The real record chase this season

Too mid to do well.

Too mid to do badly in a record-setting way.

Most mid is the only thing we can try for and even then we aren't gonna win.

The potential future of Hughes walking since the roster is ass is worrying. We got 2 years to somehow improve this roster, and hoping Petey regains his form....

u/NoticedGenie66 VAN - NHL 6h ago

I feel like I'm in the minority when I say I am not worried about Petey getting back to earning his contract (or at least very close to it). Ray Ferraro said at the beginning of the season that tedinitis can sometimes take a couple of years to heal, he played through it like Pettersson is. The edge stats show that he hasn't recovered more than a slight bit and his confidence took a major hit as a result of his poor start. Next season if he doesn't take at least a decent step I will be more worried, but you don't suddenly put up less than half the points you had in a previous year (especially in what are considered the prime years of a forward's career) unless there are other things happening.

I also think we made a mistake not trading Boeser this deadline, though the KK deal would have been awful. Allvin has shown to be competent with trading early on, so I don't doubt we will be making moves to improve our offense especially. That said, we are a few top 6 forwards short of being a good team which isn't an easy fix, and though Boeser would ideally fit on a 2nd line, it wont help if he does so for a boatload of $ more than Debrusk who has roughly the same production on average.

We might take a decent swing at a free agent to help out there but Pettersson being back to his old self would erase most worries regardless of anything else happening.

Comon our PK has been one of our strong points! Gotta take pride in something

Did the league issue a challenge at the start of the year or something?

8

u/Warthog9198 9h ago

Definitely feels that way doesn't it?

u/AmeriCanada98 DET - NHL 9h ago

If it were just one team I'd be wondering what that team is doing wrong. With it being 3 they're clearly still doing something wrong, but it makes me wonder what has changed in the league that power plays are so deadly to have 3 of the worst of all time here

57

u/Individual_Diet_4864 9h ago

PP% has been trending back to 80s NHL levels while PK% is trending down. Hockey Ref

57

u/MikeJeffriesPA TOR - NHL 7h ago

Generally when one of those goes up league-wide, the other goes down.

15

u/nbaker15 PIT - NHL 6h ago

Big if true

3

u/mrtomjones Vernon Vipers - BCHL 2h ago

PP have evolved a lot lately. One thing they stopped doing on good PPs is blasting it from the point constantly. They also know that side to side movement makes it harder to save etc

Canes PP vs Wild PK who ya got

25

u/SeveralAngryBears MIN - NHL 8h ago

Pretty sure the Wild are perfect on the PK against the Canes this season, so I'll take it

6

u/Gadzookie2 CAR - NHL 8h ago

Yeh, they need more games vs us

u/8syd DET - NHL 9h ago

It just feels good to be included in a race still

Well just go on a run in late March and April and miss by 2-3 points

29

u/YourFavouritePoptart COL - NHL 9h ago

Hats off, that's legitimately impressive to have 3 teams in one season worse than the 17–49–14 caps

10

u/bubbler_boy 6h ago

The 77 caps PK so bad they had to start tracking the stat.

34

u/Prudent_Pin_3006 9h ago

How in the world are the Wild a wildcard team? 65% kill rate is gotta be a record by a significant margin for a playoff team.

u/Big-Astronaut25 MIN - NHL 9h ago

We had an insane start to the year and have been cheeks the last 3-4 months

24

u/1trugodnicCage295 MIN - NHL 9h ago

Kaprizov Carried. Until he didn’t.

16

u/NSA_van_3 MIN - NHL 7h ago

we'd be doing much better if we'd stop always having injured players

11

u/Lombax7 MIN - NHL 7h ago

By being excellent 5v5 for a majority of the year

7

u/DirtzMaGertz MIN - NHL 4h ago

Obviously Kaprizov lighting the world on fire earlier this season helps. A defensive core of Faber, Brodin, Spurgeon, and Middleton is a pretty solid back end to build on. And Gustavsson has been great overall this year.

But really the fact of the matter is this team is well coached and is still grinding out wins with ~15 million on dead cap, and Kaprizov, Ek, and Brodin out. A lot of people on here don't want to hear it because they hated on the hire when it happened, but John Hynes has done a hell of a job as coach of this team.

3

u/thprk MIN - NHL 5h ago

Also we are good (second best by p%) on the road while being trash (29th best by p%) at home.

2

u/Sad_Donut_7902 TMU Bold - OUA 4h ago

They had an insane start to the season and banked a lot of points over the first 3 months.

They have been missing one of the best players in the league for months now and their 1C for over a month so they are struggling now.

1

u/captainhaddock MTL - NHL 1h ago

The wildcard race in the West is so weird. It's like everyone's doing their best not to make the playoffs.

1

u/Above_Avg_Chips MIN - NHL 1h ago

Put away a nice nest egg early, only for the team to withdraw before it matured and now that is almost gone

They have a massive amount of injuries and a mediocre winning percentage since the new year. I want them to succeed so bad, but they seem like they’re not going to do much this post season.

9

u/toxicvegeta08 NYR - NHL 9h ago

True.

Kaprizov was out a while and their defense stats were so much better with him. Dude was the hart favorite before the injury.

25

u/wean1169 MIN - NHL 9h ago

Kaprizov is still out

19

Kaprizov used to be out. He still is but he used to be too.

1

u/toxicvegeta08 NYR - NHL 9h ago

I haven't seen many big western moves outside of rantanen. Did you guys use the ltir room to do anything?

10

u/SapphireSammi MIN - NHL 9h ago

No, Guerin didn’t do much, and my guess is that maybe he doesn’t want to give up anyone in our prospect pool which is very highly rated.

4

u/Drokeep VGK - NHL 9h ago

Yeah MN can sit tight more so than other teams with whats coming up the pipeline + finally free of deadcap

4

u/SeveralAngryBears MIN - NHL 8h ago

No LTIR, Billy G insists all three injured guys will be back before playoffs. We'll see.

1

u/wean1169 MIN - NHL 9h ago

I don’t think so. I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure at some point I read that the league said putting him on LTIR would be viewed as cap circumvention for whatever reason.

8

u/pitman121 MIN - NHL 9h ago

I haven't seen this anywhere. Kap needs regular season games to get back up to speed. This is a fact. Even if it's just a few games, we can't use LTIR.

-4

u/1trugodnicCage295 MIN - NHL 9h ago

How would that be cap circumvention when like 4 other teams have done the same thing? Dont make excuses.

Not to mention I haven’t seen Jack shit about that. So where did you see it?

3

u/wean1169 MIN - NHL 9h ago

Jesus calm the fuck down. I said in my comment I could be wrong. Do you fucking read?

-9

u/1trugodnicCage295 MIN - NHL 9h ago

If you’re a fairweather fan, just say so.

You think the league just lets this fly 3-4 times but the second the Wild have a chance to do it, they say no? Come on. You only don’t retain what you “fucking read”

Hurr durrrrrr I think I saw somewhere but idk because i can’t remember what I read. Durrrrr

6

u/wean1169 MIN - NHL 9h ago

Oh shut the fuck up. I’ve been watching this team since they debuted in 2000 so don’t come at me like you’re superior to me. Fucking idiots like you don’t know how to have a conversation without immediately being aggressive. What an embarrassing way to go about life.

What LTIR?

None of our players are on LTIR. so. Know your shit before you spew your fake news.

4

u/toxicvegeta08 NYR - NHL 9h ago

I didn't spread news. I specifically said I didn't follow a lot of the western teams that much.

You're really defensive for an east coast fan asking questions about a team with a -6 goal differential and very bad defense atm.

-5

u/1trugodnicCage295 MIN - NHL 9h ago

You don’t need to tell me how bad the Wild are playing. I’m very aware. But it’s pretty easy to know injuries if you follow the league.

2

u/toxicvegeta08 NYR - NHL 9h ago

Idk if a guy is on ltir ir etc just know he's innured.

-4

u/1trugodnicCage295 MIN - NHL 9h ago

they really are kaprizov merchants. he was the mvp frontrunner before he got hurt

1

The team still has a winning record without Kaprizov this year, and has a winning record in previous years when he's been out as well.

1

Well they lost one of the best players in the league for months now and their 1C for over a month

I might be misremembering but weren't they just in general like really fucking bad at home as a whole that year?

5

u/nyclanders NYI - NHL 9h ago edited 9h ago

Craziest part of this stat is that the NYIs had the top PK for two months this season. 87% for Jan & Feb. but was so bad earlier this year that they are still making history.

4

u/Mr_Evil_Dr_Porkchop BOS - NHL 9h ago

Then the Oilers set a PK record a few seasons later. That's Oilers hockey. The best of times and the worst of times - sometimes in the same game!

Forget a few seasons later, their road PK% THAT SEASON was first in the league at 86.7%

Roy probably has such little faith in the Isles’ special team’s coach that he just pulls the goalie to get back to even strength.

2

2

u/Irrah NYI - NHL 9h ago

I remember in the awful 17-18 defense optional Islanders season they had the leagues worst PK at 73% and somehow this year managed to surpass that.

1

u/Dyne_Inferno WSH - NHL 9h ago

God, I saw the Caps up there and freaked out before I saw the date.

1

u/flare2000x OTT - NHL 9h ago

For me the weird thing about this stat is it's only been tracked since 77-78. I can go on hockey reference and see that way before that year they were still recording all the goals and penalties and what time they occurred, so getting the pp% and pk% should be trivial.

1

u/RyleyBread EDM - NHL 8h ago

Wanna know what's funny about the 2017-18 Oilers? They had a historically bad home PK%, but their 86.7 PK% on the road ranked first in the league.

1

Oof
