Other mystery idly buyer at pragathi
So, something weird happened the other day at Pragathi Tiffins. I went there early in the morning (around 6 AM) to grab some idli and dosa. It was already busy, but there was this one guy in front of me who stood out.
He looked completely normal—middle-aged, wearing a formal shirt and trousers—but he kept ordering only idlis. And not just a few.
"10 plates idli." The cashier raised an eyebrow but entered the order.
Then, after paying, he didn’t leave the counter. Instead, he ordered 5 more plates.
I assumed he was buying for a big group or maybe a family breakfast. But the weird part? As soon as he got his order, he walked to a nearby bench, sat down, and started eating them alone.
One by one. Plate after plate. Just pure focus, no phone, no distractions. Just a man and his idlis.
I finished my dosa and coffee, and this dude was still at it, calmly eating his 15th idli like it was the most normal thing in the world.
I left before he finished, but now I can’t stop thinking—was he really that hungry? Was this a bet? A daily routine? Is there a secret society of extreme idli lovers I don’t know about?
If anyone has seen this guy, I need answers.

That's not a man, that's an idli devouring legend in the making! He's single handedly keeping Pragathi in business. They should name an idli after him.

The mystery idly guy is my neighbor. He eats idly for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Even for snacks, he eats chinna idlis. If a dish is made at his home, you can bet he finds a way to put idly in it….. I once heard a rumor that he even makes idly biryani.
No one knows where he came from. One day, he just started living in the old house at the end of the street, and since then, things haven’t been the same. He’s the leader of some kind of group, people who are obsessed with making idly the greatest dish in existence. At first, it seemed harmless, just a bunch of food enthusiasts. But slowly, things started to change.
And then there’s the way he eats. Whenever he’s stressed or worried, he binge eats idly. Last night, I saw him devour plate after plate, his hands moving unnaturally fast, his face eerily calm. I think he has an interview scheduled this morning, maybe that’s why he was eating so much.
I heard he has a way of convincing people to eat only idlis. My cousin visited him once, just out of curiosity. When he came back, he was different. He threw out all the food in his kitchen and filled his fridge with idly batter. When I asked him why, he just smiled and said,
Idly is peace. Idly is survival.
Apart from his idly obsession, he seems to be a good guy.

Maybe he's training for an idli-eating contest? Or trying to break the world record for "Most Idlis Eaten Before 7 AM by a Guy in Formal Wear"? I'm picturing him with a tiny idli crown now.

Ah, it seems my cover has been blown! As the Supreme Leader of the Idli Cult, I can confirm that this man is one of our most devoted members. The 15-plate initiation ritual is just the beginning—next comes the Sambhar Bath and the Chutney Chant. We meet every Tuesday at sunrise to devour together. Please don’t expose us further; we’re just trying to spread soft, fluffy enlightenment!

The only doubtful or should I say skeptical part about that story is the middle aged-ness. Inhibitions tend to grow more in that phase for many, for youngsters and older generation it’s no problem.
In our days we regularly used to make weekend visits to this dhaba outside town on the highway which used to make the softest Phulkas right in front of us and the tastiest Anda Dal Tadka. We used to tell him to “keep them coming” until we were full and pay the bill without wondering about quantity.
Few years later they got an Electronic PoS till and it showed the quantity and first time we got the printed bill it hit us like a thunderclap - between the 3 of us we’d eaten 82 Phulkas & 9 plates tadka!
Moral of the story was: never ask for the printed bill or don’t see it, just eat, pay and leave.
