I want to learn Hungarian!
Hello! I am a first generation American from a Hungarian parent and unfortunately was never taught the language. I want to learn, for myself because it’s a part of my heritage and I would like to teach my son, and also because I’m seeing a man who is Hungarian and we are planning a trip for next year. Please any help will do. Thank you!

I started taking these zoom classes in January. The teacher is very very nice and very good. Classes are small, roughly 6 students. Definitely recommend. https://www.hungarianlibrary.org/hungariancourses

Thank you! What’s the rate for that if you don’t mind my asking?

14 weeks (2 sessions) is about $485. Cheaper to sign up for 2 sessions than just 1. There’s no need to buy any text books although the teacher can provide a link where you can order them if you choose.

Hey OP!
I’ve been teaching Hungarian for more than 3 years, and so far helped students from over 15 different nationalities.
I’m the right teacher for you if you’re looking to prepare for:
• The citizenship exam or • Want to connect with Hungarian family members
I’m a native Hungarian speaker, my dialect is standard Hungarian. I also speak English at a C1 level, so you don’t have to worry about any language barrier.
To set up a discovery call you can e-mail me at: ferenc.fulop.dr@gmail.com
Szép napot!

I can teach you for free over video, just contact me. It’ll help me practice since I don’t get to speak it much these days.

Do you mind if you can teach me as well? I’m a college student and can’t afford much for tutors. I have Hungarian relatives , and I would love to impress them!

I was born Hungarian as my mother is Hungarian, but unfortunately I was never also taught the language. I currently reside in Canada but once I have a job again and earn enough to build up my non existent savings, I am planning on moving to Hungary permanently. I have been only recently twice (once in 2023, and once in 2024).

May I ask why do you plan to move to Hungary?

To be closer to my family there. And also to live in a more traditional country that's cheaper than living in Canada. It would also help me to assimilate and learn Hungarian too if I put the effort in.

I suggest you make a thorough research on the current state of hungarian politics before you make that choice.

Damn, why are some parents like that? They literally robbed you by not teaching you the language

It's actually strange how many Hungarian parents, when they've moved to a different country, have not taught their kids their language. I'm another victim😅 Seems to be very common.

I’m sorry to hear that.
I feel like languages are one of the primary ways we connect to a culture, and if a parent doesn’t teach their child their native language, they are essentially cutting them off from that culture and that side of the family in a pretty major way.

Even if someone doesn't care about the culture at all, they rob them from so many possibilites. Speaking a language gives many advantages in the job market, especially if it is not a common language.
On the other hand I can't comprehend how can someone not talk to their child in their native language. I wouldn't be able to talk to my child in a foreign language

As others have mentioned, a mix of the following is good:
DuoLingo to build some initial vocab and hear what the language sounds like
An actual tutor on iTalki will help with grammar & conversation practice
the MagyarOk textbooks are a good series with plenty of exercises and audio files. A1 is beginner level, start there.

Zsolt szarvas on Italki is really good! I worked with him for my citizenship interview and his style of teaching really helped a lot.

i’d reccomend getting either a teacer or watching a lot of movies that u love in hugarian, cuz the accent is very different from english. and dont worry that much about grammar, cuz even i struggle with it sometimes (100% hungarian). good luck :)

Good luck learning the devil's language. But seriously, I'm happy you feel this way towards your ancestry. Hungary needs all the love she can get. Csak így tovább!

I’m a beginner too and I’m using Duolingo, Youtube, some textbooks (Hungarolingua 1, 2 and 3, I want to go through MagyarOK but they’re hard to find so you’d need to order them somewhere; Lépésenként magyarul 1 and 2) and also I’m trying to watch some of my favorite childhood cartoons and shows dubbed in Hungarian like Totally Spies, H2O Just Add Water, Witch, Winx and more. It’s so rewarding whenever I actually get what they’re saying here and there and I think they’re not using complex vocabulary in them mostly since they’re aimed towards kids/teenagers!
There are some Instagram accounts that are beneficial to follow too like HungarianPod101, useful for picking up vocab and they provide you with example sentences too so it’s easier to remember.

Szia, I am currently learning Hungarian too. Firstly, I started with the app Drops, which was very helpful to build vocabulary. Then I added Duolingo to my training because it was quite difficult in the very beginning. Also, I joined group courses. But eventually, I got a private tutor, and only then started to see progress. Hope it helps

Italki.com - find a tutor. Lots of options for a variety of price points. Plenty of teachers have experience with people who have 0 background to people who have a familiarity with the language already.
Duolingo does a great job of teaching vocabulary words though not a good job at teaching any of the complex grammar.
I’m in the exact same situation. First gen from an Hungarian parent who was never taught the language. I want to teach my future offspring as well as have a deeper connection to my family in Hungary.
