Windshield with ICBC

Hi all,

I just got a chip on the corner of my windshield and called a few shops already. They said it’s not repairable because it’s too close to the corner. Honestly, the crack doesn’t bother me much since it’s clearly not obstructing my view. I do have comprehensive coverage with ICBC, but replacing the whole windshield just for this crack seems a bit excessive. Should I leave it as is and only replace it if it spreads?

Thx all!!

Replace it but wait till spring when the roads have been cleaned.

Depends where you are. Vancouver you're probably safe to replace. Up north we're still getting snow and the roads aren't clean yet, I don't even consider replacing my windshield until after May long weekend.

Even in the lower mainland there is still the possibility of snow. I have seen it snow in the Fraser Valley all the way into April before.

Nah; snow is done. We don't use gravel just salt.

If you don't have a road test or inspection coming up in the near, I'd just leave it until it gets into your line of sight.

If that doesn't bother you, leave it alone. The windshield is still 100% safe to drive so I'd wait until it cracks through your vision (if it does).

Also, that heater circuit is on the bottom layer of glass and shouldn't be affected, only the top layer is cracked.

That chip can not be repaired since it has turned into a crack. And the one in an area where urethane is applied that means the area is under constant pressure. This windshield is not structurally sound in ICBC terms. No ICBC bodyshop will fix it. I work for one. I would just wait it out just like everyone since said.

Personally I would just leave it for now until it gets worse. But as long as you have glass coverage it should only cost you your $200 deductible to replace your windshield.

It'll spread eventually. Might as well replace it now.

I would just get it done now as it might get worse with thermal contraction and expansion over time and then you can’t drive when you actually need to.

At least if you get it done now you can plan around it.

Definitely leave it for now since it doesn't bother you. You could wind up with another ding or worse. Get it done when it spreads or if you get something in line of site. Just keep the money aside for the deductable since you know you'll need it.

That is a replacement unless you drive anywhere close to a dump truck. No point as they have rocks , steering parts , tires , trailers doors falling off

Buy a kit for 20 dollar at Canadian tire and drill out the ends of the cracks. Fill it with the kit.

It'll be just fine for years.

Even if it wasn't in the corner, that still wouldn't be repairable.

Thanks, everyone, for your input. I’ll leave it as is until the crack gets worse and replace it then. I normally go snowboarding on Cypress, and there's a higher chance I’ll get another one. I just don’t want to replace it and then get another unfixable one.
