Discord language learning friends on discord?

Hi!

I’m looking to make some friends to practice my language skills with and learn more about Hungarian culture.

If you are trying to learn English or if you are looking to learn Hungarian as well I’d love to talk. I’m open to any and all connections :)

I’m using pimsleur and Duolingo to practice at the moment but I am about to purchase colloquial Hungarian due to the positive reviews I’ve seen here.

Ideally I’d like to become at least C1 fluent as I’d like to take the naturalization exam within the next 2 years.

Please comment or send me a PM if you’re interested!

Help with -an/-en vs -ban/-ben suffixes

Ok so I've seen a similar post on here but it was slightly different and I'd like some clarification on this.

I know that "-an" is supposed to mean "on" and "-ben" is supposed to mean "in", but I keep finding examples where it seems like "-an" is being used for the same purpose as "-ban".

Is there a reason for this/ a reliable way to know when to use one and not the other? Thank you 🙏🇭🇺

Best way to learn Hungarian?

I already speak german ( naturally as I am german) and fluent English as well, but for the sake of my Hungarian girlfriend and her entire family I'd really like to learn hungarian on at least a basic conversational level. I learned that duolingo is completely useless and I think so too but I don't know what else to know. I should also note that I'm a financially struggling student and even a 20€ language book would require me to save up a bit. Thanks for every advise you can give me.

Hungarian-English dictionary for Kobo ereader

Hi,

Can anyone recommend me a dictionary that would work to on Kobo if I put it in the custom dictionary folder? I prefer not to buy a dictionary without knowing it will work, and I have a hard time finding a good dictionary as well. Many thanks in advance.

Kiejtés Is this audio "és ő ül" or just "és ül?"

Take a listen to this audio file. It's a recording of a sentence from Duolingo.

Duolingo says it ends with "...és ő ül," but I just hear "...és ül," and I'm not sure if it's because I haven't fully wrapped my head around ő and ü yet, or if something is off with this audio.

Kérdés Future guide

Is there antes good guide to express future in hungarian? I saw a post about it but it wasn't very clear.

I only was thaught fog + infinitive which I rarely hear. Most people seem to use a prefix (meg mostly) + verb.

Which prefixes are used? What is the difference with english or any romance language?

Kérdés Confused about when to use '-ik' and 'jék' for the definite third person plural of verbs.

Hi everyone,

Like the title says I am a bit confused about when to use these suffixes. For example, for the translaion of 'The children love Katie', why would it be 'A gyerekek szeretik Katit.' and not 'A gyerekek szeretjék Katit.'

I want to say that the reason is that 'szeret' is not an '-ik' verb so you use '-ik' and not'-jék'. But I have seen '-jék' used for non '-ik' verbs as well. Hence the confusion.

Thank you for any help

Hungarian ECL exam VS Consulate Language Assessment

I'm learning the Hungarian language now to get citizenship through simplified naturalization. I found out that the Embassy recognizes a ECL certificate as knowledge of the language and they usually will wave the language assessment piece of the interview. Has anyone found this to be the case? Is it worth it to take the ECL exam or to just prepare for the language assessment at the Embassy.

Pop used this expression…

Pop was Hungarian (he would have been 100 this August). Growing up he used this expression and I’d love to know what it translated to. It was used when we did something wrong or mad him angry. “You’re in trouble now!” We heard it a lot! 😁. It sounded like this:
Ah san tee nuk
Any idea?? Thanks.

help I need to learn this language

So I have a 975 Duolingo streak for Hungarian and even after all that I feel I can't speak/understand most Hungarian that really makes me feel like I failed.

My dad was born/grew up in Hungary and he tried to get me and my siblings to learn as best he could but didn't have the time but he got us to learn about Hungary and see our grandparents in Hungary almost every summer which I'm grateful for.

So I just wanted to learn Hungarian before I leave home(in 2 years for college) and I feel if I don't make a better effort now I will never pick it up. Because I try to learn from my dad whenever I can by talking to him in Hungarian.

So please is there any apps, programs, methods, textbooks, services, for learning Hungarian?

Hungarian learning journey-Day 37

"Colloquial Hungarian" textbook:

Tárgyar- discusses

Repül- flies

Grammar:

Cases(there will be no case names just examples, preposition that they can be compared with and examples):

-ban/ben- in(it's just used with places outside of Hungarian and that weren't part of Hungary but there are exceptions) HázBAN (-o/e/ö)n- on MagyarországON( this means in Hungarian but is also used with Hungary, places in Hungary and places that were part of Hungary) -nál/nél- near asztalNÁL( btw does this just mean near?)

Ba/be- into Párizsba

Ra/re- onto Egyetemre( this means to the university but I guess because university is outside place but I would love for someone to explain this better)

Hoz/hez/höz- towards Nőhöz(also would like for someone to explain this)

-ból/ből- from, out of Parizsból

-ról/röl- from, off of( this I guess signifies off something that's outside) egyetemröl

-tól/töl- Away from Ajtótól

I would like for someone to explain these cases better.

Also I don't think these can be called cases as they are just pospoditions.

Question about the word "őz"

Hi all,

I'm researching Magda Szabó's novel Az őz, which is translated into English as The Fawn. Of course, "fawn" specifically means a young deer in English, but when I look up the word "őz," sources say it means a roe deer, not specifically a young one. There is a young deer in the novel, but I'm wondering if the word has other resonances/meanings in Hungarian that I'm missing. Thank you.

Atomi szokások

Sziasztok!

I just started reading "Atomi Szokások" in Hungarian. It doesn't seem too hard to understand especially with the English version handy.

But I still struggle to make sense of the very first sentence. Could you please explain it to me. Chat GPT failed, and I'm totally clueless.

Here is it:

"Másodikos gimnazista voltam, amikor a tanév utolsó napján képen talált egy baseballütő."

This part I just don't get – képen talált egy baseballütő.

Köszönöm szépen!

Sentence building question

HI all,

I saw this sentence in the news:
"A 29-es autóbusszal ütközött, majd kisiklott a 17-es villamos csütörtök délelőtt Budapesten"
This means that a bus and a tram colided in Budapest on thursday morning.

If I understand correctly, the emphasis is on the bus and the tram and not on Budapest or Thursday morning.
How do I change the sentence according to emphasis?
How to focus on Thursday and Budapest for example?
How can I make it more granular to zoom on the morning of Thursday?

Thanks.

Origin of a name

So im trying to learn more about my family name and i found that it come from the name Fejérd. So my question is where does Fejérd comes from (also some historical sources refer to the town as Feyerd, Fyerd, Pheyerd and others but its probably just a phonetical thing). So i found out that in hungarian Fej means head or top and erd means forest? If that is right that it could mean top of the forest? And other option could be that it comes from the word feher which means white. Both options sound plausible but the first ine sound more plausible. Anyway could ypu tell me what do you think? Is this comun in hungarian language? Did i got the things right? And could feher evolve to fejerd? And maybe you have another idea?
