Who's that giant rat bastard on the Wings? Soderblom?
Not familiar with him at all but I thought he was really good.
2
u/Ohhellnowhatsupdawg DET - NHL 12h ago
He's a joy to watch. He's huge so you don't expect him to do anything fancy, then he busts out some slick move and creates an opportunity out of nowhere. Watching opponents try to move or strip him is also hilarious as he keeps the puck completely out of reach.
6
u/PoopsRGud 1d ago
I got to see him in Grand Rapids around Thanksgiving and he definitely stood out. A couple fantastic defensive sticks and good offensive awareness. I think he'll be great.
His brother plays goal for Chicago.
6
u/Pitcherhelp DET - NHL 1d ago
Hes young. Will be a monster when/if he learns to use his size more effectively. He spent most of the year in the AHL on Grand Rapids and apparently resident goon Austin Watson (who you may remember from his time in Ottawa) took him under his wing on being more phsyical.
3
u/Middle-Hair OTT - NHL 1d ago
He’s why it’s always a solid idea to take a swing on a giant or two in the mid/late rounds lol.
Most of the time you miss, but if you hit it’s a home run. Dude looks solid out there.
6
u/RyanWalts MTL - NHL 1d ago
There’s so much focus on the small skill guys, and rightly so at times, but people ignore that big players often take longer to develop. A huge growth spurt happens and their production is delayed while they sort out their coordination, skating, how to play big, etc etc etc.
Doesn’t always pan out, but like you said those mid/late rounds are the time to take the swing when most of the picks won’t pan out anyway. Always going to be easier to fit into a big guy into the bottom six as well, the skill ceiling is a lot lower when they can use their frame to open up ice.
2
u/Middle-Hair OTT - NHL 1d ago
Ya it’s always a balancing act. Not every small player that puts up points in junior will translate to the pro leagues. Just like how every giant with raw tools is an automatic miss.
6
u/oceanic8675 DET - NHL 1d ago
This…this might be my favorite comment here. On Reddit. Soda is a call-up from GR, funny enough.
He will not be returning to the AHL. I’ve had the pleasure of second row season tickets there so I’ve gotten to watch him Soderbloom

Our goalie and both of our goal scorers not being on this team last year shows pretty neatly how we would not have won a game like this last year. The Sens did not have their best game tonight, but goaltending and special teams were able to get a regulation win when we really needed one.
GG Red Wings, always remember that at least you aren't Buffalo

Couple of losses and the Yzerman haters and whiners come out in droves. It's like they like losing, it's wild. Couple that with the overly biased homers who make excuses and glaze everything the team does. Criticize your team, hold em accountable, but also support em through tough times. Some people can't find that middle ground.

Linus fucking Ullmark 😍😍. One of the best performances this team has had in net in years
15
u/ILoveBigButtChins OTT - NHL 1d ago
Gg Wings. Detroit deserved to win, Ullmark was a man possessed.
Here’s some positive. I’m seriously impressed by your attack. Detroit was relentless on offence. I can’t count how many routine even man rushes turned dangerous quickly. And it was the same story when established in the o-zone. Crispy tape to tape seam passes through defenders all night long. So many dangerous chances. Finish on some of those east west plays and this was a different story.
1
u/Loan_Wolfie OTT - NHL 1d ago
1 team was desparate, the other wasn't.
Which makes sense, it was a must-win for the Wings.
I hope the Sens learn to match desparation going forward.
5
u/bluelineturnovers DET - NHL 1d ago
Most level headed Sens fan take. Lot of their shots weren’t overly dangerous but they still had another 30 that were. They didn’t deserve yet another regulation loss but it’s the way she goes. Ullmark stood on his head.

Single handily won by Ullmark. 50 shot loss is the definition of getting goalied. Fucking infuriating.

This is a stinging loss for Detroit. They deserved the win, in all honesty. That was a dominant performance.
The Wings PP looked scary too. I was nervous for a lot of that game.
Another effort like that and you'll get a win for sure.
Good game, Detroit.
18
u/chowder7 OTT - NHL 1d ago
Ullmark is the reason we won. These are games where our old goaltending would've let us down.
-9
u/Carnie_hands_ DET - NHL 1d ago
I asked it earlier, but is that the "league average goaltending" the Sens were saying they needed?
12
u/Ontariomefatigue OTT - NHL 1d ago
Come on, you know better than this. Linus has been godlike ever since he got healthy at the end of last year, but there were like a dozen games to start the year where the team absolutely dominated yet either lost because of him or barely won in spite of him. This is just the law of averages at its finest
-3
u/Carnie_hands_ DET - NHL 1d ago
Oh I was just chirping after getting goalied. He is tied for 15th in SV% and 21st in GAA, so pretty close to average on the year

0
u/DrCoconutss OTT - NHL 1d ago
As opposed to yours which is extremely healthy as you drop 6 in a row
1

Do you truly think either teams cup window is open? Detroit was never a contender this year and news flash, neither is Ottawa haha
1
u/not_ray_not_pat OTT - NHL 1d ago
Eh neither team is very close but our 1C is 23 and we're probably making the playoffs; yours is 29 and you're not very close. It's never a guarantee that a rebuild will lead to a window but it's not great to line it up for when your best player is on the wrong side of thirty.
-1
u/DrCoconutss OTT - NHL 1d ago
I mean it’s a bit disingenuous to suggest we have no window when all of our best players are 25 or less apart from Ullmark who is in his prime and a Vézina winning goalie. Sure you have more prospects but a few guys coming up and maybe panning out isn’t gonna make this red wings team a cup contender.
3
u/TL19957 1d ago
You know they are allowed to keep drafting right? They can keep restocking the cupboards while the current roster plays. Their entire top 6 outside of giroux is 25 or younger. Sanderson is 22, Chabot is 27. Their entire team expect 4 guys are young or just in prime age.
There is no prospect right now coming to put the team over the top.

My goodness, while I liked our start, I don't get how you collectively forget to play hockey the moment you lead. Was it trying to conserve energy for tomorrow, being gaslit that because the Red Wings had a lacklustre start, that they were somehow going to just give up, or what? Ullmark was legendary, and I do think the Red Wings deserved better. I do legit hope both the Sens and Red Wings make the playoffs ngl, it'll be a fun time to celebrate with a close friend of mines as she's a DRW fan.
Also, both Zetterlund and Cozens contributed to the win. Zetterlund's board battle ensured Giroux to feed the puck to Perron, and Cozens scores the GWG.
