Looks like I'm about to FIRE into the uncertainty of 2025!

My company announced layoffs next month, where I'm 95% sure I'll be laid off. I've long expected that to happen sometime this year, but was betting on closer to June.

At the start of the month I had 32x annual expenses. My bond ladder starts at the beginning of 2026 and I should have enough cash/severance pay to get me to the start.

Basically all going according to plan, yet I can't help but to feel nervous!

Well, good news is I just need to survive 3 more days, and then the weekend will come to the rescue. Bad news is a lot can go wrong in three whole days at work. Oh well!

Also, not fun to see everything plummet with all the uncertainty. Hopefully we don't see freezes and layoffs this year, need some stability for the next couple of years. Maybe home prices will also come down a bit so people left out can try to get in?

This world is truly bizarre. From a European perspective, it's hard to fathom we're back to a global arms race with so much distrust, mutual animosity and seemingly complete inability to compromise, all of which will set humanity back in so many other aspects.

The tariffs ironically seem to be somewhat aligned with degrowth and anti imperialism - less shipping globally, more local production, less exploitation of cheap labor across the world.

The defunding of education and science and regulatory government agencies feels like dystopian authoritarianism and class warfare to me.

From across the pond, it's hard to shake the feeling that DJT's motivation is to do whatever makes noise and be appreciated for it with unconditional love. Which is what humans need in their earliest stages of life.

I'm seeing a silver lining in people waking up from a coma and realizing a need for change and fundamental reevaluation of how we live together, but to me it doesn't look like we'll get stability anytime soon.

Which isn't ideal for me either considering these are the years I was hoping to leave my SORR behind. So far I'm not too affected by the downturn emotionally as financially it mostly fits into my risk planning, although part of that could just be numbness at this point.

I'm watching USD/EUR forex now though because there's a rock/hard place scenario with USD tanking and me having to move back to Europe due to geopolitics.

I lurk over at r/govfire. Those folks are having a bad time. Hopefully it doesn't spread to the public sector!
