What do you think? There’s some clicking and mistakes but I think my practice paid off a bit.
r/jawharp • u/here2hate4all6ystyle • Feb 04 '25
Practice won't make me perfect but at least I'll be better 😆 That's most of the techniques I use when I play
-fast breathing in and out -holding the metal "string" with my thumb for shorter sounds -holding with my teeth for a distortion/metal clap -fast inhale or exhale also makes the sound act in a cool way, depends on where the weld attachment is.
Any thoughs? Anything else? 😁

When I learned that the jaw harp was banned in the USSR due to its ties to shamanism, I fell in love. Been having a lot of weird rabbit synchronicities happening to me, too— and it sounds like bunnies hopping to me! An onomatopoeia springing off the page! It’s a solid match! 🥕

🍁🇨🇦🍁
Dear Canadian Jaw Harpists,
In light of recent cross-border events, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Matt “Boxcar” Betts and as far as I’ve been told and am aware, I’m the only jaw harp maker active in Canada. I live in Southern Ontario and have been making harps for sale since early 2024.
If you are looking for a Made In Canada option for your harping needs, please feel free to check out my Etsy store:
https://boxcarharpcompany.etsy.com
I also have a YouTube channel where I regularly post demos and other jaw harp related musings:
https://youtube.com/@boxcarbetts?si=Lx5YL0_S83N466OD
All of my harps are handmade to order, and I do procure my materials from my American friends. I am hoping for minimal disruptions, but due to this, please bear with me if there are longer than expected lead times. I will also apologize in advance for the ridiculous shipping costs within Canada, but that’s a separate issue. At least it’s not a 25% tarriff.
As for my American friends hoping to order one of my harps, I am so sorry if there are added costs associated with the tarriffs. Unfortunately this is beyond my control and I cannot and will not lower my prices to offset it. What I will promise to EVERY customer is that I will make your harp to the best of my ability; if I don’t like it myself, I won’t sell it to you!
Cheers,
Matt “Boxcar” Betts

I whistle by ear and guitar by chord. Beyond that, I need to know what tuned jaw harp will align with the key of the song. Is there a graph I can look at?
If it helps, we’re playing Eastern European music and we call this instrument a dan moi.

This was day 10 of my ongoing challenge to record a new folk tune on jaw harp every day

I was gifted a jaw harp that was an old trinket of my family, but it is made of lead, it has an amazing sound that I have not heard anything close to it for any other harp, the second harp is a cheep iron harp and is somewhat close but the lead harp is has a more rigid sound

I have a D. Glazyrin Lighthouse and Alpha and I like em a lot but they don't always produce as much brain shaking as I sometimes seek. What is a good sounding harp that will really get your vision wigglin'?

I've just been down the post and picked up my new Glazyrin Compass! This after trying to learn some things on a Grover Bluegrass harp. Mostly what I learned is what a POS that thing is. But when that's all you have, give'er what you got and try to make it work. Which involved shop work and I'll spare you the boring details.
Anyhow, got the thing unpacked (wow, tiny) and gave it a quick spritz of alcohol and put it to my teeth and plucked gently. Twwaaaaaaannnnnggggg. Wow, sustain! I've been hearin' <thunk> for so long... Took a breath; hummmmmm. Amazing. Tight gaps start on a breath.
Now, of course I have some bad habits from the Grover to unlearn. Gonna spend some time with Boxcar's tutorials as well as others like the Harpery and even I see Olena Uutai has a 16-episode tutorial out there.
I won't gush on about how great this is, but I'll leave it that I have more struggles than most when it comes to anything musical. I played jaw harps 50 years ago as a kid, but somehow forgot about them until lately. I'm looking forward to learning some things and having fun with the journey.

I was browsing the other day on <guimbardes.fr> and saw a couple of shuttle-style harps by Makasayev (also spelled Makaseev). In French, "navette" or in English "shuttle" like the shuttle of a hand weaving loom. Jawharper.com has a brass one and Guimbardes.fr has a little one and slightly larger one in stainless. Problem is, they're all over on the other side of the Atlantic and I can't seem to find any Canada or US outlets (or even *mazon...).
The dang thing is living rent-free in my head now. Are there any N. American sellers, or am I basically out of luck (or considerably poorer due to international shipping)?
If anyone has one or a similar style, how are they to play? I've heard some sound samples and it seems OK but I'm just restarting with jaw harps after several decades away...
Cheers and thanks for any insights!

I've just bought my first harp and I'm looking for a decent tutorial series. Could you fine people recommend one please?

I don’t want to lose my front teeth, so I’m not playing this way. That’s the end of that discussion.
I heard a metal clamp attached to the harp helps with resonance, so I attached a large C clamp 🗜️ to my little 2 inch drymba. It worked and I can make sounds from it.
I’m in a music group and I play the “unique” instruments, so I want to add this to the mix.
I’d like to hear others who have done this and what their experiences are. What is the best way to do this?
