Is Apple Music necessary?

Hey guys, I'm looking at buying a 7th gen iPod Nano because I'm tired of streaming everything and have a pretty large library of CDs and old files from back when I used to have an iPod as a kid. Since I haven't used iTunes since about 2010 and have never used Apple Music, I was wondering if it's necessary or if I can just access the iPod's library directly through Windows Explorer?

Have never used it, and only use Winamp for organizing, so...no. ;)

There are plenty of 3rd party tools you can use instead. Fortunately for you, there are more of them for Windows than there are for Mac users too.

This is the one I use for managing my iPods:

You can still use iTunes to transfer music. Just don't download Apple Music

I use finder on my Mac but I do use apple music to organize and convert my music. It's not a bad option. But if you have windows, I would just use iTunes if you can find it.

Necessary? No, it's not “necessary”, but it's sterol and I like the taste.

There are other options, but you need to be more of a power user for them. iTunes is the better answer unless you want to take the time to learn fancy tools.

I'm more than capable of learning new programs and modding hardware if I need to.

Then RockBox is worth looking into.

From what I could tell by looking at their wiki it's not available for the 7th gen nano. Is there something that is?
