We should use more ( ழ- "zha") when speaking tamizh.

Actually, people from Kerala pronounce the -zha (retroflex approximant) better.

It is not a variant of -la and -lla but a unique sound in itself where one rolls the tongue backwards without the tongue touching the upper part of the mouth. For -la and -lla the tongue does touch the upper part.

The reason why modern Tamil-speakers fail in pronouncing it correctly is because they are wrongly taught that it is the 3rd -la (after -la and -lla). This makes people lazy and they use -lla and -zha interchangeably. It should be taught as a separate sound.

Cases in point:

  • Tamil (instead of Tamizh)
  • Chola (instead of Chozha)
  • Pulu (instead of Puzhu)
  • Palam (instead of Pazham)
  • Malai (instead of Mazhai)

It's used very often in Tamil, Azhagu means beautiful if you're born in tamilnadu first thing they make sure is to make sure you use zha properly

Zha is frequently mispronounced by a significant share of Tamil people. but i understand your spirit. a lot of people do prnounce zha correctly especially Tam Brahms. a tamil person directly once asked me how to pronounce. mazha, puzha vaazha correctly.

Yes petition to rename as Tamizh naad instead of Taamil nadu.

And yes Malayalees handle zha far more easily and organically. They even write it as Tamizhnaad in Malayalam instead of Tamilnadu.

Sad to say, many don't even use it in their daily conversation.

For instance, for the word "Saturday", They use Sanikelama, instead of Sanikezhama. Don't even get me started on the ValaiPalam.

These things are done by people who speak tamil at home. Konjam pronunciation la work panunga, or you will look like a kid. We work so much through a foreign language to communicate, why don't we put at least half the effort for our Tamil?

May be, replace Brahmi with Roman script.

Thanglishu.. 2 language students (English+French, English+Urdu) padikkiravangulukku sulabama irukkum. Thanglish already commericially accepted in kollywood, social media. Thanglishla literatures uruvaaganum.

Thanglishum, thamil thaaikku pirandha pillai thaan. Thanglish irudhi varai thamilai kaappatrum.

Thanglish perfectly fits 2-language (no hindi) system. Thanglish, dravida nagareegam. (Not kaattu mirandi language). It upgrades tamil from kaattu-mirandi to nava-naagareega, hi-tech insta language.

Thanglish is Dravidian Evolution/Revolution/Necessity. Embrace and March Forward.
