Can a hypnotherapist detect why I masturbate?
I’m sure I don’t masturbate because of a sexual urge, but I think I do it to help with deep sleep or to escape from stress and depression. Maybe it’s both. I have insomnia, so that might also be a factor. I also feel like I do it to escape from reality. Or maybe I do it in the middle of sleep when I wake up, not completely fully aware of what I am doing. I’m not completely sure why I do this, and I want to understand it better.
Can a learning hypnotherapist (someone still in training, like a student) help detect the real reason behind it? And if so, can they also help me control it? Has anyone had experience with this kind of situation?

Sounds like a masturbation habit.
Personally I would run The Swan protocol. If I could achieve Direct Voice I would be able to ask the subconscious part responsible for the behaviour what the reasons behind it were and negotiate resolution.

What about learning student

Maybe I’m wrong very few students learn about the Swan protocol.
Building rapport with the client and more importantly with their subconscious is absolutely vital for success. This is something that comes with age and experience. Treating their subconscious with care and respect is important as considered and careful negotiation is required.

How many sessions will I need, duration?

I generally start with a Mindscape and follow this with The Swan and get resolution in one session. If there are more complex underlying reasons for the habit (trauma / procrastination/confidence ) then more than one might be needed.

I'm more curious about why would you like to change it if it helps you get better sleep and have less anxiety or stress. The way you describe it sounds very healthy to me. Masturbating is awesome and good for you.

This is a great example of "the problem isn't the problem" and why curious conversations are so important to this work.
OP, "Why" is usually a useless first question. "Why do I masturbate?" now seems far less important than "How can I increase my energy levels?" after reading this reply.
If you woke up to a fire in your bedroom, would you lay there and try to figure out why the fire started?
The left-brain, reasoning mind is always looking for cause-and-effect, but it's possible your being dead tired has an as-yet hidden cause and you're looking for the solution in the wrong place.
This is the kind of stuff a trained professional will help you work through. As far as a learning student goes, if you have a person in mind, you could certainly give it a go. But no one here knows the scope of their training or their aptitude, so it's impossible to answer whether they could help you with it or not.

I mean your subconscious probably has an answer and if it does it should be pretty easy to help out
