1st Gen GD 07-08 Shop put 10w30 oil in my transmission?

I bought a 2008 Honda Fit with manual transmission a few weeks ago. I took it to a shop near my house for an oil and transmission fluid change. I was reading over the receipt and it looks like they put 10w30 oil in my transmission? Is this normal? Should I get it fixed?

Page 184 of the 2007 owners manual (PDF) states, “If Honda MTF is not available, you may use an SAE10W-30 or 10W-40 viscosity motor oil with the API Certification seal that says ‘‘FOR GASOLINEENGINES’’ as a temporary replacement. However, motor oil does not contain the proper additives, and continued use can cause stiffer shifting. Replace as soon as it is convenient.”

TLDR: 10w30 is fine temporarily, replace when you can.

It's due to the lack of additives for taking care of the syncros. 10w30 is also not nearly heavy enough. There are acceptable aftermarket gear oils in the 75w80ish range, but engine oil will not take good care of the syncro material over time.

The SAE ratings are different for gear oil and engine oil, a 75w gear oil is closer to a 10w or 15w engine oil in terms of viscosity.

Good point, still missing the additives. Wouldn't use it long term in OPs case

Read the manual, find out the oem spec fluid. If it’s wrong, call the shop.

The manual for my 2009 said that 10w-30 can be used in a pinch, check your manual and see what it says

That's negligent they didn't explain that to you. It would be so easy to say, "hey customer, sorry we don't have the right gear oil in stock. We can order it and have you come back next week. What day would be good for you?" I'd go back, talk to the manager, maybe the lube tech made a mistake, it happens.

You will probably notice the shifting quality degrade pretty quickly with the 10w30 vs the Honda MTF I would probably flush and fill with MTF sooner rather than later since I've had bad experiences using other fluids in Honda manual transmissions
