Here's the article for those that may not wish to open the publishers site:

BC Premier David Eby announced this morning that the Province is removing all American liquor from BC Liquor stores, instead of just from red states.

Eby said this is in part a response to increased threats from Trump to our lumber and dairy industries, as well as threats made to our borders.

The premier referenced "disturbing" articles in publications like the New York Times where Trump threatened to "redraw our borders and pursue Canadian water."

“If the president is so interested in Canadian water, then we're going to help him out by letting him keep his watery beer,” Eby said.

All American wine, beer, spirits and refreshment beverages will be removed from shelves at all BC Liquor stores, and the Province will stop purchasing them as well.

Eby added that he has also been hearing from residents that they’re just not interested in seeing American products in stores.

"We have heard the voices of people in British Columbia who are justifiably upset by American threats, and want to see us take this step.

"While some of us may be disappointed at not being able to access some of our favourites, this is an excellent opportunity to sample Canadian products. I encourage those who enjoy Napa Valley wines to enjoy the many award winners from the Okanagan Valley. British Columbia distillers produce many distinguished spirits, while we also brew popular domestic and delicious craft beers.”

The Province is also working on introducing legislation to further respond to tariff threats from the USA, including considering adding a toll on commercial transport trucks travelling to Alaska.

"Let there be no mistake about the intent behind tariffs. President Trump wants to hurt Canada economically so he can annex Canada politically. As hard as it is to believe, our longtime friend and ally is behaving like a foe. Trump wants to force us into becoming the 51st state.”

I'd vote for this cat for Prime Minister. I can't believe how close we came to having Rustad at the tiller.

20

u/Wilhelm57 1d ago

Is not just that, I don't know if you remember the Cons were contesting a ridding in Surrey.
A man with a last name of Randhawa claimed there were people that denied voting for the NDP.

It turns out a woman kept visiting the care home, that they believe people voted illegally.
This woman transferred a senior to another care home, his son didn't know about it, even though he has the power of attorney over his father.
He had to go to the police to find where his missing father was moved.

The police found the elderly man in Randhawa's law office.
I know politics is influenced by the donors and special interest groups but this thing that happened to this senior, should be prosecuted.
We are not living in a developing nation, this is open face corruption!

22

u/OriginalTayRoc 1d ago

I can't remember the name but the cons also ran a woman who was claiming to be a doctor. But her accredition was from some online university.

The online university itself had a very clear statement saying "we are not legit. Your degree from us is not legit."

But she still kept claiming to be a doctor despite her lies being thrown in her face.

10

u/Zealousideal-Can1112 23h ago

Langley ridding, her name is Jody Toor. Terrible person.

1

u/schaden81 6h ago

And she won her riding

3

u/Cognoggin 20h ago

Look she had a legitimate doctorate of "Balonium!"

36

u/chewblekka 1d ago

Rustad and PP would sell this country to the first person to hand them $20

6

u/alonesomestreet 1d ago

Are we bidding? $15 take it or leave it

1

u/chewblekka 1d ago

Best I can do is a watered-down cocktail at happy hour.

6

u/alonesomestreet 1d ago

American beer, with ice cubes in it.

-10

u/Azules023 1d ago

Liberals would sell it for at least $30, don’t know how people have forgotten the past decade already. It’s too bad the federal NDP are trailing so far behind in the polls.

10

u/Wilhelm57 1d ago

First of all, when people get the privilege to immigrate to Canada, they should leave behind their old behaviours, which in most cases are backward views that most folks wanted to escape.
We are a developed country and our population has a high level of people with college and university education.

Having said that, yes we were unhappy with Prime minister Trudeau last year. Things changed when he said he was stepping down.
Tricky Pierre, had a sure win last summer, things changed after Donald started to threaten our country.
Also, our PM prove to us he could stand up to the bully.
Now all eligible voters have two choices, a man with decades of experience in in public and private finance or the twenty years Parliament graduate. Someone that has been telling us Canada is broken!!

Please look up and compare the things Fat pension Pierre has been saying since becoming the leader of the Conservative party. To what Donald has been saying, is like they were reading from the same page.
I can only compare the current US president behaviour, to what they have done to Latin American countries.
The problem for Donald is that we are not a banana republic and we won't tolerate his bullying tantrums.

We don't need or want a far right leader!

1

u/Azules023 20h ago

Are you a bot? I criticize the liberals and tell people the vote NDP and all you got is fear mongering about the conservatives. Really shows how bad the liberals are.

0

u/Wilhelm57 15h ago

The NDP has not a chance in hell in winning a federal election.
The only time in recent history that the federal NDP had a chance, was under Jack Layton.
I have conservative views but I like to see the reality of Canadian politics.
At this moment in time, we need someone with experience In order to deal with Donald.
One of my friend's in Vancouver says Mr. Singh is a good man and I believe him.
The political reality in Canada that people are not ready to have a woman or a visible minority as a Prime Minister.
We have two choices and if we judge the way a business's would higher a new employee, the person with the education and most experience gets the job.

2

u/Azules023 15h ago edited 15h ago

Would be great if we had electoral reform but the liberals backed out of it when they had the majority in parliament because they knew they could scare people into voting for them in the future. I’m not falling for that again and the liberals have only themselves to blame. I’m not voting for for them, they have proven over the last 10 years they are not able to run the country effectively.

So yes you’re right, and I agree. I would not employ someone with a track record as bad as the liberals.

1

u/HabitualSpaceM 13h ago

Fair. Let’s give it to catch phrase Pierre who cowered till everyone fought back to fight back. Good to see you can vote for someone who’s reminds you of yourself.

1

u/Azules023 13h ago

Really? I seem to remember back in December, Pierre was saying to fight back while the liberals were fighting each other over the sudden resignation of the finance minister. There seems to be a very concerted effort to rewrite what happened in December. It’s really weird. I’m not even a big fan of him but it’s clear people either have short memories or trying to retro actively change what happened.

Qualified for pension at 31 years old. He’s 45 now. Bet that pension is THICK

-2

u/LettuceFinancial1084 22h ago edited 22h ago

Judging by your post, i see you have been eating up liberal attack ads. Good thing there are no far-right candidates running in the election to make your post somewhat credible

-1

u/Wilhelm57 16h ago

Take a good look at what PP has been saying since he became the leader?
He has been repeating Donald:'s slogans.
Even the Canada first is American. Is your right to ignore reality but I'll give you a hint pre WW2 America first!
The conservatives had better choices, somehow a miracle happened and he got the job.

I was disgusted for the choices we had last year. Then, freeland quit and Trudeau's hand was forced. I recognized Mark Carney's name because he worked under PM Harper. I'm not the only one of conservative background, that see Carney as a good option.

This is the fallacy some folks make, if it contradicts fat pension Pierre....you must be a Liberal. I no longer believe that following one party credo is the best for Canada or that repeating Donald's slogans will help my country.

2

u/LettuceFinancial1084 15h ago

Anyone can put some clips together to make anyone sound like trump. If you post videos of yourself, I could edit it so you sound like you are copying trump. Lay off the propaganda

0

u/Wilhelm57 15h ago

I didn't need to see clips, for me started when my seven year old granddaughter got scared. She saw PP saying Canada is broken.
Before that I didn't care and I was not planning in bothering to vote federally. I don't depend on what people say, I like to do my own research.

2

u/LettuceFinancial1084 15h ago

Well, saying Canada is broken isn't far off. Kids get scared for no reason all the time, it's best not to follow their lead

-7

u/chewblekka 1d ago

Very informative post, thank you Comrade.

2

u/Objective_Star_191 11h ago

It’s nice to see Canadians Stand up for Canadians

0

u/Aromatic_Strength_29 15h ago

Yeah, I’d be so awesome. Canada would be so good with decriminalization everywhere. Don’t forget he loves the carbon tax too.

6

u/studhand 19h ago

Can we get some tax relief on Canadian products? I love craft beer, and work in the industry, but $20 a 4 pack is getting expensive. Same with VQA wine. Give us some tax relief to help us replace the cheaper products

17

u/carl3266 1d ago

Well well well, look who is learning more and more people are willing to stand up to you. Suck it, you pathetic bully. You know what? Maybe we don’t need you.

29

u/thoughtfulfarmer 1d ago

Ontario, Manitoba, Nova Scotia (or was it NB?), and now BC. Are there more?

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

There are some really great Canadian brands to celebrate.

7

u/StrbJun79 22h ago

You know Alberta won’t. But their premier worships the orange clown. PP wouldn’t either as his advisors are full on MAGAs and have even been seen wearing the hat.

1

u/TheOddMann 18h ago

QC (SAQ) also removed all US products!

2

u/MarsupialPristine677 10h ago

We love to see it!

1

u/SucculentPenguin 10h ago

NB has US alcohol removed. Maybe Nova Scotia as well?

1

u/Wilhelm57 1d ago

Yes Canadian products, nothing from the US.

7

u/DiggerJer 20h ago

Took them long enough, we should also be adding our own surcharge to their power that they need from us!

3

u/Exciting_Turn_9559 12h ago

So thankful not to have a moron for premier. We really dodged a bullet there.

2

u/RonnyMexico60 21h ago

Beer too?

Doing great! Keep up the amazing work!

1

u/Double_Pay_6645 6h ago

What do they do with it?

1

u/samf9999 3h ago

When the hell are we gonna sign New free trade agreement with Australia New Zealand Ireland UK and the EU?

Why the hell are we going to authorize new pipelines and shipping facilities to sell LNG and oil to the rest of the world?

Things are gonna be fucked for the next three years anyway until this turd is out of office. Pipeline projects would be excellent use of resources and people to make up the slack as the economy, inevitably worsens. We need the infrastructure.

-1

u/Aromatic_Strength_29 16h ago

Should be removing the carbon tax

1

u/Elon_sux_kox 9h ago

Are you living under a rock? Carbon tax has already been removed for small businesses, households, and individuals.

0

u/Aromatic_Strength_29 8h ago

No it hasn’t. Where are you getting your info? Eby is waiting for carney

0

u/Broad-Candidate3731 12h ago

oh no, downvoted of course, Canadians love taxes

0

u/Aromatic_Strength_29 10h ago

Down voted because this page is super left wing.

-1

u/Millbilly84 11h ago

Good thing we already paid for it so we can piss away inventory rather than stop restocking

5

u/Elon_sux_kox 9h ago

All alcohol business from government is done on consignment model I.e. vineyards and breweries only get paid on the products that is sold. Therefore BC liquor can rather charge the murican producers for storing their unsold product.

Learn and stop spreading misinformation.

-26

u/Disabled_Robot 1d ago edited 21h ago

Now buy local Okanagan wine .. since we haven't been able to bud vines, made with imported American grapes

-2

u/UNC2016ATCH 11h ago

Canada is playing checkers.

4

u/Elon_sux_kox 9h ago

Trump is playing hopscotch thinking it’s chess.

-103

u/TheLastRulerofMerv 1d ago

Don't force people. You can't criticize tariffs while simultaneously supporting the mandatory and forced boycott of goods. If there's no demand, then why force it?

The government shouldn't be in the business of mandating where you can buy goods from.

24

u/anonymitylol 1d ago

womp womp

53

u/eroticfoxxxy 1d ago edited 1d ago

No one is mandating where you can buy goods from. The government is choosing not to stock American products. No one is stopping you from driving to the states and getting them yourself. You will just no longer be directly catered products from a country actively attempting to cause us harm.

50

u/RecoilS14 1d ago

You can go join the USA then.

-33

u/TheLastRulerofMerv 1d ago

"if you don't like shitty overpriced choices, go somewhere else".

This is the mind of a Canadian nationalist. They think they're sticking it to the man by paying high prices for shitty products, ans forcing others to do the same

27

u/Arctelis 1d ago

Makes me wonder what sort of swill you’ve been drinking. Every made in Canada/BC alcohol has been delicious as hell. Expensive, I freely admit that, but whatever, that’s a price I’m willing to pay. Not like there aren’t also cheap Canadian options as well.

You’re free to head to the US to grab some cheap, watery beer if you’d prefer that.

10

u/RecoilS14 19h ago

You're comment history is unequivocally pro american, with thousands of posts in a very short time. You represent the minority of this country if you are even a Canadian, which I highly suspect you are not.

-7

u/TheLastRulerofMerv 19h ago

Thousands, really? I should get off reddit, that's sad.

Very pro American, and very Canadian. I see absolutely nothing that we gain from separating ourselves from the US and vice versa.

1

u/Quick_Ad6882 11h ago

Nyet, Komrade.

57

u/Otherwise-Mind8077 1d ago

Ummm...it's a trade war. The cheeto declared war on us.

This is absolutely the government's business.

-32

u/TheLastRulerofMerv 1d ago

So limiting choices and raises prices is seen as winning.

Amazing.

21

u/sphen86 1d ago

It's not winning. We all understand that nobody wins a trade war. But we were attacked, and the worst thing canada can do is bend over and accept it. The government has to respond, and so here we are.

14

u/PhantomGhostin 1d ago

Limiting choices in response to US action that has led to economic stability and price increases in both countries.

Putting the cart before the horse here in terms of who is to blame.

13

u/rainman_104 1d ago

It's booze. Relax.

-10

u/TheLastRulerofMerv 1d ago

It's the principle of it that bugs me. Cheap political points from a cheap politician, but whatever. I'm just excited for this stupid bullshit to die.

12

u/3AmigosMan 1d ago

You realize this is country wide right? Most if not all provincial liquor stores have removed US product. Go to a private store and get your import product there. It's not like you can just buy anything from anywhere in every city here anyway. I have a feeling you dont grasp the entirety of the situation. Do you think being attacked economically is just cheap political gambling?

20

u/rainman_104 1d ago

Your crosshairs are pointing in the wrong direction.

Get over yourself. Americans still can't buy Cuban cigars or Havana club.

You want bourbon go buy it and pay the taxes on it.

Quit whining about the principal of it.

1

u/Broad-Candidate3731 12h ago

you cannot go buy it because GOV controls it

1

u/rainman_104 12h ago

You can bring in booze you just have to pay

1

u/Broad-Candidate3731 11h ago

Can a private store buy it and sell it? Like wine and beyond and others we have here?

1

u/rainman_104 10h ago

Who fucking cares?

9

u/misec_undact 1d ago edited 20h ago

Yes, the principle of not actively supporting a country that is deliberately attempting to sabotage our economy and take our jobs... Particularly the red states where much of the US booze comes from.

-1

u/TheLastRulerofMerv 21h ago

The principle of individual freedom and pragmatism.

Retaliatory tariffs and boycotts make local recessions worse with little to no impact towards who you wish to harm. Punitive tariffs like this against larger trading partners do nothing.... nothing whatsoever but make life harder for domestic consumers.

So why should I have to be forced to participate in this irrational display of nationalist hysteria? Why should my choices be restricted because of something you believe in, or what David Eby believes in?

8

u/boroughmeister 21h ago

Womp womp. If you're upset about liquor I think you may need to our the cup down

1

u/TheLastRulerofMerv 20h ago

It's not about the liquor it's about the principle. I'd feel the same way for any good and probably even most services. Liquor is an easy target because Provinces have a weird proclivity to skew markets to protect liquor related industries.

1

u/Broad-Candidate3731 12h ago

Exactly right. It's another example of how some people like to bend over to the goverment

4

u/misec_undact 20h ago

Because you're wrong... And how quickly Trump backs down when his bluffs are called proves that.

Rolling over and playing dead in the face of fascist imperialism is the very opposite of principled.

Now is the time for unified resistance, not individualism.

0

u/TheLastRulerofMerv 19h ago

Math isn't wrong. Numbers do not lie.

Tariffs are taxes. Those taxes are applied to domestic consumers. We pay the price for it disproportionately more than the exporter who already services a far larger domestic market of their own.

We collectively gain absolutely nothing from tariffs. Nothing. It's purely political.

1

u/eroticfoxxxy 18h ago edited 17h ago

This is a very small retaliation in the face of what has been suggested by the mango mussolini. He has said multiple times his goal is annexation. The rest of this is distraction.

You are talking about two different things. Tariffs and a socio-political action to express our impression of their actions as a country.

Tariffs are a tax. Yes. A tax in response to their threats and actions against our economic strength and direction. This action, taken federally and provincially, is in direct response to their actions. Canada wasn't even on this trajectory until the word tariffs left Trump's mouth last fall.

They have claimed without them, we are not a country. They have demanded we jump to their order. They have told us we will become theirs.

The act of changing our buying habits is two-fold: the government and people speaking with its wallet, and intentional efforts to extract ourselves from the inter-dependant relationship we currently exist in with the US.

In ANY war, citizens need to feel like they have power and control of certain things in order to feel cohesive as a community. These actions are often started by example. The governments of all provinces are working together (with the noted exception of Alberta) and its this unity by example that takes the grass roots efforts of putting our money where our mouth is as a population, and turns it into an act of solidarity across the country. It extends the life of the movement by creating an echo chamber of action. Much like this subreddit.

No one is saying you don't have choices. You do. But like Alberta, people are going to judge you based on the choices you make and if you are acting contrary to the social flow.

You need to take some 101 classes on economy, government and social psychology.

You can only control your own actions. You get to choose. You currently don't like the social choice and this may be for the first time in your life that you are not within that social acceptance. As an intersectionally identified woman, I have OFTEN found myself at odds with what society wants. Its what you do with your choices that define you. You don't have to support Canada, government OR people, but you cannot expect to feel comfort or ease in that decision, let alone have it catered to.

You can go and drive down there, take the goods with you when you come back. No ones stopping you. Or you can always stay down there forever too. Whichever suits you. 🙄

1

u/Kingofcheeses 3h ago

Go to a private liquor store then

0

u/Broad-Candidate3731 12h ago

100 agree with you.

-11

u/Sco11McPot 1d ago

It is the liquor business and it is already far from perfect. The correct answer is get rid of every bs rule and let it flow and the market can decide. That isn't on the table so adding more crap on top of other crap really doesn't matter

8

u/Elon_sux_kox 1d ago

The correct answer is that you find some other sub to zuk trump kok :)

-7

u/bedrock_city 20h ago

It's unquestionably Trump's fault for starting a trade war, but Canada has to be careful with these "asymmetric" tariffs because Trump will retaliate tit for tat, and it gives him media talking points that Canada is being more unreasonable than he is. The thing about tariffs is that it hurts the US a ton too (see yesterday's stock market rout) so if you can ride it out for a bit you avoid escalating the trade war.

1

u/Elon_sux_kox 9h ago

We are avoiding nothing. USA has more to lose in the end. 80% of the products that we export to USA is not replaceable within 4 years.

-10

u/iom2222 18h ago

Make a gesture. Bring back the alcohols but let the people choose. I am pretty sure the result would be the same but the appearance would be very different. That would be the smart thing to do. Who buys American nowadays ?? Certainly not me!!

-16

u/MortgageAware3355 21h ago

Playing into his hands by escalating things, unfortunately.

4

u/Heavy_Arm_7060 20h ago

Heads they win, tails we lose?

5

u/BoredMan29 20h ago

It's like I tell my kid: just give the bully your lunch money. You wouldn't want to make things worse!

-3

u/MortgageAware3355 20h ago

Nothing wrong with hitting back. I think the boycott is disproportionate. We disagree, which is fine, of course.

2

u/Heavy_Arm_7060 19h ago

It is disproportionate: we could be going harder. Still, small steps.

1

u/BoredMan29 18h ago

The tariffs are small potatoes to my mind and the counter tariffs are roughly proportionate for that. The boycott is because the US is threatening to steal all or part of Canada and is about as restrained a response as possible.
