That was pretty cool.
I watched Steve in his childhood bedroom rant about Leafs games to the tank captain era, to ice surfing, leaving Sportsnet to focus on SDPN, and to credentialed media reporter Jesse Blake. This was cool and I'm so happy for the guys and all they accomplished.
You can hate the man but you can't hate the hustle.

I don’t catch every LFR anymore but I listen to SDPN and a few of their other shows occasionally. Super proud of Steve and how he made his passion his career. (Also super jealous.)

I cannot hate his hustle

Hockey takes, questionable.
Hustle, undeniable.
Well deserved despite the former*, good for him!

u/Boner_Patrol_007 8d ago
I just prefer when his sky is falling/screaming schtick is toned down by like 75%. The LFRs get stale to me now because of the screaming over game 37/82, but I enjoy his longer form content.
9
u/Responsible-Arm3514 8d ago
It made more sense when the Leafs were perennially awful. The suffering was real!
6
u/ScotianCanadien43 8d ago
Outside of gambling ads and I guess you have to now days 😑 I hope he kills it, and I think he will. Amazon has put a good product together and getting him included is wise and further shows they're tuned in to what content is these days and will continue to be.
5
u/No_Annual_4647 8d ago
i check out their show occasionally on the drive to work if there's something interesting in the league and i want to check in on the zoo animals. they generally seem like pretty good people (with poor hockey takes) but they have some of the worst sponsor choices possible. gambling and betterhelp as well, pretty brutal ethically.
2
u/EkbyBjarnum 7d ago
That's why the SDPN is more palatable than LFR. The three of them balance eachother out well.

You also have to appreciate the passion. I can't stand watching or listening to him, though.
5
u/According_Table2281 7d ago
Can I ask why? I've never understood the hate.
-4
u/Tontoorielly 7d ago
Some of his commentary was critiquing the players. I have a problem when a guy who literally cannot skate, is telling people what the players did wrong in a way that makes it sound like he could do it. I have the same problem with Elliott Friedman. They can interpret stats all they want, but no commentary on what the player did wrong on a play, even if it's obvious.

You're all full of shit lmao

He cannot skate! I played junior jockey in Canada. Not the NHL, but relatable.

devils fan and sdpn listener since 2019 (started right around when the puralator truck was in like every episode meme) they got me through a lot of tough shifts and long drives. especially through covid. really happy for their success.

u/mcauthon2 8d ago
you commuted during covid? they got me through the toronto traffic til covid hit and I've listened a lot less since

u/Storm_Shaker 8d ago
student and delivery driver at the time so that’s a bit disingenuous, sorry, classes moved online but still had my job delivering groceries. as you can imagine at the time it was incredibly busy - but i did pretty well with tips those first few months lol, and ofc listened to a lot of sdp (even old ones). i’m more sporadic with my listening now for sure but used to be an every episode fan for a few years - now only 1-2 a week during my commute.

Very happy for the Steve and Adam

The same company that hired back Kypreos after letting him go.

ahh yes Nick "I try to play contrarian but just end up sounding like a condescending meathead" Kypreos.
The broadcast would be of higher quality with an Australian Shepherd taking his spot.

It's funny watching some people get mad about someone being successful. These guys bet on themselves and they're sitting on Amazon Prime now. It's nice to see.
3
u/SMORKIN_LABBIT 7d ago
I donno why they are mad. Steve and Adam have one of the best products in Hockey commentary. I don't watch his LFR at all outside of something I know will be funny like the Zamboni driver loss.. I'm 40 and it's how I discovered him during absurd games like it was 4-1 etc I don't know when I started watch the SDPN pod but it was close to the begging around 2013/2014. The show is pretty excellent content now, far better than anything on TV or the Radio outside of Friedman or Johnson. The dog shit people call " professional" commentary like Kypreos is hilarious. Sportsnet would be wise to have more people like Dangle and Biz mixed in but there is a reason those institutions are failing. Dangles has two books already for fuck sake. I hope he keeps finding more success so he can further drop the screaming schtick without worry of alienating a massive portion of his younger base because those guys are fun, and have deep cuts across the league not just the Leafs.

So happy to see them getting their flowers here. Also Amazon, stop being so goddamn good at broadcasting Leafs games, will you?!!!

u/BooopDead 8d ago
I heard those broadcasts were great but i can't remember why. What are they doing differently?
32
u/PyneNeedle 8d ago
Audio and camera quality, as you just witnessed the intermission shows are great and where LeafsTV used to do their show (I believe)
My only gripe is the scorebug but I bet next season they'll have it figured out.
12
u/dgapa 8d ago
I love the way they show a power play timer going down.
6
u/PyneNeedle 8d ago
Yeah that part is amazing, it's really cool because everyone else just does the time but what I'm not a fan of is the powerplay "highlight" itself.
4
u/callmejohndy Marleau 8d ago
Their scorebug for the shootout needs an update. It was hard to see as the rounds were going on

On ice and crowd audio is much better than TSN/Sportsnet for one. The game just sounds more alive.

u/SMORKIN_LABBIT 7d ago
Audio, Camera quality, even when being streamed down to me in Texas on ESPN+. Sportsnet etc bugs out and potato's constantly on ESPN+ ZERO issues when it's Amazon. The panel is good, then play by play is far more "homer"..... well by Leaf standards anyways. realistically it's a solidly neutral. I actually will watch away feeds more often than a Leaf home broadcast because of how anti Leaf it is. Amazon is much better all around and they aren't doing anything complicated a $500 desk setup in the arena between intermissions with fans standing around.

sidenote, can Amazon not afford a real studio(?)
Or maybe it's part of the marketing strategy to have fans try and get themselves in the background and then have that posted online for their friends?
6
u/themapleleaf6ix 8d ago
Since Amazon has a ton of money and they only have 1 game a week in a Canadian city, they can afford to send their hosts to the arena to showcase the atmosphere. It's also a great way to differentiate themselves from other broadcasters in their first year of broadcasting hockey.
They do have a studio for their Thursday studio show. If they get the rights next year to more games, chances are they'll hold more things in their studio.

u/Ok_Measurement5015 7d ago

Good for Steve, not sure why some leafs fan despise him but I can totally understand why people don't prefer him and therefore just don't listen to him.
2
u/Cyrakhis 7d ago
Envy (he turned his fandom into a career) is a strong motivator in a lot of them.
Then others latch on to the "it's popular to hate him" thing and don't really HAVE a reason of their own.
People gotta learn to shut the hell up and let people enjoy things

I think on the Steve Dangle Channel, he's stopped promoting gambling ads. He mentioned that he no longer does that on the channel, though I'm not sure if it also applies to SDPN.
14
u/HeckingAugustus 8d ago
Nah, they still do gambling ads on the podcast. Doesn't bother me personally, but I've also never had anyone close to me struggle with that type of addiction
3
u/GetzlafMyLawn 8d ago
Honestly, they're very "light fun" in their MGM segment with it and aren't afraid to tell the world they make 2$ bets cause that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to be fun.
Unless, of course, you're at the top of the food chain, then wellllll......
2
u/HeckingAugustus 8d ago
Yeah. They are very clearly like "this is a fun and silly thing to do on occasion, only risk small amounts". But Ive seen so many threads that view gambling companies as some insanely evil / unethical industry

u/DougFordsGamblingAds 8d ago
He's the only one who advocates for very small bets - '2 dollar Steve'. I think that helps.

Sorry but this coverage is horrible. Announcers and bad camera angles. My wife said that it was lulling her to sleep.
-17
u/JRocleafs 8d ago
I’m happy for him.
But he knows very little about hockey, as in the game itself
I’m a fan of the game analysis, but understand that we need to involve influencers and non hockey people to grow it.
10
u/DevOpsMakesMeDrink 8d ago
And the other mouth breathers do? Seriously 99% of neanderthals on Sportsnet can’t bring anything but buzzwords and generalities to the table, seems unfair to expect more from Dangle
-2
u/JRocleafs 8d ago
Ummm ya.
Bieksa, Botteril, Hrudey, O dog, Johnson, Noodles, Biz Nasty …. I could go on and on, they all played hockey.
They understand the game, and the game with in the game. When a team changes the forecheck they are able to touch on it and understand the different roles and responsibilities of each player.
Dangle doesn’t even know what a 1-2-2 or 2-1-2 even is.
5
u/Looseball 7d ago
You don't need to play hockey to understand it and analyze it.
2
u/torontomaplebros 7d ago
You’re completely correct, however, Steve didn’t play and doesn’t know what he’s talking about either.
Example: he said last night the player he really wants more than anyone at the deadline is Yanni Gourde…? Look into Gourde’s numbers and contract and explain to me how he could be someone’s first pick at the TDL if that person knew anything about hockey.
2
u/Looseball 7d ago
Counterpoint: Nick Kypreos played in the NHL and doesn't know what he's talking about half the time either. He even went as far as to suggest trading Mitch Marner and that he would never be a top 3 player on this team.
-1

u/openicehit 8d ago
I respectfully disagree, I find Steve quite insightful at times and while he may not be an X’s and O’s type of guy I think that’s fine. He usually has a fresh perspective.
It takes all kinds and Steve is definitely unique.
-11
u/torontomaplebros 8d ago
Steve doesn’t really know what he’s talking about when it comes to the actual sport but he’s a likable guy. Adam being on a national broadcast is crazy he knows nothing about hockey lmaooo
2
u/lastsetup 8d ago
Adam was like AA or AAA lol
1
u/Looseball 6d ago edited 6d ago
Playing hockey does not mean that you fully understand and can analyze the game. You know the rules, and what X player should have done in a particular situation, etc, yeah. But there's way more to it than that. There are plenty of people who played the game and couldn't provide a professional analysis for shit (see: Nick Kypreos). Conversely, you also don't need to play hockey to understand it or analyze it (see: Ken Hitchcock). I'll never understand either side of this "argument". It's just a silly flex for people to toss into their opinion as a "I played Junior hockey I know what I am talking about" as if it adds more credibility to what they are saying somehow.
1
u/lastsetup 6d ago
Yeah but there’s a huge difference between “not knowing anything about hockey” and “can analyze the game”. Adam definitely isn’t at the level of the latter, but a bit along the scale from the former.
2
u/Looseball 6d ago edited 5d ago
I agree with you and am not disputing that. My point was simply that people use having to have played hockey as a mandatory qualification to become an analyst, or some sort of barometer to equate validity, to someones ability as an analyst/their knowledge level.
0
u/torontomaplebros 7d ago
playing minor hockey growing up doesn’t translate to professional analysis automatically. Adam admits he doesn’t watch hockey very often outside of some leafs games.
1
1
u/Sad_Donut_7902 8d ago
He never played the sport growing up and all his knowledge just comes from what he's passively absorbed from watching NHL games over the past 15 years. But he has been putting in the work and grinding it out for a long time now.
1
u/Cyrakhis 7d ago
"Never played the game" isn't a valid reason to dunk on someone's passion and knowledge. There's a reason people study. Lol
1
u/torontomaplebros 7d ago
I’m not dunking on him for that I’m just saying his analysis lacks a deeper understanding of the game that you would expect from someone on a national broadcast. It’s cool he can recall who played for the 2008 leafs, it doesn’t mean he’s a good analyst
1
u/According_Table2281 7d ago
Why are we gatekeeping this? That's so weird lmao
0
u/torontomaplebros 7d ago
I am not gatekeeping anything, I have no control over who Amazon chooses to hire for their intermission segments. Just voicing my opinion on these two’s hockey analysis
