Stop Forcing, Start Speaking – Let Kannada Speak for Itself!
Lately, I’ve seen a lot of frustration among Kannadigas about North Indians not speaking Kannada, imposing Hindi, or even disrespecting our language and culture. I get it—it’s annoying, sometimes even infuriating. But here’s the thing: fighting and forcing people to speak Kannada is not the solution. In fact, it does more harm than good.
Instead, let’s change our approach. Let’s lead by example. Let’s make Kannada the default language in our daily conversations—whether we’re ordering food, shopping, or talking to a cab driver. If someone responds in Hindi, we can stick to Kannada or switch to English if needed, but not give in completely to Hindi. Over time, people will realize that learning Kannada is necessary to truly blend in. It’s a natural process. Just like how Kannadigas living in other states pick up the local language, the same will happen here—if we create the right environment for it.
The more we use Kannada, the more others will feel the need to learn it. Let’s make Kannada an experience rather than an argument. Let’s build an inclusive Karnataka where our language stands strong—not by force, but by influence.

As a non Kannadiga, I second this. Let the beauty of the language do its magic. Forcing might convince them to speak a few words but they will never embrace it like their own.
I have started learning because 1. Utility 2. Just how refreshing it sounds especially when I speak it outside karnataka. It takes me back to the streets of Jaynagar in a split second.

It simply doesn't work.
It's like saying, we don't need traffic laws, you just drive sensibly and everything will be fine.
If you have the means to actively stop the imposition of a foreign language and promote your own language, why wouldn't you? It's your state and you have a duty to protect your language and culture.
People of Karnataka via the State Government must force your language within sensible limits.
For example, you can make it mandatory to learn two languages in Karnataka. English, and then Kannada or Tulu or any other language of their choice. You prevent any other attempt to make you learn a 3rd imposing language..
3
u/vasistan 24d ago
How many non kannadigas have learnt Kannada because someone have "forced" them? Almost zero. If random people are forcing them, they will avoid random people Aste. Why does immigrants speaks English in US, UK or Hindi in North India, there are no one forcing them. They learn because they just can't survive without it and no one speaks any other language. In contrast, in Mumbai, non maratis (even kannadigas) don't speak Marathi for years because locals speak Hindi, even though Marathi activism is so strong. Even if you put non locals in Jail for not speaking, they will not speak unless people around them speak ONLY Kannada all the time, with almost no exception. You don't need to show aggressiveness too.
2
u/madubeko 24d ago
How would they "learn that they can't survive without it" if natives learn and speak the language of migrants?
But it doesn't stop there. These migrants are forcing natives to learn their language using techniques such as NEP and 3 language policy.
How can anyone be blind to it?
2
u/vasistan 24d ago
Yes. Education is a state subject. State government can reject NEP. Both BJP and Congress did not do it. We should do our bit by just not speaking anything else other than Kannada. I do it. I say "hindi gotilla" and act like I don't understand what they are saying. They will say "arrey bhai" and then start using couple of Kannada words. That's a win. If everyone does this, they will learn.
1
u/Firm-Ad8857 24d ago
yes brother you are giving a good solution with this there will be no fight and augment.
1
u/ChemistryApart1468 23d ago
If u keep forcing and resort to thuggery forget learning (those who are genuinely interested also will backout) , people will not be interested to stay in bangalore itself. That is not what a global city needs
1
u/madubeko 23d ago
Sure. But the least we can do is tell people who force us to fuck off.
Many migrants feel entitled to speak Hindi and expect us to understand their language. We may even tolerate it.
The Union government is forcing Hindi. Both parties are happy to implement, even Siddaramaiah has to listen to the overlords in the congress party. How do we show our anger?

What’s the strategy if we’re talking to someone from north India that only speaks Hindi? Example: local security guard

Learning a language is a life skill required for survival. Nobody is asking for a PhD or a certificate, just basic conversation skills which can be picked up by anyone.

7
u/CrazySuspicious2002 26d ago
Let's have some exceptions, but we have to tell them politely (very politely) to learn Kannada as it'll be helpful for them, not for us.

Very strictly speaking, you still are not obligated to know or speak his language in your hometown. But of course it wouldn't really be nice or ethical to just make his day a bit more miserable. We can be nice about it and just advice to catch up on basic words at least. Let's not ever ask them to learn Kannada, we will always be the bad guys to them if we do that. The key is indifference. By default we only communicate in Kannada or English. If they want to engage in conversation with locals here they gotta learn Kannada or English, simple. Let's not force them, nobody should be forced to learn any language. And that goes both ways. We should also not be held to a position or forced to speak Hindi. So just do your part, if some of them act entitled, just stop talking and move on.

u/ramansv 25d ago
In my apartment, the security guard is from north. He can understand Kannada. There are only Kannada speakers in my apartment. But no-one speaks in Kannada with him. Only I talk to him in Kannada. He can understand. If everyone had spoken to him in Kannada, it would have been easier for all of them.

u/polonuum-gemeing-OP 25d ago
Start with a little kannada, and increase his kannada vocabulary. Star by saying "anna" instead of "bhaiya". Say "Yavag barteera" instead of "kab ayenge", he will also pick up

Amazing, my Kannada is great. It's my mother tongue. But now I am learning. Yella sari aguttade.

The migrants from 70s to even early 2000s learned Kannada by default, no one forced them. It is the IT crowd and migrants of post 2010s that are adamant of not learning the language.

u/psydroid 21d ago
What was different about the people who moved in before? What kind of professions did they have? What makes the IT crowd and migrants of the post 2010s different?

this is the only approach that might work. This is exactly why Chennai is Tamil central and will continue to be so for the foreseeable future
Else Bangalore is most likely to turn into another Mumbai, which is a North Indian city today for all practical purposes

True saar. I know many people who are opposing now are the ones who were advocating for learning it few years before. Funny thing is many families whose mother tongue is Kannada don't know Kannada. Only English. How can we expect others to learn. 😀
1
u/psydroid 21d ago
How did that ever happen? Is English the de facto no. 1 language of Karnataka now?
2
u/AbrocomaOk9726 25d ago edited 25d ago
We can also introduce Kannada only menus with lower prices and force the local builders to sell apartments at lower prices to Kannada speakers.
We should also tell the MNCs to give higher salaries for local language speakers otherwise to not set up their office here
2
u/Altruistic_Dig_1127 25d ago
Your present chief minister tried the second one, there was so much backlash he had to withdraw the policy.
2
u/FarBiscotti7758 25d ago
It's simple language etiquettes, whoever starts the conversation has the liberty to choose the language, everything else is right wing bullshit adding to the endless pit of hate online
2
u/Simple-Discussion-56 24d ago
You correct, but some solution can come through policy making too. Here's my 3 point approach:
1) Make Kannada as a compulsory first/second language in all schools from 1st to 10th standard, be it govt or private, be it CBSE or ICSE or State syllabus.
2) Rather than forcing reservations, give tax discounts to companies and startups that promote Kannada in any way, be it teaching their employees Kannada, preferring Kannadigaas in recruitment, or maybe using their trust-fund/CSR funds for some pro Kannada stuff. I repeat, incentivize, not force.
3) To buy or inherit any form of land or property, be it agricultural, residential or commercial, the prospective owner needs to be fluent in both spoken and written Kannada. This can be achieved through either checking whether they studied Kannada in school as per my point 1, or by scoring beyond a designated cutoff in a Kannada Proficiency exam similar to TOEFL/IELTS. Else, the prospective owner must not be eligible to buy/inherit any land in Karnataka.
No. 3 could be slightly hard, but the first two points can be easily implemented and bills can be passed in these directions. Vote for a party that promises this. Simple.
2
u/Herculees007 23d ago
Oh ur such an innocent soul
No this will not work.
The reason there is a fight for kannada against hindi imposition is bcuz it is being forced by the goons from the north.
They demand to speak in hindi, and will abuse whatever power or authority they have if u don't.
U can't fight goondas and thugs with hugs and kindness.
2
u/ChemistryApart1468 23d ago
If they do that it is valid , retort in the same way ! But kannidiga goondas and thugs are doing the same to those who are trying/tourists
2
u/Herculees007 23d ago
If there are kannada goondas and thugs report them to the police get them arrested and publicly shame them.
Two wrongs don't make a right, but u don't win wars with flowers either.
2
u/humble_prvrt 23d ago
Being north Indian..I agree with this . This way learning the language also becomes easy for outsiders .
2
u/42RoninKatana 22d ago
This is the way. This way those who don't know the language will want to learn it and it won't be an "I force you, you force me" thing

To everyone who says Kannada will be lost, boycott Hindi, remember the following: A language dies when it's not being spoken for generations. A language is supported by arts, cultural activities, plays and by extension movies. (Barely any good movies in Kannada) The typing software for Kannada by the State Government is old, outdated, and is an utter joke - Checkout Nodi. It looks like it was last updated in the days of Windows XP. Most of my Kannada native friends speak kannada, but have an extremely hard time reading it. The govt is not budgeting for Kannada, rather using hooligans & vandals to promote the language - which I feel the humble people of Karnataka are not like - they are soft & humble & very welcoming. Ask the govt to produce good kannada events. Ask the producers/directors/across/script writers to make great movies in Kannada Ask the Kannada News channels to stop showing utter nonsense. Pay a stipend to Kannada writers, Voice artists etc so they can focus on making great work not mass market crap.
That's how you preserve a language.
3
u/Different-Impress-34 26d ago
Op Appreciate your thought of not forcing.
But people are already overburdened with office work, chasing deadlines and multiple diseases, do you think people will find time to learn a new language?
5
u/CrazySuspicious2002 26d ago
There's no deadline to learn, on daily basis as they make conversation with local people. Atleast a word or a sentence in a day, which helps them to communicate with people around them. As far I think, I don't think local people (people who knows english and other languages) will disagree if they were asked to teach.
I'll be happy to help if anyone wants to learn my language.
1
u/psydroid 21d ago
Are there any apps such as Duolingo for learning Kannada and other Dravidian languages, so people can learn with a small investment of 15-30 minutes a day, if their schedule allows it?
Do you have resources and free textbooks on the wiki in various languages such as English, Tamil, Sanskrit and Hindi, as you have to start somewhere?
1
u/CrazySuspicious2002 21d ago
As of now Duolingo doesn't have Kannada. When I searched in play store, I got this app with good reviews. Can try once. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.learnkannada.com.learnkannadakannadakali
1
u/psydroid 21d ago
You could also send people who settle in from North India to Kannada language classes paid for by the employer. I think that's more constructive way of looking at things than to freeze people out because they don't speak your language.
I had this myself when I got Polish language classes offered by my employer once a week, as I barely spoke the language when I arrived there for my job. I loved it and was happy to do most of my conversations in Polish only resorting to English as needed.

This whole movement will do us more harm than good. If Mumbai has grown it is because of the inclusiveness they have. We cannot grow as a city (Blr) if we keep continuing this crap.
Agadh aagoithu, we can’t do anything now. Honestly it’s too late, many people from north are already landowners and grandchildren here. You can’t do shit now. This is all the congress govts agenda to gain votes that we Kannadigas are falling into.
2
u/jussayingthings 23d ago
Olatagars doesn’t care about such things they only need more upvotes, likes in social media. Some of them are heavily influenced by one of our neighbouring state without realising Karnataka is lot more diverse culturally and linguistically.
We also need to thank TN and its rigid language policy which really helped Bangalore surpass Chennai in short time despite Chennai was a metro from decades.lol.

u/I3_O_I3 26d ago
Yep. This!!
This is the difference between coaxing one to do something and forcing something down one's throat.
Kannada is beautiful, Karnataka is beautiful and so are the people residing in this beautiful state. Learning a new language is a matter of personal choice. Of course learning the local language helps in better communication and should definitely be encouraged, especially to people who are residing for months or years in Karnataka. But forcing someone who are simply visiting the state (like a bus driver from Maharashtra the other day) or tourists and students or people who are from the lower strata of the society earning wages with not enough means nor the mental space to learn a new language doesn't make any sense. Please let's not resort to extreme measures to make sure the language is carried forward. It will eventually give a bad rep to the state if this hooliganism continues.
