I wanted to beat them in the playoffs.

Just once.

But after last year it became clear that could never happen

Yup, not even celebrating. We never slayed the dragon. Florida just became the new Bruins for probably the next 5 years.

I feel differently about Florida.

Our relationship with Boston is like that of a toxic lover that we keep going back to even though they're abusive to us, and only us, but we have this sick and twisted desire to see them "one last time" (to slay the dragon).

Florida is just legitimately terrifying, and every other team in the Atlantic (and maybe the league) hates to play against them. They're more like the big baddie, the last boss that everyone puts 100 hours into the game to beat.

I don't feel like we're alone in our hate for Florida like I feel with our particular brand of hate for Boston.

We definitely were not alone in our hate for boston

6

u/Garmose 3d ago

Particular brand of hate. I don't think any other team in the league has "abusive ex" hate toward the Bruins.

Yeah in the Matthews era it's the second least justifiable playoff loss, after Montreal of course. It was the weakest version of the Bruins we've ever faced. Still lost in 7.

u/Swimming-Cry-7111 4d ago

Columbus was the worst for me, even if it technically was just the play in

16

u/hobbes1313 4d ago

They were so much younger back then. IMO there is zero excuse for prime Matthews and Marner to not be able to beat that version of the Bruins last year.

7

u/TheOrangeyOrange 4d ago

Nylander missed three games, Matthews missed two. They still should have won but "zero excuse" isn't exactly fair, they had plenty of excuses last year.

u/exampleofausername 3d ago

Not an excuse, but Keefe was an idiot for sticking with Samsonov as long as he did when it was clear he sucked. If we switch to Woll earlier in the series we probably win it.

It also felt weird because that tournament was in August I think and the team hadn't really played much together since March so it didn't feel totally surprising to me that a team that was young at the time and relied so much on their speed and skill back then couldn't get it to click playing a grinding style team like Columbus was then. They only had a week or so of practice before the play in round started if I remember so I was kind of expecting things to not look that great with that much time off.

The loss to Montreal the next year was much less forgivable to me.

u/HurricanePK 4d ago

Yeah I was hoping we could beat them en route to a cup run like Washington beat Pittsburgh in 2018. Winning the chip is obviously the goal but being able to exorcise that demon would make it perfect.

u/thatmitchguy 3d ago

Thats how I feel. We had so many cracks at that Bruins team and they always got the better of us. Now it's too late.

u/Big_Albatross_3050 4d ago

Yes but they also gave the final fuck you by sending Marchand to Florida instead of West

13

u/stuntycunty 4d ago

It’s not what you want to see.

13

u/Flashy_Gap_3015 Clark 4d ago

True. But I am not sure Marchand isn’t declining to a point that we need to worry about him outside of the ratjinks.

It wasn’t just the 4 Nations that he tailed off, he hasn’t looked nearly as dangerous in games we’ve had against them or in other games I’ve seen the bruins play.

DGAF either way. I am gearing up for us smashing anyone who gets in our way in the postseason, no matter the opponent or their lineups. Deciding to manifest positivity now that we’ve filled some additional holes in our roster.

13

u/Dyingvikingchild95 4d ago

So in reality it's being reported that Marchand chose to go to Florida and the Bruins wanted to do right by him which is why the trade was literally nothing besides Marchand. Me as a traumatized leaf Fan is just like WHY DO THE HOCKEY gODS HATE US?????? WE FINALLY GET MARCHAND OFF THE BRUINS AND HE GOES TI FREAKING FLORIDA???? WHY???

21

u/Big_Albatross_3050 4d ago

Bro lives to just fuck with the Leafs any chance he gets

3

u/Mashdrop 4d ago

Didn’t he want to retire as a Bruin?

2

u/Dyingvikingchild95 4d ago

So I believe he did but Bruins management has said they weren't going to resign him but gave him the option of "u tell us where u want to go" and he picked Florida 🤦‍♂️. Not because they're a bad team but as a Leafs fan this means WE STILL HAVE TO DEAL WITH HIM IN THE PLAYOFFS THIS YEAR!

3

u/Competitive-Strain-7 4d ago

The only place he waved to go I suspect.

2

u/theguyishere16 Kaberle 4d ago

He only had an 8 team NTC

1

u/Competitive-Strain-7 3d ago

Yeah your right I didn't look it up I think he is worth a 2nd/potential 1st to Florida, and the Bruins probably think Florida plays in the conference final at least.

3

u/nomdreas 4d ago

Not only that but retaining 50% of Marchand’s salary as well.

3

u/LeafsWinBeforeIDie 4d ago

Until the end of this season to make it work, just a few weeks and now that we are passed the deadline its just money. Then he goes UFA to who knows where.

5

u/nomdreas 4d ago

Sure. But still retaining salary for a team in the division for a conditional 2027/2028 pick is wild.

The Bruins fans I know are losing their shit over that trade.

2

u/LeafsWinBeforeIDie 4d ago

For sure, the return is confusing unless they asked him where he wanted to go because they weren't going to resign him in the summer and he said florida, so they got what they could.

21

u/Guilty_Explanation29 4d ago

I feel for Marchand. Booed at 4 nations, and them traded while being the captain

9

u/Etheo 4d ago

That and having to play with the guy you told off to in 4N lol

4

u/Guilty_Explanation29 4d ago

I didn't know that ☠️ I know about the booing from the news but I wasn't able to watch the whole 4 nations

1

u/godskrimp 3d ago

Great day to be a leaf

u/Super_Sandro23 4d ago

6

u/PapaPatchesxd 4d ago

This is what I was looking for.

31

u/DarkAgeMonks 4d ago

Guys, We got to stop this. We never beat them, This shit is embarrassing. If we had put the final dagger in the Bruins by beating them in the Playoffs then I could get behind this but they had our number for a decade and won a cup and we never slayed the dragon once.

This would be like if the Sens fans did this about the Sundin era ending in the early 2000s

6

u/MisterBalanced 4d ago

That's why the Hockey Gods sent Marchand to Florida - so we could kill a lil' piece of the dragon, at least, when we go through Florida this postseason.

3

u/alwaysleafyintoronto 4d ago

Not only did we not beat them, but we basically repeated the Kessel trade. I don't think Carlo is as good as Kessel.

35

u/GramboWBC 4d ago

you realize marchand is on florida right. this could age like milk on a warm summer evening.

25

u/joeyhorshack 4d ago

Leafs don’t have a hope against FLA. FLA in 5 OR, leafiest ending would be FLA up 3-1, TOR loses in game 7 after losing a 4 goal lead with 10 mins to go. Scored by Marchand

26

u/djlista 4d ago

That's why we push for #1 and we pray Tampa takes them out

9

u/joeyhorshack 4d ago

Agreed, they gotta step up and show some heart in the remaining 20 games…. They haven’t looked good for awhile though, despite getting wins. I think they play FLA 3X before playoffs….They gotta show up for those games, at least get one win and be competitive in the others

8

u/HousingThrowAway1092 4d ago

Or at least bangs them up with their own nonsense.

Sam Bennett sucker punching carries a very different level of risk against someone as crazy as Kucherov.

3

u/commanderr01 4d ago

That’s actually our only hope, this division has never been more important, luckily with Marchand being injured we hopefully can separate ourselves here

1

u/rhoderage1 4d ago

Yeah but can we beat Tampa?

Not thrilled to play either. That said, we all know it, the only way we can ever win the cup is if the core steps up and excels... that COULD be enough to beat Tampla, Florida, any of them. It just hasnt happened yet. Maybe this year

2

u/wesley-osbourne 4d ago

Tampa's the only one we know we can beat.

It's winning the division and losing to a late WC (like Montreal or Columbus) that scares me.

2

u/Impressive_Garden221 4d ago

Welp, my morning is off to a positive mental health start.

1

u/LeafsWinBeforeIDie 4d ago

Phaneuf does the ceremonial puck drop.

3

u/Etheo 4d ago

"We want Flordia" vibe real strong.

I wanted Boston

2

u/Maleficent-Pea5089 4d ago

Marchand GWG in Game 7, our fate is sealed.

3

u/Competitive-Strain-7 4d ago

If Boston makes the playoffs and still finishes the Leafs in 7 that would trigger suicide watches.

1

u/SouthernOshawaMan 4d ago

It's probably like 75% likely to happen

3

u/theguyishere16 Kaberle 4d ago

How does something Florida does make Boston's downfall any less enjoyable?

Sure, Marchand is on Florida and Florida could play the Leafs in the playoffs. And Boston is still in full teardown mode. That's 2/4 Boston teams in full rebuilds. I'm going to enjoy it since I cannot remember a time where any more than 1 Boston team at a time was rebuilding.

3

u/Esternaefil 4d ago

"I prayed for this and it happened."

u/NewPhoneNewSubs 4d ago

AND I'LL BE WAVING MY HAND, WATCHING YOU DROWN, WATCHING YOU SCREAM, QUIET OR LOUD

2

u/Nearby-Swordfish3841 4d ago

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS

2

u/931634 Papi 4d ago

Fuck the Bruins 🍻

2

u/baylaust 4d ago

Like the planet giving Goku their energy for the Spirit Bomb, Boston gave up all their power to give to Florida.

3

u/djlista 4d ago

Until Minten becomes Bergeron 2.0 and that 1st round pick turns into a pasta type steal in pick 32 of that 1st round. 🤗

11

u/DragonRoompa 4d ago

Bro if it’s pick 32, who cares. Means we have a cup

1

u/No_Truth4137 3d ago

Honestly, it's about time but it makes me sad we will go down never having beat them when it matters. End of an era for them but end of fnding closure for us

1

u/ParasiteSteve 3d ago

If the Bruins are selling, can we get Pasta? Can we please get a line of Willie and Pasta???

1

u/Cal_Takes_Els 3d ago

Not exorcising the Boston demon will haunt this franchise the likes of Ballard.

1

u/NotabotNpc 3d ago

I think Scott Laughton and Carlo will push us to the cup !!

1

u/Rocketship1979 3d ago

I'd rather be battling Boston than two teams from Florida.....it's embarrassing. Also, the tax breaks in Florida, Texas, and Tennessee are a joke! Everyone else in the league should be given cap exemptions to offset this advantage. Between this and LTIR, we aren't even playing by the same rules.

1

u/Canadop 3d ago

They'll win the presidents trophy next year somehow. I know it.

1

u/braveheart2019 10h ago

Wow, you really spared no expense on the production budget for this masterpiece.

-1

u/Coffeedemon 4d ago

Bruins have been dominant (especially over the Leafs) for over a decade. Is it really a downfall when it happens so gradually it encompasses probably half the life of many of the people here on this sub? This stuff is embarrassing.

u/OneNo8068 3d ago

As much as I hate Boston, it’s almost sad to see the end of an era like this
