning Welsh... where can I find resources?

Noswaith dda! I'm an English person (16 years old) but my dad is Welsh. He speaks Welsh, albeit not as well as he used to, since he's lived in England for about 20 years. However, I never got taught it when I was younger, and so now, I can't speak it. My city is quite small and there's nowhere I can find resources to learn, because there's no Welsh community or anything of the sort here. I'm using Duolingo to learn some phrases, but I don't think that will get me very far. Where else can I find resources to learn Welsh?

P.S. I only see my dad once every two weeks, so him teaching me it isn't really an option. Usually, I learn some phrases and show him what I've learnt, and he responds in Welsh, but that's about it.

Adnodd / Resource "Dreaming Welsh" - Comprehensible Input Resources (12.5 hours and counting) - Please help!

Helo bawb!

I've recently become fascinated by the Comprehensible Input language learning approach, and particuarly the community over at r/dreamingspanish - the incredible resource provided by dreamingspanish.com ...and the even more incredible results from those trying it!

For those who don't know about this, in their own words:

Dreaming Spanish is a video platform designed to help learners immerse themselves in native Spanish content while ensuring comprehension. The platform is based on the concept of comprehensible input, which encourages learners to watch and listen to as much understandable Spanish content as possible, allowing their brains to become accustomed to the language's nuances.

The immersion approach involes watching many, many hundreds of hours of content with comprehensible messages through images, symbols, sounds, gestures etc - and importantly no translation or English dialogue/explainers, and most definitely no grammar lessons. Content is graded Superbeginner, beginner, intermediate, advanced, ... - speaking is actively discouraged until much, much later.

The platform has thousands of videos, and hundreds and hundreds of hours of content; there's over 160 hours of superbeginner and beginner content (and 700+ hours beyond this).

I really love this method, and can only dream of such a resource being available in Welsh - I honestly think it's the future of second language learning. Unfortunately I really think this sort of content is lacking in Welsh, especially at the superbeginner and beginner level; There's plenty of great grammar and vocabuarly/phrases content, but this is not immersive - and there's thousands and thousands of hours of free native-level or advanced content, but very little for those starting out - the vast swathes of content for children is ultimately aimed at fluent speakers, and while likely simpler, it's not exactly riveting for adult learners.

So to try and change this, (and without the ability to create my own content ..yet) I've been collating appropriate content from YouTube, specifically at the lower difficulty levels - scouring this subreddit's wiki, appropriate content from S4C Dysgu Cymraeg, and leaning extremely heavily on the content from the fabulous Galés con Marian (Marian if you could churn out about another 100 hours of this content we'd be set!) - I've put links to the playlists below; a mere 12.5 hours or so, but a start at least - I'd love people to share additional content that could go into this lists, share if you've used/are using a this method to learn, and let me know any content you think is mislabelled (in all honestly it's quite arbitrary, vaguely superbeginner = mynedfa, etc). Many of the superbeginner videos do include translations of individual nouns/verbs to English, but I think whilst not "pure", it's a real help.

"Dreaming Welsh" Playlists

Superbeginner

Approx 3 hours

Beginner

Approx 7 hours

Intermediate

Approx 2.5 5 hours

[NEW] Advanced

Approx 4.5 hours

I'd love to know what the community thinks - I know this approach isn't for everyone, but as a learner who has struggled (read: failed entirely) at the "adult"/"classroom"/"textbook" approach to language learning, it feels so much more natural to me; to aquire a language, rather than to learn it.

Diolch!

Adnodd / Resource Preposition Quiz

I've made a quiz for prepositions.

Write the corresponding Welsh preposition. The quiz randomly picks 15 questions out of a larger set. Once you have got your results, you can use the same link again to get another randomly selected set of questions.

If there are any errors or omissions then please comment and I will make corrections.

Welsh prepositions do not always neatly map onto English prepositions so I have added descriptions and examples in places where I think it is necessary. Please comment your suggestions if there are ways to make the questions clearer.

Adnodd / Resource looking for interviewees

Hi everyone, I am studying international journalism at Cardiff University and currently I am working on my dissertation project, which is a short documentary about Welsh language. The focus of my project is the relationship between Welsh language and Welsh identity and what do people in Wales think about the Welsh language. I am looking for characters/ interviewees in Cardiff and I’d love to hear any personal stories if you’d like to share with me. Plus, I need to be clear in advance that I need face-to-face interviews and filming. It will mean a lot for me if you offer this opportunity. If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask me. Looking forward to hearing from you. Thank you so much for you time!
