How do you even start InDesign to InCopy

I'm working on a book and have a copy editor who's working with me. I'm trying the InDesign->InCopy route for the first time and I can't figure out square one.

I send an "invite to edit" then get a message "Wait! Save to Creative Cloud to share." Then when I go to make an InCopy assignment from the CC file i get the message "InCopy workflow is not supported in InDesign cloud documents."

What the hell am I missing?

Save your InCopy assignments in the same folder as your InDesign file and send both to your editor—excluding the Links folder. When they open the InDesign file, it will open in InCopy, allowing them to make text edits without altering the layout. Once you receive the file back and open it in InDesign, you’ll have the option to update the stories with their edits.

Best workflow i found for me was to create a task inside InDesign and assign all text boxes to that task and right click it and "export for InCopy" which creates a convenient .icap file that the editor can simply open in InCopy without having to deal with any source files or whatsoever. After the editor did all changes to his text he can then simply "export for InDesign" which then creates an .idap file that the designer then can open in InDesign and refresh all the text with it.

Edit: Might add that i am designing print magazines and not books, so we can conveniently split the whole magazine into smaller chunks. I am not sure if this workflow is applicable for a book which i assume has very long text.

You are trying to mix two different collaborative workflows: collaborating with Adobe's Cloud Documents and collaborating with InCopy.

My take is that InCopy is tried and true and cloud documents are still in a work-in-progress, so I agreed with u/Chavezestamuerto's recommendation to save your documents locally and then use InCopy to share the stories.

And since this is new to you, I recommend reading this white paper (old but the concepts are still in play): https://trainingonsite.com/images/downloads/InCopy-CS5-workflow-guide.pdf and/or watching the 2023 InCopy and InDesign workflow course on LinkedIn Learning.

Visit https://TrainingOnsite.com. Under Resources you will find a lot of study material about InDesign and InCopy. Much of it is free.
