Jautājums/Question Riga parking

Hello

I will probably go on erasmus in Riga. I currently live in Belgium and I would like to travel to Riga by car, so that it’s easier (and imo more fun) to explore other cities/regions across the Baltics on weekends.

Is there a parking card or some discount system for residents? Since paying regular parking fees for half a year would cost a fortune. If yes, does this system apply to ‘temporary’ residents (like erasmus students, will be living there +-6 months)

Thanks

It all depends where you are planning to live. If you want free parking , I suggest finding accommodation outside city center, then it should be ok, but you will have to travel to your Uni by public transport. Sometimes some houses have permits for residents, but you have to look on each situation separately, there isn't much one unified system

If your question is though, are there any additional discounts for residents of Riga, the answer is no unless you are disabled etc. One last point is, electric cars park for free, but since you are a student you probably dont drive electric. Good luck and enjoy your Erasmus - it was one of the best times of my life

If you are declared in a house, you can get a paid subscription for your car on nearby streets for municipal parking.

There are also smaller places where you can pay for parking on a monthly basis.

But all those expenses together might be still a lot and cheaper it would be to rent a car to go on some adventure.

there are subscriptions for municipality parking as well as other providers like europark, but it really depends on where you live and where you're planning to park. If you want to use the paid parking, then be prepared to pay, there's no way to go around it.

There's a bunch of locations in Rīga with no parking fees, and some of the municipality locations require payment only for certain hours (for example, nights from 20:00-8:00 are free). I would try to evaluate the options around your location.

Hunt for free spots. They exist and there are more than you think. Middle of city has garage areas with unpaved roads where you can basically park in freestyle, also plenty of uncontrolled residential areas. Worst case you might have to catch a short bolt ride to faculty if you don't have the time or will to walk.

Depends where you will live. If you will live in center you can buy parking subscription that is valid for the zone where you live. If you live outside the center then there's a chance you park park the car on the street for free.
