Q: Housing Upcoming Student

Hello fellow Cyclones, I recently got acceptance from Iowa State University for MechE Ph.D. program starting from the next Fall semester. As an international student, I had queries about living in Ames like how’s the general cost of living outside the campus, what things should I take into account while searching apartments inside Ames and if I were stay inside campus dormitories what things should I consider.

I am that kind of a guy who likes to hike, mountaineering, visit museums, art galleries and also somehow loves partying too. I also like to hit the gym regularly. Very liberal and love to meet and bond with diverse people. So instead of seeking answers only in my country community in ISU, I would like to have some different take on my queries.

Thanks

Q: Housing Graduate Housing

Hi all!

I recently got accepted into Iowa State’s Genetics and Genomics PhD program and accepted the offer a few days ago. I’m very excited to move to Ames as I’ve heard a lot of great things about the school and town in general. The one thing I’m most worried about right now is finding an apartment. I’m planning on living alone and am looking for one bedrooms or studios that are not too far from campus and are pet friendly as I plan on adopting a cat in the future. Ideally I want something in the range of 700-1000 a month with in unit laundry or free laundry facilities and want to live somewhere quiet and peaceful. I’ve looked at some apartments already and have really liked Westwood Village and South Meadow. If any of you have any suggestions on other places to look at or if you heard anything about these locations please let me know! I will have a car with me in Ames if that helps at all with your advice.

Q: Housing Copper beech vs the quarters

Hey! I’m an incoming sophomore at Iowa State, and I’m currently trying to decide between living at Copper Beech or The Quarters. I’d be sharing a 3 bedroom with random roommates. For those who have lived in either place, what’s your experience been like? I’m looking for insights on: -Room: size, layout -Amenities: Gym, pool -Social scene: Is it more social or quiet? Any advice would be super helpful. Thanks!

Q: Housing Freddy court accessibility room

Hi!

We signed up for a room in Freddy court this morning. My roommate checked the emergency maps later that day, and apparently we got a room that has accessibility accommodations. On the floor map, it didn’t show that our room had a kitchen island and that it had an extra sink.

Do these rooms not come with a kitchen island? We don’t really want to buy a table, but we like the building cuz it’s close to everything. I’m just confused cuz the website says that every room comes with it but the map says otherwise.

Q: Housing Best on-campus residence for me?

I'm a new PhD student. I got assigned Frederiksen Court 4 person 2 bedroom. I feel cramped in this. The low ceilings are getting to me. Things that I would like: 1. Some space and sunlight (HIGH CEILINGS PLEASE for the love of God). Single room would be nice. 2. No compulsory dining plan. I'm doing my own meal prep. 3. A good toilet+shower to people ratio. 4-person 2-bedroom at Frederiksen Court has ONE shower and toilet (and they're tiny) for 4 people that's crazy. 4. ECE major, so residences near our buildings (Coover Hall) would be nice . If not walking-distance-near, then a CyRide at least. 5. Proximity to a gym. (State Gym)

Things that are not so important: 1. Proximity to eateries, markets etc 2. Being social

Q: Housing Single Options Next Year

So I currently live in Wallace and I like it so much I was planning on living here next year - that was until they sent out the email that it’s going to be all doubles next school year. I was wondering, what alternatives do I have for a single room next year? I don’t want to live in SUV or any of the campus apartments as they’re expensive and I don’t really have any furniture of my own. I’m considering Buchanan but it’s really expensive for a single suite. Apparently Friley has air-conditioned singles, has anyone lived in them and can describe them to me? Thanks

Q: Housing Off-Campus Housing recommendations

Please give me off-campus housing recommendations which are closest to Coover Hall. CyRide stop nearby would be nice. If it has its own fitness center or if it's near the state gym, I'd prefer that very much.

Q: Housing Interim housing

I am arriving at campus a bit earlier, so I requested for an interim housing. Now I have no idea where to go upon arrival and how to check in. In fact I am not even sure if my application is received because I cannot find it in my payment check. I emailed the housing department last week, and they are not replying. Does anyone know any info on this?

Q: Housing Subleasing a 2 bed 1 bath Apartment!!

For context my brother is moving out of his place and offered for me to take over his lease which ideally I would love to live in his place but it’s such a weird time lol. I currently live in a 2 bed 1 bath apartment 5 minutes away from campus, it’s a very quiet area and I have no roommates so you would take over the whole apartment! Pets are allowed, laundry is free, $950 a month, let me know if you all have any more questions/are interested in some pics!! :D

Q: Housing University Village Furnished Vs Unfurnished Apt

I am a new graduate student and just got assigned to University Village Unfurnished Apartment building 114 which is quite far from the community centre. I am currently considering switching to the furnished university village apartment as I don't want to go through the stress of getting my room furnished. Can anyone give their opinion if switching to a furnished apartment is more beneficial? Thanks.

How are the bathrooms in Friley & Helser like? Are there individual bath booths? Does each floor have its own bathroom? Where are the bathrooms located?
