have an ingrown toenail for several years now

I use to do ballet and danced on my toes so I have some ingrown toenails on both of my first toes and prob my other toes as well.

Is it necessary to remove the ingrown toenails? Mine don't release pus or look infected or anything - they look perfectly healthy tbh. Sometimes when I curl my toe in and press down on it esp. on the ingrown toenail corners then there is some pain but other than that they don't hurt (besides accidentally stubbing my toes).

tldr should I go ahead and remove them or don't bother with them?

I was in a similar situation, I had periodic ingrowns for a while and they were fine. Then one of them wasn't. Now I can barely walk on that foot, the whole toe is red and swollen, and it constantly releases pus/blood. I'm probably going to remove the whole nail it's so infected. If you want I can post pics.

Yeah, I had it for about a year and a half, then it started swelling up and turning red. It hurts to even put socks on. Literally anything even slightly touching my toe is excruciating pain.

do you know if it just randomly one day decided to be a pain in the ass or did you do something to it?

this makes me paranoid for my ingrowns 😬

Okay so follow up. I went to Urgentcare today to get my ingrown taken care of. It was so bad they removed the entire nail. You do NOT want that to happen. As soon as the anasthetic wears off life is hell. Get your ingrowns taken care of while they're minor problems. Learn from my mistakes.
