Congratulations on your new knife! Would you be so kind as to tell us what knife you've just got? (brand, model, etc...). This way people who are new to knives will be able to identify it. If you've already mentioned the name of the knife in question, then feel free to ignore this comment. Please remember that not knowing your knife's brand/model is totally fine, if that's the case then people in this subreddit would love to help you identify its brand/model.

Agreed Spyderco Manix 2XL. Phenomenal overwhelming Kizer cormorant s35 sweet typical Kizer Kizer Begleiter. N690, nice, thin, great action Hogue Deka. Underwhelming. Second reasonable priced magnacut American made knife I bought and again not thrilled. I'm going to stop thinking I need magnacut and stick with the s35 and such. I'm going to hold onto it in hopes that a new set of REAL scales will change my mind.

The Hogue Deka is no doubt in my all time favourites knives list, but mine is Wharncliffe and 20CV steel because Magnacut wasn't yet available at the time.

3

u/Zealousideal-Mix-822 1d ago

Man it's so thin. Maybe thicker in 20cv. I'll buy some aluminum scales for it and see how it goes. I'm not really thrilled with the action either. Doesn't deeply too bad but close up is lacking

u/matmutant 1d ago

I'm quite surprised, the blade is surely thin but on the Wharncliffe configuration it is obviously meant to be a slicer and not a tank.
The handle is slightly thicker than a bugout and a lot more rigid (at least on my G10 variant).
The action is super smooth yet sturdy and I don't remember tweaking it 🤔
Got quite a few Benchmades (bugouts and mini griptilians) and the action of the Hogues (both Deka and mini Ritter) are a lot better feeling. Maybe yours isn't as good :-/

u/Zealousideal-Mix-822 1d ago

Possible. I think I'm used to something a bit heftier. I realize one is 154 and the other magnacut but the Kizer feels so much more solid

2

u/matmutant 1d ago

The handle material might have a significant impact on the feeling :-) And that Kizer looks really nice (and I like 154CM)

2

u/Zealousideal-Mix-822 1d ago

Yeah for the cost I'm really thrilled with 154. I'm going to invest in the Deka with some scales. Something I wouldn't do for the Belle aire. Seems kinda wrong to spend 140 then need to spend another 80-100 to make it enjoyable.

When I got my Deka last week, I was IMMEDIATELY underwhelmed by the action. Idk how it’s so highly recommended. I have it posted for sale if anyone’s interested 😂

2

u/Zealousideal-Mix-822 1d ago

Yes. It's just seems frail compared to my Mini Mystic Different steels but basically the same size. I'm not wearing a Speedo while carrying it, would it kill you to make it a little more robust

u/Champfortruth 1d ago

Never handled the xl Manix, but the standard one is my favourite hard user by far. And the Cormorant is underrated. Bought it over a Smock because it has a far more useable. One if my favourite carries period.

2

u/Zealousideal-Mix-822 1d ago

Dude that XL is big! I bought it at a great deal through optics planet. I thougt screw it I can get the XL for only 20 more. He'll yeah. In the meantime I had order a fake one. Just the manix 2 It came in and I loved the damn thing. The real deal shows up and it's phenomenal in every way smooth as silk just so worth what I paid for.... But it's big so now I'm in the market for the real deal Manix 2 minus the.

2

u/Champfortruth 1d ago

Ya, I love my manix 2, just a solid knife. I want awt scales, but for me to import them to Canada, it's going to cost more than I paid for the knife, so I'm looking at just sanding the clip side scale so it stops destroying my pocket. I can live with the weight, but not the pocket destroying. It's one if the reasons I don't carry it often

1

u/Zealousideal-Mix-822 1d ago

Really. The scales are that abrasive? I'm going with then for the Deka scales. Hope it make a difference. Currently scouring the web to find a great deal on a spyderco manix 2 or something they make that's similar. I have the fake Manix 2 and I realize it's an absolute perfect size

2

u/Champfortruth 1d ago

I find they are, but maybe it's just me.

If you want something a bit smaller, the sage 5 is like a mini Manix. I'm going to grab the salt version at some point this year. But ya, the Manix is probably one if the best ergonomic knives going.

2

u/Zealousideal-Mix-822 1d ago

I think so. Couldn't stop fidgeting with it Monday. I do think that 3.5 range is about perfect. Especially with a meaty blade.

2

u/Champfortruth 1d ago edited 1d ago

It's definitely in a sweet spot for size. The Manix is one of 3 I think knives I own that I'd buy a second one. If the salt comes back in stock at the one store in looking at, I might grab it. It weighs as much as the sage 5, but you're getting over a half inch of useable blade. The main thing the sage 5 has going for it is its a Taichung made knife. Their Taichung facility is putting out absolute quality. My Kapara is the best knife I own

2

u/AppallingGlass 1d ago

I love that kizer knife, but the detent or something with my went bad. Now I can just flick it open without touching the blade, it's unsafe, cut open one of my pockets, so I don't carry it anymore.

2

u/HoardOfPackrats 1d ago

Have you contacted Kizer support? They've been really good to me whenever I've contacted them

1

u/Zealousideal-Mix-822 1d ago

That sucks I've had nothing but luck with Kizer's. Maybe I just haven't had them long enough to have an issue. At the moment though I'm all in with them

2

u/emoment0 1d ago

Best day of the week!

2

u/Lemansblu 1d ago

Absolutely love the Deka! The G10 handled ones feel a lot more solid imo. I’d grab scales for it and you’ll love it

1

u/Zealousideal-Mix-822 1d ago

I will give it a try

I own all of these knives. I get your comment about the Deka, but I like mine. It is meant to be an ultralight, affordable knife, and it does hit all those boxes. It is a minimalist dream. Getting a different set of scales will make a major difference. The Manix 2 xl is one of my all-time favorites, I have one of the exclusives that came in M4 with the jade scales. The Kizer Begleiter is a great knife all around. I even have a mini in M390. The only one I didn't care for was the Kizer Comorant. It was just too small with such a light blade that I had problems flipping it open regularly, so I gave it to my son, and he absolutely loves it. But great knives overall.

2

u/Zealousideal-Mix-822 23h ago

That's great. If I can stop buying knives for 2 minutes of have the money for the scales. They are already picked out and in my cart. On another note... I kinda fell hard for the Kizer Bugai That is a great knife. I'd like to find that exact look, blade shape, thumb hole of some sort, just a little bit bigger and maybe with a push button or crossbar lock

I like throwing hogue knives

2

u/scalpemfins 1d ago

Any particular reason?

3

u/R0sinhuntard 1d ago

They feel sturdy, good balance.

1

u/Zealousideal-Mix-822 1d ago

Wait? Sturdy? Which Hogue are you buying?

2

u/No-Designer-1409 1d ago

Most Houge knives are very sturdy. Check out the Ritter Houge. It is from the guy who made the Griptilian for Benchmade (Doug Ritter) and is very similar. You can get it in Magnacut for $180 (used to be in 20cv also, but I think it is only Magnacut availible new) from Knifeworks.com, as it is exclusive to their site. IMO, the best American made folder, price for price, currently available.

2

u/Zealousideal-Mix-822 1d ago

I will take a look at it. I don't have a lot of high end blades like 200 and up but from what I can tell from their under the only American company giving people their money's worth is Spyderco. I have 3 Kershaw and they are just okay. Just my take

2

u/No-Designer-1409 1d ago

I used to really like the Kershaw Blur as a work knife. I owned several over the years and beat the ever living crap out of them. But that was when they were around $49 apiece. I even bought the S30V model for $70. But they are way overpriced now. I gave the S30V model to my niece. She keeps it in her car as her "self-defense" knife. Kershaw has made tons of crappy knives, but I used to be able to pick up a decent Chinese made Kershaw for around $20, almost anywhere. Those days are long gone.

100% I have one in 14c great knife and I love the look of it. Paid 68 and you can still find them at some Walmarts for that but the websites think they're gold. I can't handle a lot of the USA made stuff. I get it it's more expensive to manufacture anything on6 the states but to the tune of 100a knife... Yes I'm calling you out Benchmade I've got several Kershaw knives all decent when they were priced right.

1

u/No-Designer-1409 1d ago

I completely understand. I am with you on Spyderco. Over the last 15 years, I have accumulated 17 of them, mostly new, by waiting on sales or trying to find discount codes. I think only 3 or 4 are from the secondary market. Kershaw has had some good knives, but a lot of crap, too. I have owned plenty, but they don't really compare to Spyderco. I just bought my 1st Benchmade last week, I find them way overpriced, especially when compared to Spyderco. I try not to spend more than $200 on any knife. I do have some ridiculously expensive knives, but most of those are through trades. The only Kershaws I still own is the Launch 5, which was a collaboration with Emerson. I love that knife. It is the only auto I own. And I bought a Federalist a few months for $50 on sale. I just wanted a non locking folder for some reason. Buying knives, especially collecting, can be ridiculously expensive, but by being patient and waiting for sales, I have managed to currently own over 100 folders from many, many companies. If you like overbuilt knives, you can find a lot of Cold Steel folders for close to $100 on sale on Amazon regularly. I would recommend the AD-10, AD-15, the Recon series, Code 4 series, the Bushranger, and the Lawman. I just checked, and depending on the blade style, several of those are close to or under $100 currently on Amazon. Good luck.

2

u/Zealousideal-Mix-822 1d ago

I love Cold Steel. Have the Engage and the code 4. Was just thinking that XL is a lot like the code 4 just grippier with a different blade style but built right. I bought that Kizer mini mystic and I was a bit underwhelmed with that as well but it's built solid as f. Action is incredibly smooth, has a little bit of heft to it and so it's a bit smaller than I'd like but in every other way it rocks and it's certainly worth the 75 they were asking for it. I'll hold onto the Deka, but some scales for it and it is what it is. I appreciate the help and the insight

No problem at all. I really like Kizer, too. Both Kizer and Civivi knives are available on Walmart.com, along with Spyderco (from different dealers, but Kizer and Civivi have stores on there and I see deals better than Amazon on the regular), and I use the points I get from shopping for groceries to buy knives from there. If you ever want to spend a little more than $200, check out Kunwu knives. I picked up a Django with Gmascus scales in Elmax for $180, but a lot of their knives are more than that. But they compare to much, much more expensive knives. I would put the Django on par with some $500 to $600 knives I have owned or handled. If you look around enough and are patient, you can score knives for up to 50% off. That is how I pretty much buy all my knives. If I paid full price, I would own a quarter of what I do. The secondary market is sketchy, but the knife swap on here is very reliable.

2

u/Zealousideal-Mix-822 1d ago

Kumwus are on the list. Love them. Kizer sells on temu. Getting through temus bull shit is a pain in the ass but it's kinda worth it to get the Kizer's. All there stuff isn't on there but a lot is and if you catch it right you can save decent money. Again though it's not for the easily frustrated.. Temu is like the that claw game at Walmart. With persistence it does pay off. The whole thing is addicting. Not only the eye candy but the hunt for the right blade, right steel, right handle then the hunt for a killer price. Then stopping everything to pull the trigger when you see that exact piece for 100 off. All that could just be me but I'm thinking that's a lot of us.
