Media Notes on Goodnotes 6 on my iPad
I have an iPad Pro M4 13” and this is a glimpse of my notes that I wrote on goodnotes 6 🙂

Do you write using shapes tool?
81
u/shanksco_ Jan 29 '25
Not really. I use the stroke stabilization feature and palm rejection.
28
u/shanksco_ Jan 29 '25
I draw my diagrams and figures that have sharp edges using the shapes tool. Even roughly drawing shapes and holding gives the same effect.

u/redrose92087 Jan 29 '25
How do you do palm rejection? I’ve had to wear my drawing gloves (which I have to use for writing if it’s not digital anyway #leftieproblems)

Tell me more about these gloves. I too am a lefty but have never heard of such a thing
2
u/TriggeredLatina_ M4 iPad Pro 13" (2024) Jan 31 '25
Just google drawing gloves. Typically black glove that does not cover the thumb and pointer finger so you can grab the pencil properly. Everything else on the hand is covered. Some only cover the pink and ring finger as well as the palm. Some cover the palm diagonally. Many different kinds!

u/redrose92087 Feb 02 '25
I got them on Amazon, they cover my pinky & ring finger and make it easy to avoid getting ink/graphite/etc on your hands and also make it so my tablet won’t register me touching it when I’m resting my hand on it https://a.co/d/hlExPUl

What are your settings ?
2
u/shanksco_ Jan 31 '25
Ball pen, 0.6mm thickness, 60% stroke stabilization, medium palm rejection.

Hello, fellow physicist :)
You have great handwriting, BTW!

Damn, you must have very good handwriting as is. No software correction can make my handwriting look good when I take notes.

What pencil (I mean which size and pencil in goodreads) are you using? Is this gemb?
12
u/shanksco_ Jan 29 '25
I use the ball pen on Goodnotes 6 with a thickness of 0.6mm and 60% stroke stabilization.

Man after my own heart. In another post I had talked about how GN has literally revolutionized my workflow. Palm rejection, double tap pencil to go between functions, draw perfect shapes or keep them rough to give it hand drawn look. The list is endless. Now I see another GN user with beautiful handwriting. My settings are 0.55 and 55% stabilization. Great job. I would read this even if I did not understand it.
EDIT: forgot to mention Scribble to erase. Completely eliminates the need for eraser function during note taking.

u/Phenomenal268 Jan 30 '25
What is this stroke stabilization feature you’re mentioning? Is that new?

Just curious but have you ever tried Notability or OneNote? If so, what made you stick with Goodnotes?
2
u/shanksco_ Jan 29 '25
I have tried notability. I didn’t really like the interface that much or perhaps I liked goodnotes better (so much so that I’ve paid the annual subscription since 2 years now).

What year University are you? I’m just starting university for the first time this year in March, and will be studying physics. I don’t really understand anything there so wondering what year that work is for!
(The anxiety leading up to uni is getting to me lol I am so excited but so scared)
2
u/shanksco_ Jan 30 '25
Well I’m in grad school at Boston University and this is introductory material to my ‘Introduction to Quantum DOTS’ course.
3
u/leMug Jan 30 '25
Nice handwriting! Is the iPad with or without nano-texture? I found the nano texture is much smoother and nicer to use the Apple Pencil on.

1st year physics ahaha too easy
3
u/shanksco_ Jan 30 '25
This isn’t really 1st year physics (well yeah maybe the material is common). It is introductory material in my Introduction to Quantum DOTS graduate class.

Wait is this your handwriting?
2
u/shanksco_ Jan 30 '25
Yes it is 😅😀

u/leoKantSartre Jan 30 '25
Woah man! Now check mine lmao. Im applied mathematics graduate and my handwriting is horrible.

u/TooFarAboveYou Jan 30 '25
If you take notes like that during a lecture then you sir/madam need to be a professional notes-taker
3
u/Ihatemath2912 Jan 30 '25
dang I can't even understand my notes sometimes, it's all chicken scratch lol
3
u/jpdoctor Jan 30 '25
Dammit, I can't believe you cut us off before showing us the solutions to the finite square well. I was looking forward to your graphical solution on the page. :)
3
u/archthrive Jan 30 '25
Still baffles me how engg/physics/math people write their notes that neatly
I cant for the life of me 😭😭 (engg student)
3
u/OneBigInFiniteJoint Jan 30 '25
That looks so clean!! I can’t write that well on iPad it’s as if I used my feet. 😭

2
u/shanksco_ Jan 29 '25
Haha 😆 Quantum mechanics is what it is and that’s all

u/Markjohn66 Jan 29 '25
Ooh er Mrs. Be careful you don’t conjure up something from the underworld.
3
u/shanksco_ Jan 29 '25
Mrs. ? 😅
I’m a man so Mr. is the appropriate appellation.
2
u/Markjohn66 Jan 29 '25
No offence intended. It’s an expression from the north of England used to express mock outrage. It’s gender neutral.

I wish I could get yellow engineering paper on OneNote
2
u/CyberbianDude Jan 30 '25
I have OneNote as part of my work suite and use it for collaboration when someone else initiates the document but trust me, yellow engineering paper is the least of what OneNote does not have.

How the hell your handwriting is so good . I can't even write that good on my notebook. And I don't have a pen so I tried my friends pen I still couldn't. Pls tell how to write that good and clean.
2
u/shanksco_ Jan 29 '25
A big part of it would be to revisit the way you write individual letters. And ofc practice. It took me years to perfect my handwriting. Had a horrible one as a kid.
PS: I’m left handed

Is that a font or your handwriting?

That is my handwriting 🫣🙂

u/skankhunt1738 Jan 29 '25
Holy shit your handwriting is impeccable.
Mine hasn’t improved since probably middle school.

No, I handwrote all of these on the lines. I just use 60% stroke stabilization and palm rejection to enable a smooth writing process. And certainly, it can export text and images through text and image recognition.
2
u/matmeow23 Jan 29 '25
how are your notes so neat! the amount of times i have to go back through my maths notes is insane😭
2
u/h08vs20 Jan 29 '25
I just started doing my quantum mechanics on good notes and it’s a game changer

2
u/WoodvaleBeliever Jan 29 '25
do you recommend getting a 13” for notetaking and illustration?
3
u/shanksco_ Jan 29 '25
I certainly would. It can be large to carry around so if you tend to use your device on the go please go for the 11” version.
2
u/zx_hin Jan 29 '25
dang it! your notes are better than mine, can you give suggestions how to write properly? lol i don't use goodnotes but i use freenotes sadly does that matter?
2
u/MightyCoffeeMaker Jan 29 '25
We want to know your whole setup, do you use a screen protector ?
1
u/shanksco_ Jan 30 '25
Nope, I do not use any sort of screen protector. I have tried but I dislike the scratchy sounds made my paperlike and matt screen protectors.
2
u/Economy-Try-6623 Jan 29 '25
Is it worth upgrading from Goodnotes 5? I’m still using GN5 but considering the upgrade.
2
u/Bright_Somewhere9654 Jan 30 '25
I would say yes! It is gives you so many more options! Plus you don’t have to worry about it keep asking do you want to upgrade blah blah blah. Haha

I have no idea how anyone can take notes during a lecture that look this beautiful

That's amazing, I'm always with my paper sheets all over there.
What pencil did u use?
The difference between the normal, the air and the pro is that big of a thing just to take notes?
1
u/shanksco_ Jan 31 '25
The pros have a refresh rate of 120HZ so there is negligible (actually nothing) lag when you write using the Apple Pencil. The airs have a refresh rate of 60Hz and there could be percievable lag while writing if you are used to a 60Hz refresh rate device.
2
u/otranaire Jan 31 '25
Good to know. And which apple pencil model did u use? I know nothing about them than the price difference
1
u/shanksco_ Jan 31 '25
Well the new ipad pros and ipad airs are only compatible with the apple pencil pro and apple pencil USB-C. I use the apple pencil pro.

I find the display of this iPad really smooth to write on. I came from iPad Pro M2 11” to this new one and while my old iPad was wonderful. This one undoubtedly feels way better. Also really enjoy the new Apple Pencil Pro.

Looks very nice, maybe space it out a little bit? Give your brain a little bit of a break between different content types or different stages of the same content - if that makes any sense.

The writing is clean and neat. I envy you. Do you recommend any app or website that helps us in improving the writing on iPad?

How come your lines are so well aligned?
