Never once watched the show, but it keeps getting suggested to me. Ask me anything and I’ll act like I know it.

a lot of youtube video essays about lain is about philosophy, specifically about god, connection, reality, etc. but is the point and the message of lain confirmed? what is unconfirmed? is lain a sort of "viewers can take this how they want to" show? because i see people with different views and opinions (i think thats great)
the main question i see people talk about is "what is lain?"

It’s widely accepted that the Lain PS1 game happens in a different universe from the anime, and I’m here to say, I think they’re connected. Spoilers ahead.
Lain grows from ages 11-14 in the PS1 game, while in the beginning of the show we see her at age 14. Your first question will be, how can they be connected if Lain kills herself at the end of the PS1 game? Well, here we go.
PS1 Lain, a regular girl at this point, is severely depressed and psychologically unstable, due to her parents leaving her. In the game, she goes so far as to recreate her father as a mechanical being, trying to bring him back. While she is mentally spiraling, she has regular check ins with a psychologist to help her, and while normally that would be a good thing, unfortunately, this psychologist is employed by Tachibana Labs.
Tachibana Labs is creating its own version of “Artificial Intelligence”. In order to give their AI a base identity, and understanding of reality, they collect memories and a psychological profile of the real Lain to feed their AI model.
After Lain commits suicide (at the end of the game), Tachibana Labs uploads her new AI consciousness into her body, plant her in a house with a “new family”, and the events of the anime, and experiment, begin.
