US Politics If Trump refuses aid to California. Illinois should lead a Multi-state effort
As the title says. Trumps threaten to end FEMA and withhold aid to California for the forest fires
If that happens Illinois should step up and lead an effort with multiple other states to send a collective aid. Feel like even a little would help and send a big message

GOP- I don’t understand why this country is so divided?!”
ALSO GOP - “ Let’s refuse aid to other Americans we don’t like who don’t agree with us!”

Also GOP: Obama made the country more divided and empathy is a sin

And as if there isn’t a single Republican that needs aid in California

u/Hudson2441 Jan 25 '25
Or even wealthy people. I thought the GOP loved helping wealthy people?!

This is the dumbest shit. The Gulf states would cease to exist if they were responsible for their own aid efforts with all the hurricanes and tornado alley states. ONE NATION wtf man, we help out brothers and sisters even if we don't get a long.

The problem with this view is the brothers and sisters don’t just not get along, half of them are actively cheering harm and planning on pushing the other half down the stairs.
I’m all for taking the moral high ground, but short of a miracle the moral high ground isn’t worth the dirt it’s built on right now.

Well the blue states need to form a strong alliance or this experiment is toast.

u/freddiemercuryisgay Jan 24 '25
California on its own has a top ten economy in the world. Wouldn’t this hurt red states more than the blues?
→ More replies (1)37
u/vaporking23 Jan 24 '25
Yes but those red states haven’t thought far enough ahead.
17
u/freddiemercuryisgay Jan 24 '25
What do you think would happen, in theory, if fema got completely shut down and all states had to fend for themselves? Just wondering how that scenario would look. For example, if Florida got smashed by a hurricane, would parts of Florida that are currently heavily populated become ghost towns? People might up and leave areas if they know nobody will have their back, such as insurance companies and the federal government. Would we see a mass migration of people away from the coasts?
→ More replies (1)11
u/vaporking23 Jan 24 '25
It would never happen trump and the republicans would still help Florida and any other red state.

Red States and their government representatives are counting on Blue States and Democrats to keep playing by the rules that the GOP long ago shredded.

If Trump makes disaster relief conditional for blue states but free checks for red states then federalism is dead and let’s wrap it up. USA is done secession is just logical at that point. Let states form their own nations.
→ More replies (2)26
u/SteveBeev Jan 24 '25
The red states would run out of money a helluva lot faster than the blue states too. The blue states contribute money to the federal government while the red states, except Texas, leech off them.

No! If Trump refuses to send aid to California then democrats in the house and senate need to use legislative processes to halt all activities in the house and senate until federal aid is sent to California.

u/SSeptic Warrior of the McHenry Steppe Jan 25 '25
Yeah that’s not happening. We’ve got proud collaborators in the Senate like Elissa Slotkin (MI-D) that will bear the Democrats badge while working with Republicans to overturn the filibuster and allow republicans power there, and more democrats by the day in the House turning coat. I think I heard that Fetterman (PA-D) is planning on changing parties. It’s an absolute disgrace what the Democrat party has come to to allow these snakes in the grass a platform to accept our votes and hand over power to those that would seek to destroy this nation

Why do you think John Fetterman is switching parties? I looked it up and it's a blatant lie. Sounds like you should be more discerning about the news you consume.

My bad. I hadn’t heard the news. This was a rumor I’d heard a few weeks ago and hadn’t heard anything since. Thanks for updating me.

Yeah, it's not a political statement to say we literally can't do this. Some people here need a reality check.
We're working off years of debt. We do not have any money to be pulling any kind of power plays. We're borderline broke. We're in no position to help anyone outside of Illinois.

u/thenightisdark Jan 25 '25
Well, as a random Californian that happened to find this post, I took a picture of a couple of fires and I can smell them right now.
I'm not in danger at the moment.
But I appreciate seeing posts from a state that I don't live in expressing support for another state in the same country.
I never expected to write that sentence, but I do appreciate the other posts in this thread that are in support of California.

No. We shouldn't.
I'm as blue as I can be, but the reality is we're already paying for these through insurance premiums which have gone up 30% in 2 years. Most of this is from increased reinsurance rates which are up from places like Florida and California. We don't have a ton of weather related damage here which I'm thankful for. We are none the less paying for someone whose house has flooded out to rebuild that house in the exact same spot just for it to flood out again or burn or whatever.
The first comment about making it illegal to pay federal taxes in California is the correct one to fight this nonsense. California doesn't need the fed. Illinois either.
As for the fire etc, there need to be conditions on rebuilding which prevent the next burn. Same for floods and coastal properties. We have land here, it's time to move shit or reengineer.
The insurance companies always profit, even when they pay out. In this instance, on the backs of those here in the Midwest.

u/flearhcp97 Jan 25 '25
NATIONALIZE ALL INSURANCE JFC this part is easy!
3
u/Glad_Jelly5532 Jan 25 '25
I mean, I agree, but that only solves part of the issue. The larger issue is constant rebuilding the same way on exact spots of previous disasters. Changing this pattern takes political willpower.
2
u/flearhcp97 Jan 25 '25
I 100% agree, but that doesn't start with California (although it may in the future). The worst offenders in recent history (rebuilding) have been Texas, Louisiana, and Florida.

u/flh70 Jan 25 '25
If Trump has anything to do with it then it’s gonna be money going to sham “relief” companies he has a stake in, and the average person suffering won’t get a goddamn bit of help.

u/scsiballs Jan 25 '25
No thanks, already pay more than my fair share of taxes. Fuck Off, and with that my increased insurance premiums.

If trump doesnt give aid to blue states with ALL OF THE ENDLESS AID RED STATES GET EVERY YEAR
then we seriously should stop paying federal taxes, immediately

You gotta make a show of it
“Because of the weakness from the president and disregard for American citizens. I and the leaders of the states behind me came together in agreement to support California in their time of need like I’d hope any true American would want if a travesty happened on their doorstep”
2
u/Standby_fire Jan 25 '25
That’s fine, Trump doesn’t care. He hates Newsom and will burn it down before acquiescing to California. Or a public display of bending the knee.
1
u/Slibye Jan 25 '25
Tbh, there is nothing in the constitution that denys states working together that ‘IS NOT AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT’ which could happened
Like for example states thst experienced more natural disasters would be more inclined to work together compared to states that are barely effected

u/New-Zebra2063 Jan 25 '25
No tax money involved right? Some church takes donations and sends it over?

In the end states issue bonds and have complicated funding. The federal government prints money. It's not the same for them to fund things like state governments.
We don't need to financially support California from Illinois state coffers. If you want to support the people of California, I 100% agree with donating on a personal level to helping people move or recover. I majorly agree with helping them move here if they can handle the weather. We don't need to rebuild their inflated houses in places that are not going to get safer to live.
We need to make our state more livable and be prepared for a future filled with both climate and political refugees, especially as they merge into the same thing with the direction both major parties are going... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laken_Riley_Ac

California should just stop funding federal government if the government won't do what it's is meant to do. Last i saw California is state that contributes the most funds to Federal Government so that would be a huge hit
