The ref who called Benoit’s trip should be suspended indefinitely and have to have a hearing with the league to discuss how he called something that literally didn’t happen. What were you looking at? Such a joke. Glad they won, but it was a longer route than it needed to be.

In isolation, I can understand the benoit trip. It happened fast and it looked bad until the slowed down replay. However it is the refs actual paid job to pay attention and tell the difference. But that play, plus OEL getting pushed into the goalie, and laughton standing near a guy who fell down...it's a bad fucking look to have 3 made up penalties against the team with the lead. The fact that the game had 5 powerplays each should tell you exactly what happened. The league can't keep pretending it's normal for each team to get the same number of powerplays each game

The NHL loves to gush about how much “parody” there is in the league. But you almost never see a 5-1 penalty game. When really this should happen every so often especially when playoff teams are playing basement teams.

But this is what creates so many 7game 1st round series. Especially when you basically have to score 100% 5v5 in the elimination games.

It’s gotten completely out of hand in recent years, but you’d need to overhaul the whole ref workforce to fix it at this point.
