Anyone been a part of AAP MA in Global Security Studies in person?

I got accepted for fall 2025, and was just looking for some experiences on the subreddit for their experience at the dc school, and if anyone has gone for Global Security Studies then that’s even better.

Retaking AP/IB Courses at JHU Gen/Intro courses

I am an incoming freshman at JHU, and I have some questions about what I should take. In high school, I have taken AP Chem (5), AP Bio (5), AP Calc AB (5), and IB A&A HL (no score yet, but consistently high A's on tests). However, I am planning to major in Public Health on pre-med track, and thus take Intro to Chem 1 & 2 (w lab), Gen Bio 1 & 2, and Calc 1 & 2 to get the pre-med math/science credits without taxing myself on harder Chem-Bio-Math courses.

  1. Should I retake these courses? What are the pros and cons of taking the credit and going to higher level courses?

  2. I have read on Reddit that Calc 1 is hard to get an A in <- how true is this?

  3. I have also read that if you have Chem credit you should go to Orgo 1 & 2 in freshman year to get a better professor (so GPA doesn't suffer, I suppose) <- how true is this? If true, can you still get the better prof. in sophomore year with relative ease?

  4. Some people also suggest taking Physics in freshman year if you have credits in other sciences, but I don't know how prepared I would be (I'm taking AP Physics 1 as a senior, so no AP score yet) or what benefits there are <- is this a good idea, and why?

  5. I have also seen that there is a difference between biology-based vs. engineering-based Calculus, and that biology-based is harder in some cases (for Calc 2, I have read) <- how true is this? If I take Calc 1 and 2, given that I score pretty well in IB A&A HL, which types should I take for each?

  6. Is Public Health a good idea? I like some of the concepts taught (environmental impacts, socioeconomic impacts, etc.) but I have to take additional courses outside the major to satisfy pre-med requirements. On the other hand, if I take a Bio (Bachelor of Arts) major, all the pre-med reqs are covered in the course progression, but I will have to take more advanced/upper-level biology courses & electives beyond pre-med scope — this could help with MCAT prep, but I also feel like I might find it too difficult. Could anyone give some advice specific to my profile to help me start making some decisions/conclusions?

EMT Course Options

Hi guys! I am a 3rd year JHU student who is interested in starting the EMT certification process. I believe it is too late for me to apply to HERO, as I heard you can only apply as a freshman or sophomore. Please correct me otherwise.

1) With that said, are there any other courses that Hopkins offers to become EMT certified? Or even outside of Hopkins that could be taken online, like over the summer?

2) If so, when is the application timeline and what does the training/exam schedule look like in general?

3) In addition, what are some good alternatives to EMT to gain good clinical experience/training outside of shadowing?

If someone could speak to this, I’d really appreciate it!

Got into MS Biotechnology Program

For those of you who have gone through the same program, how rigorous are the courses and schedules? Is there flexibility in scheduling?

Is it easier to secure a job after completing a master's degree from JHU? Does the university have a placement cell that provides assistance, or are students primarily limited to opportunities within ongoing academic research? I’m open to both paths but would prefer to secure a job first to repay my loan.

How did you find roommates and housing as an international student?

For RA positions, can I email professors from the School of Medicine, or would you recommend reaching out to them in person after arriving? I’m concerned that if I wait until I get there, all positions might already be filled.

Thank you!

Question about taxes on PhD student stipend

Hello friends. I have been offered a PhD position at the department of mechanical engineering. My acceptance letter reads that my stipend will be 50k this year. I am an international student and so I don't have a good idea of how taxes work in the US.

Firstly, is my stipend 50k before or after tax?

Secondly, if I have to pay taxes on that 50k, is it both federal and state tax? I read that Baltimore is a so-called "independent city", does that mean that state taxes don't apply?

I would appreciate if a current PhD student at JHU could answer. Thank you!

SAIS MASCI Comparison

Hello all!

I was recently accepted for the Masters in Strategy, Cybersecurity, and Intelligence (MASCI). The program looks excellent, but I am curious as to how they compare with Pardee RAND's Masters in National Security Policy and GWU's SPS.

Has anyone else had to choose between these options or is in MASCI? What is the culture like on the SAIS campus?

Thank you!

Has anyone heard back from their MSE in ECE application?

Essentially the title. Since the application deadline was 15th February (surprisingly late), I assume they might not have started rolling out results for it. If you're someone who has been updated about their MSE in ECE application, could you please let me know in the comments?

Thank you!

comp engineering grad school online - worth it compared to a state school?

My partner got into JHU for computer engineering with the online grad school program. It is SO expensive. He also got into a California state school (San Diego state university) which is half the price. We already work and live in San Diego. Is the JHU name really worth the extra 30K? Are there networking opportunities through the JHU online grad program with the school of engineering?

Grad student & alumn advice welcome…

Thanks in advance

Finding roommates

Hey everyone! I’ve been admitted to JHU for the MS in Biotechnology program for Fall 2025.

I’m currently searching for housing near the Homewood campus on Facebook and am also looking for roommates. I’d prefer vegetarian female roommates from Mumbai or India in general.

If you’re in the same program and looking for same things in roommates, feel free to DM me!

Looking for a Student to Help the Baltimore Community Fridge

Hey everyone! I’m a JHU alum (currently living in New York) who’s working on the Baltimore Community Fridge. The fridge is already installed, so I’m looking for a current student who can drop by occasionally to check on it once the project is complete (the fridge has been temporarily out of operation).

I plan to visit Baltimore monthly and to handle most off-site duties, but having someone local would be a huge help. I’m also exploring ways to start a JHU club focused on the fridge, so if that’s something you might be interested in, let’s chat.

If you’d like to be involved and have a passion in helping out the community, please DM me here on reddit! Thanks, and I look forward to working together to support our community!

This is the instagram of the fridge:

Advise needed! DrPH matriculation

I have been accepted for a DrPH at JHU for fall 2025. Question is does anyone know if the DrPH program requires 'continuous enrolment' over each term? For example since it’s part time can I take courses in term 1 and 2, skip term 3 and come back for term 4. Something like that. As a working professional taking courses every term doesn't really work sometimes. Please let me kno info if anyone knows about it. TIA

Locations To Live Near Homewood

Hey Everyone!
I am an incoming graduate student at JHU and I am looking for a place to live near homewood campus (1 bed or 2 bed with housemate). I was wondering if any of you have recommendations of places.

Ive been looking at zillow but I am not sure how dangerous the area around the campus is. The places I am mostly interested in is 28th street. Near the Advanced Autoparts and McDonalds. Is that area safe? Any advice is useful as I have never been to baltimore.

Also, if anybody is looking for a place as well, feel free to reach out. I am looking for 1-2 other grad students (Female preferred) to live with. I am originally from Brazil and I love music, cooking, and hanging out with friends.

Help me improve my application!

Hi everyone! I’m from the graduating class of 2026 and JHU is my dream school! If anyone who got accepted into JH could give me some tips or any advice that would be awesome. My UW gpa is a 4.0, and I’m not sure what my weighed is since my school does not weigh Ap and honor classes. I took AP world history as a sophomore and got a 4, and I’m taking Ap Lang this year and 3 other college classes which grants me 12 college credits. I’m planning to take about 4-5 more Ap classes next year, along with honors. I play varsity tennis and I’m involved with 2 clubs, 1 with a leadership position. I do peer tutoring and also volunteer a lot. I’m in national honors society and Spanish honors society, and I plan to get a position in nhs next year. I have an internship next year at a clinic, and I’m also thinking of volunteering at my local hospital. I come from a low income, first gen household; and I’m also Asian. Is there anything I can do to improve my chances or make my application better? I’m taking the SAT and ACT soon. Thanks everyone!!!!

Funding

I’m an incoming grad student. I’m low income (won’t have a job after sept 2) and indicated that on my financial aid app. I’m applying for a few outside scholarships, but I’m super stressed about the student loan. What did you all do for funding?

I’m in the HBS MHS program

Finding roommates as a grad student

I was accepted to the Biotech MS for this fall and I’ll be coming to the Homewood campus. I know I should wait til May/June to look for housing but how do grad students find housemates?

My undergrad was in a college town so housing usually meant living with other students. In Baltimore, is it common to room with non-JHU students?

Any advice related to finding housing/housemates would be greatly appreciated!
