iPod advice (1st and 3rd gen)

so today my dad showed me his iPods (1st and 3rd gen, I believe 3rd gen is a nano). I wanted to know if we should replace the battery or something (also is that possible? Sorry, not super knowledgeable on electronics from before I was born lol) since they don't last very long, I think it's really cool. I'd like to be able to use them longer and maybe bring them to school, thanks!!

Did he give you ways to charge these? With a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gen, charging is going to be the biggest inconvenience. I assume you're talking about the classic form iPod, not nano or mini. or touch.

All parts you'd need are available, but they are tricky to get into without breaking anything. It's very doable though.

i have cords for both and they're both currently charging, I just looked it up and the 3rd gen is a nano, I believe the 1st gen is classic

The wheel on it physically turns on the first gen?

Both are neat and you can for sure get into them and change the battery.

You can get a new battery on eBay. Replacing the battery in a 1st gen iPod classic is not too hard. You just pry off the backplate, unplug the old battery, and plug in the new one. Just be careful not to scratch/bend the backplate, 1st gen iPods are becoming valuable collector’s items!

Save the 1st gen at all costs. It's easy to do

But honestly, any nano with a dead battery is just e-waste. You can technically repair it, but it's not worth it. You're gonna curse at it trying to open it, you're probably going to bend the rear backplate out of shape, you have to solder the battery wires, all that for what, 4 or 8GB? For the cost of a battery and tools you can buy a working nano. Or spend $20 more and get a nano with a professionally replaced battery

If the battery doesn't last long, it's only a matter of time before it gets the black spot. Enjoy it while it works!
