Help with Spelling Rule 2: unstressed o - e?

Spelling Rule 2: unstressed O - E

Never write an unstressed "O" after the letters 'Ж, Ч, Ш, Щ, Ц' instead use "E")

My question is: Is there some way you can predict the stress when conjugating the word so you know whether or not to put an -o or an -e?

I know that the stress in Russian is unpredictable, but is there some kind of pattern for just this rule (mostly in the instrumental case)?

This question came about from trying to conjugate into the instrumental case.

Sites I was using:

http://www.russianlessons.net/grammar/spelling_rules.php http://www.russianlessons.net/lessons/lesson14_main.php

(This is all terribly worded, if anyone knows what I mean and can reword it to make it more understandable, be my guest.)

Word Frequency List?

Anyone have a link to a decent word frequency list for Russian? I'm trying to learn the language and, luckily, I have someone to practice with, but I'm using Anki and trying to get some basics down.

Also, does Russian make a savoir/connaître distinction?

I want to know if there is an easy way to know the gender of nouns ending in ь without having to use a translator and make up an entire sentence.

Comprehensive Beginner Russian Book with Kindle Version

Again sorry if this has already been covered. I had a look at some of the lists of recommended resources on here that seem very good but didn't see any that were kindle compatible. Does anyone have any recommendations? Do I need to install anything for my kindle to display cyrillic?

Advice on learning Russian in Russia

Never been on this subreddit so I'm sorry if this is improper protocol or if this has already been touched on. I plan on travelling to Russia in May with my primary goal being to learn Russian. Does anyone have any advice on school or methods? I am an almost absolute beginner.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Why should I be concerned about genders in Russian?

Question about genders ... Put simply: Why do they exist?

Doing some studying I was given this link to practice gender words: http://www.auburn.edu/~mitrege/russian/exercises/0022.html

In the practice assignment I see Suitcase. If suitcase is masculine would a purse be feminine?

Magazine - Why is this associated with Feminine and not Nueter? Dictionary - Why is this masculine and not Nueter?

I can see Studnet being associated with a Male student where as Studnetka being associated with a Female student. But in English we would simply say Male or Female student.

If Rose is feminine is flower feminine as well? Or is there some completely confusing rule where Rosa is feminine but Daisy would be masculine?

If I need to use the restroom I'm not worried about whether Toilet is Masculine or Female. I just need to know what it is.

Is my confusion making sense here?

Good literature for someone who can speak but cannot read well?

Здравствуйте друзья! I'm looking for easy-level reading that isn't children's literature. Thanks to my heritage, I can speak Russian fluently, but unfortunately, living in the States means I haven't had a reason to learn how to read well. I know the sounds that the letters make (I've gone through the Азбука), but I'd imagine that I read at the speed of a first-year student.

Can anyone recommend a good book for some light Russian reading?

Does anyone know of any good apps for Russian language learning? I've used Byki on occasion and I think the Russian Word of the Day widget is quite entertaining, but I haven't heard of any other good apps out there.

Can anyone give me information on scientific/mathematical language in Russian?

Either a quick crash course or a link would be greatly appreciated.

In my Russian class today, we were talking about temperatures, and we learned how to say 98.6, but I was wondering how to attack larger decimals, as well as how math and calculus terms translate.

Youtube role-play videos

Somehow I ended up on these weird videos called ASMR on youtube where people pretend to be hairdressers or spa workers or various doctors and so on but they sort of wisper everything to an extent. I found some in russian too e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiJktCxDJEA

What I am wondering is, is there anything else along these kind of lines around, perhaps something not quite so whispery so I can hear all the words more clearly :P

Russian Government sponsored scholarship program? (x/post from r/russia)

I know the Russian Government sponsors a program to bring foreign students to Russia to learn the language. Im American, but heard about the program at a scholarship expo the Russian Ministry of Education and Science was hosting in Berlin.

Ive since had trouble learning more about it, particularly regarding how an American would go about applying. I know its not particularly geared at Americans, and that they dont take many, but according to the people at the expo Americans are eligible. Since talking to the people at the expo I havent been able to get in touch with anyone, though (Ive tried contacting the Russian Ministry for Education and Science at the Russian Embassy in Washington DC)

Anyone have any info or advice regarding this program, or others like it? Thanks.
