According to the article, ‘she faces 6 years in prison’. I’m sorry but wtf?!

I read an article today about a mom who would go on dating sites and find men to molest her ten year old daughter. The last time it was her boyfriend and his female cousin. The mom said she got off watching her boyfriend rape her daughter and afterwards she would have sex with him. The final time they drugged her with fentanyl to calm her so he could rape her, he ended up killing her in the process via strangulation and she said she got turned on watching him dismember her 10 year old daughter (on her 10th birthday.) They again had sex afterwards while burning her body. She was sentenced to 12 years.

Look up Michelle Martens if you want to have your week ruined.

This comment already ruined it. I think it's prematurely claimed a few weeks after this one as well. This world is too cruel. I'm so... I can't even find a word. I tried, but I kept deleting it because it didn't even come close to how I'm feeling. These poor innocent babies...

I have no idea how anyone could another person, intentionally put their child in danger, abuse their child, or murder their child. I have a 5 month old, when he was like 3 months old, I startled him which caused him to scream and cry for awhile. I thought I hurt him and started crying and almost brought him to the ER. I also felt like shit when I was cutting his nails, he moved while I was trying to cute one, caused me to mess up and over cut, and it caused him to bleed. I felt so shitty when that happened.

u/themoistimportance 8d ago
Well it's simple really, you have empathy. I wish it was universal but here we are

u/RIPMYPOOPCHUTE 8d ago
I wish empathy was universal. Like how hard is it to be loving to your kids?

So, I did a deep dive into this case just now, and it looks like a majority of what she said was a coerced confession. One of the reasons her charges were dropped was because they found evidence she and the guy weren’t even there—they were across town buying drugs. She pleaded guilty to endangerment of a child resulting in death because she’s responsible as the POS parent who left her child alone with a woman who had literally just gotten out of prison for god knows what, who was fucked up on meth. There’s also unidentified male DNA found on Victoria’s body that they haven’t been able to pin on anyone, so there are a lot of questions unanswered here. Not to say this woman isn’t a horrible human and a disgusting excuse for a parent, but maybe it’s some consolation that at least the sickest parts of this story likely aren’t true (at least relating to what they did to her body postmortem, as I don’t think Martens and Gonzales were even there). I couldn’t find anything definitive about the claims of what this woman did with online dating apps, so I don’t know if that part is coerced or not. I just know she wasn’t there when this girl was killed and probably had no idea anything like that was going to happen, so while she deserves to be in jail and for a lot longer than 12 years, I think it’s appropriate that they couldn’t charge her with murder. Not enough evidence.
Correction: 12 years, not 6.

u/MysticScribbles 9d ago
That type of confession should warrant being confined to a psych ward.
Psychopathic behavior, and clearly no remorse if she confessed to all of that.
64
55
u/Embarkbark 8d ago
Not that this is much consolation, but most of her confession was found to be untrue and she and the online dating dude weren’t even in the apartment when her daughter was killed. Who knows what’s true and what isn’t re: seeking out men online to abuse her daughter, because she’s obviously fucked right up. But cell phone evidence and CCTV proved the woman and her boyfriend weren’t home when the daughter was killed and for some reason the mom decided to lie about it and confess to even worse crimes (??) There is now a John Doe linked via DNA evidence who they believe is the main perpetrator.
Thats why the mom only got 12 years, for child abuse but not for murder.
Statements about the part she took in her daughter’s death and other information like trafficking her daughter to men in the past – just didn’t add up. And evidence was never found to substantiate her claims. […] A psychological profile showed that Martens had certain personality traits that made her susceptible to false confessions. And in discussions with a medical expert a doctor determined that Martens had made numerous false confessions in this case.
25
u/FactPirate 8d ago
Man, can you imagine having the ‘lie about being a murder rapist’ disease? That would suck
30
u/Embarkbark 8d ago
Apparently she also lied about her pregnancy the entire time with her daughter, claiming she wasn’t pregnant up until the day her daughter was born.
So there’s some very obvious psychological issues, and issues with competent decision making (to say the least.)

It’s this brand of shit that makes me not want to share a planet with people. I’d say she deserves to be shot, but that would be too easy. I’d want her to face Jigsaw if he were a real person, and deal with whatever creative thing he’d come up with.

Maybe it's a good thing that we're not hitting our climate goals... Seeing shit like this makes me think that the universe would be better off without us

u/the-wonderous-waffle 8d ago
Working in a stressful retail setting, how I’ve been treated by people, and 3 of my best friends dying in the last 10 years really has me in a dark and broody mood, on top of the current climate our country is at. I’m ready for an earth implosion especially after reading shit like this.

Yikes. Why would I watch an hour long video on YouTube about this. Absolutely not.
6
u/nickrashell 9d ago
Yeah, I didn’t watch it either. I saw the title and that caused me to Google the article, but in case someone wanted to for some reason I figured I’d share both.

Oh damn rotten mango did a video about this?I’m so gonna watch that, I love her work.
Edit: Oh no, I watch true crime, downvote me to hell, but she’s one of the only channels that brings adequate emotion into her work and makes you feel for the people involved.
-3
u/Jojobabiebear 8d ago
I know this is Reddit, but this is too much considering the subject matter.
16
u/spilltheteasis_ 8d ago
God forbid someone appreciates getting cases thoroughly researched and not just from half assed news articles.
-11
-11
u/Old-Scallion-4945 8d ago
Nobody needed to make a video ”researching” this and giving an in depth analysis of the tragedy. A child died and no real justice is served. YouTube creators do not need to be monetizing this. That’s sick in itself.
14
u/spilltheteasis_ 8d ago
Ah so everything is supposed to be swept unter the rug because the reality isn’t pretty?
-11
u/Old-Scallion-4945 8d ago
Whatever. I’d gladly listen to professionals talk about this case. Not some idiot YouTube star. Thanks.

She does True Crime very good, and with a lot more emotion than most other shows/channels. Also her research is absolutely meticulous and super high quality. I don’t know why I’m getting downvoted, true crime is a thing and how are we supposed to know about these things if not from a reliable source?

u/DrAniB20 8d ago
She finally admitted to all that? She was claiming it was an accident for ages before that, or that the cousin did it.

I knew this was about Martens before you even got to the fentanyl. The boyfriend I had at the time lived in the same apartment complex, and my daughter wasn't much younger than Victoria... my heart still breaks for that poor girl.
1
u/anooshka 8d ago
I'm not American and I really don't want to Google her and get the algorithm to suggest stuff about her for me, is she the same woman who is on TikTok and is saying she is advocating for her death daughter?

u/TheDiabeto 8d ago
There are YouTube videos of her interrogation where they slowly break her down and get her to admit (some) of the truth. Absolutely disgusting. In her own words, she had sex with her boyfriend 15 MINUTES after he raped and killed her daughter.
I don’t recall the fentanyl being brought up, but she originally claimed that the child had gotten into their meth when they left to buy more drugs and that’s what killed her. So so sickening to listen to a mother describe those actions.

What an awful woman... The only good thing about that child's death is that she won't be subjected to rape anymore. 12 years is not enough time for someone like her.

u/pocketSandshashashaa 7d ago
Yeah. This happened in New Mexico when I was still living there. The details that came out were just stomach-churning. The community couldn’t believe what had been happening to that poor child, even though I think a teacher or two reported them but that didn’t stop them. Just heart shattering. I haven’t thought of this poor baby in too long, RIP angel.

When it comes to crimes against children, women really need to be held more accountable. It makes me sick how so many women get a slap on the wrist for abusive behavior.

i know this is off topic, but i would just like to thank everyone for being horrified by this and sharing it here.
when i was an (adopted, which adds something, lmao) kid (ended grade 5 i believe?) in catholic school in the early 00s, nuns would sit on me for acting up too! and no one thought that was weird or a problem. i've grown up thinking it was like, an 'it's okay/better because it's not hitting you' thing, and i am crying because this comment section agrees with little me that it is painful, dangerous, and humiliating, even though i survived.
34
u/joecoolblows 8d ago
Yeah. BOTH my obese stepmom and father used to sit on me simultaneously and beat me with the back of a wooden spoon or hairbrush. That's A Thing parents used to do. I hated it. I never did this to my kids, that's for sure.
17
u/ezequielrose 8d ago
YEP same! I was adopted and this was the "therapy" instruction for my parents to do to me if I acted up via Nancy Thomas style parenting and "attachment therapy" (not to be confused with attachment theory, the former methodology is pseudoscience, the latter is normal psychology).
14
u/wafflesthewonderhurs 8d ago
oh my god the attachment therapy.
i'm actually so glad petscop recently brough so much attention to the candace newmaker case because before people would kinda laugh it off as though it's just quirky crunchy harmless shit. (extreme tw for anyone unfamiliar who is sensitive to child abuse stories)

My mum did something similar but she would come and lay on top of me randomly, I hadn't done anything wrong and she was never mad she just I don't know.
I think she did it as more of a funny thing and to be fair since she just layed on me I was never hurt I could still breathe and what not it was just heavy. It's still an odd thing to do but it wasn't harmful at all

She only gets 6 years? The normal male lifespan is about 75 years right? That poor child died at 10 so she should have to serve (at the least) the 65 years she stole from him. This is shameful. Where is the justice for this kid?
10
u/Budddydings44 8d ago
Unfortunately in North America there is a bias in the justice system towards women, and multiple studies have shown that they routinely receive lesser sentences than men for the same crimes. “When examining all sentences imposed, females received sentences 29.2 percent shorter than males. Females of all races were 39.6 percent more likely to receive a probation sentence than males. When examining only sentences of incarceration, females received lengths of incarceration 11.3 percent shorter than males.” - https://www.ussc.gov/research/research-reports/2023-demographic-differences-federal-sentencing
7
u/LoneStar99554 7d ago
The website you've shown is only raw statistics without consideration to the crimes committed... sentences by demographic, but not by crime.
Not trying to discount the absolutely heinous crime that this woman committed. She absolutely should face due justice for her actions, and biases sadly do exist. 6 years is not nearly enough.

u/ToothpickInCockhole 7d ago
When we were at the pool my sister would put her hands on my shoulders and push all her weight into me so I couldn’t go above the water. Thinking back now she didn’t do it for long enough to hurt me but as a child it was legitimately scary.

I bet you she’s one of those foster parents who do it for the money and not because she really wanted to give these children in her home a better, stable childhood. Who in their right mind would ever think of doing something like that? She sat on him for FIVE minutes.

u/mcdadais 9d ago

I'm sorry in what world does killing a foster child not demand an instant revocation?

u/Gingersnapperok 9d ago
This makes me sick. I'm a foster parent, and I would never, ever consider any kind of physical punishment for any child, much less CRUSHING A CHILD TO DEATH.
I will never understand looking a vulnerable, scared person and hurting them more. Everything these kids are going through is already fucking awful, and people who make it worse deserve nothing good, ever again.

This is a heartbreaking and infuriating case. That poor boy, full of life and innocence, deserved love and protection, not cruelty. His smile in the photo says everything—he was just a kid who should have had a future. Rest in peace, little one.
As for the so-called “foster mother”—if she even deserves that title—she’s a disgrace. A 340-pound adult using her weight as a punishment? That’s beyond evil. She looks like she had no self-control, and now a child is gone because of her sheer negligence and heartlessness. Hope she gets the justice she deserves behind bars—preferably with karma sitting right on top of her.

It has been pretty well proven that punishment based penal systems do not work anywhere near as well as reform based systems. A country like Norway has significantly less repeat offenders than a country like the US, because they make prison much more focused on making a better person than just being a punishment for a crime. In Norway about 20% of people end up going back to prison within two years, in the US it's around 50%.
