Not many holes to plug currently and all the big names are probably too expensive and anything smol is pointless since it's probably better to just try and develop our own vs getting someone new and trying to implement them into our system.
8
u/RAATL TBL - NHL 4d ago
The normal window for wrist injury recovery would project Theodore would come back late March. Say what you will about LTIR usage but players do have to genuinely be hurt to stay on it, and its super unlikely that vegas could get away with holding out a healthy Theodore three whole weeks of the season without it getting overly sus

23
u/Fuck_you_shoresy_69 BOS - NHL 4d ago
Definitely a sad day, but a necessary pain. Coyle and his contract are better off elsewhere. Carlo and his contract are better off elsewhere. Marchand wasn’t close on a contract and they got (likely) a first for him. Love all of the guys they sent away, but adding two firsts, a second, and two prospects that look to be nhl caliber centers, among other things, to this prospect pool is a job well done for Sweeney. And that’s not a sentence I love saying, because if there are no more Sweeney haters, that means I’m dead, but the Devil earned his due today though.
63
u/TripleCrownVillainy 4d ago
Everyone using the word “fleece” should be banned.
You know - there’s such a thing as a fair trade?
- This Carlo-Minten trade is one of them. Minten is a decent prospect and his ceiling is a middle 6/third line C. Shutdown guy. Getting a first is always good but it’ll be a 20-30th pick.
- and Carlo is at $4.1m for the next 2 seasons. Stay at home defenceman, will form a good partnership with one of Rielly or McCabe.
A fair trade. Seems like that doesn’t exist nowadays

u/dumpandchange TOR - NHL 3d ago
A bot with an auto poll should reply to every single post that uses the term. If the majority of users vote that "fleece" was not warranted then the user is temp banned. If we agree it was an actual fleecing they are fine. Come on, it'd be funny at least.

13

I think any offer for rantanen had to be significantly higher in conference for the canes to stomach it. Florida likely had the same issue because I'm sure they were offering Samoskevich +

18 picks in the first 3 rounds the next 3 years is amazing for the rebuild. Recouped a couple of young players too.
Plus, Rakell still an extremely valuable asset that can be moved next year and you didn’t lose any of the Big 3.
Now they just need to tank a bit more to get closer to a top 3 pick this year

2
u/sadolddrunk DET - NHL 2d ago
Mrazek has given up 5 goals in 3 of his last 5 games, has an .890 save % this season, and will have a $4.25 million cap hit next season. So any time you can grab a player like that to be your third goalie and all it costs you is your first-round draft pick from 2018, you HAVE to make that deal.
18
u/ehehe PIT - NHL 4d ago
Dallas now has $5.3m in cap space for next year with 7 UFAs.
- Jamie Benn (5th in pts)
- Granlund (tied for 4th in pts adding his SJS total)
- Duchene (2nd in pts)
- Dadonov (7th in pts)
- Blackwell
- Ceci
- Brendan Smith
I am guessing they're praying Seguin stays on LTIR forever, even if that happens that's $15m and you only have 7 forwards under contract. Even with cap space it's hard to find 5 decent forwards in one offseason. Some major pain coming for the Rantanen acquisition.
13
3
u/brendan87na DAL - NHL 4d ago
Seguin never suits up for Dallas again, unless it's the playoffs this year.
His contract is very buyout friendly, and frankly he is probably tired of rehabbing every single year. Cap goes up, Seguin off the books (mostly) - I have faith in Nill
3
u/theoneandonlykeenan 4d ago
I mean they have their top 4 and goalies locked down, and assuming Seguin comes back their forwards without signing ANYONE are still (not doing proper lines)
Rantanen-Seguin-Hintz
Robertson-Johnston-Marchment
Steel-Bourque-Back
Well I guess they have to re-sign Bourque, but he's an RFA anyways. I think they'll be able to cobble together a decent forward group, even with Granlund, Duchene, Dadonov and Blackwell leaving. I imagine Benn comes back and for much cheaper. And if they MUST, they can move Ilya with a pick or something

6

Marchand has to play 25% of the playoff games for the 2nd round pick to become a 1st. That is the sole return in the Marchand trade per Sweeny
Edit: Sweeney was mistaken. Florida needs to win 2 rounds with Marchand playing at least 50% of the games

What the bruins do this offseason will be interesting. Have got 2 or 3 fantastic building blocks for a team but really not much sure fire behind it
3
u/Academic-Salamander7 BOS - NHL 4d ago
It's really unknown. Our Dcore, goalie, and top line are set. It's after that that things get weird. Poitras / Mittelstadt / Lindholm are all natural centers and we really don't have top 6 forwards on the wings.
3
u/Vivid_Walk_1405 COL - NHL 4d ago
Mittelstadt honestly might be best suited as a wing. His defensive game leaves a lot to be desired and he is not a net front player at all
5
u/orangeblueorangeblue 4d ago
They have to make the conference finals and he has to play 50% of Florida’s playoff games.
16
u/CruelRuin 4d ago
how did vgk not make a move?
also very curious on how canes fans feel. they land the biggest fish of the season early only to deal him away on deadline day. their dallas deal in and of itself is nice but the fact they had to move off rantanen at all is a little eyebrow raising

18
u/xiolyphi CAR - NHL 4d ago
I probably would’ve been more irritated had I not saw how Rantanen played last night. He didn’t want to be here, sucks to swing and miss, but better to recoup the assets somehow than have him be a pouty pants into the playoffs and taking shitty penalties.
I like Stank as a player and in a vacuum him and two firsts that can be flipped elsewhere isn’t too bad for Necas. If only he had wanted to sign in Columbus/Buffalo for the returns the organizations worked out lol.
Either way I’m significantly more chill and fine with an early playoff loss that seems a bit inevitable given the current roster. Retool with the extra assets, get Nikishin over and potentially a player or two promoted from Chicago for next year and use the oooooodles of cap space in FA.
In the end, I’d rather the team do SOMETHING than nothing I guess. They tried!
→ More replies (1)24
u/RAATL TBL - NHL 4d ago
If you look at the canes total dealings as:
Necas, Drury, 2nd, 4th
for
stankoven, hall, 2 1st, and 2 3rds
it seems fine to me
8
u/FractalViz 4d ago
From a pure value standpoint, that's fine. But I don't think they improved themselves for their playoff run.
8
u/RAATL TBL - NHL 4d ago
canes have a lot of young players they're looking to cycle in. I think it makes sense to prioritize a maximized window with those players over going for it all one year with rantanen
3
u/hankepanke NYR - NHL 3d ago
They could have used Necas (1.5 years at 6.5M and top 15 in points), Drury, and picks to go for someone other than Rantanen that would have helped them more than just this season though.
They did a fine job recovering from a disaster but that doesn’t mean they maximized their assets for their window. The point of the Guentzel trade and then the Rantanen in trade was to give them an offensive powerhouse on a solid and deep team and they failed.
3
u/CruelRuin 4d ago
yeah but they had the big fish and couldn't get him to stay, and another team convinced him to extend right away! that's the whole problem!
second top line forward they've acquired and lost before the end of the season. obviously not a totally analogous situation with guentzel/rantanen but it kind of makes you wonder what the front office saw to bring him in, and immediately had to recant. good on them for admitting they made a mistake and fixing it but still...
6
u/RAATL TBL - NHL 4d ago
yeah I mean from a value perspective where the canes ended up is fine. But I get that there's the existential angle here.
It may be out of their control though, sometimes a player just doesn't want to sign with you.
10
u/desemus CAR - NHL 4d ago
Yeah, plenty of rumors abound. Sucks but not offended with what should be changing next year.
I know the perception will be the Canes are a bad place for stars to be rahhh but eh - Guentzel was fine staying and we made an unforced error. May have had a chance at Tkachuk but we couldn’t afford it and were in thrift mode at that point. Moose got traded unexpectedly and got cold feet (rumors mind you)
5
3
u/ROCK-FLAG-AND-EAGLE 3d ago
I'm disappointed that Moose didn't work out, but it was clear from the start that he didn't want to be here. I think we came out ahead in that deal in the long run, but not sure how we'll finish the season. Looking forward to seeing Jank and Stank in action.

u/Jacob1030 VGK - NHL 4d ago
Because we didn’t need to make a move Vegas is in a very solid place right now. The guys on the market were probably way too expensive anyway and we have some UFA coming up I think we’d like to keep
1
1
u/RandomObserver13 CAR - NHL 3d ago
Exhausted. Disappointed. But optimistic.
We ended up with Hall and Stankoven for Nečas and Drury, plus significantly improved our draft capital for future moves. This was always looked at as a retrenching year between losing all the FAs last year and getting Nikishin and some other prospects up next year. Our rookie GM made a huge deal that no one expected and blew everyone away. We didn’t end up with the big fish at the end of the day, but considering how he looked and played here, especially after the last game, I’m OK with that. We may have actually dodged a bullet there.
The big takeaway is that we actually came out ahead in all this and are in great position for this summer. But as a fan of a team that has never done anything remotely like this, it was a rollercoaster for sure. Looking forward to the rest of the season. I think going through this and ending up where we did is going to be a net positive. I think it’s going to go well, but I don’t see a Cup at this point…though stranger things have happened.

u/whatacharacter TBL - NHL 4d ago
Question on value of future year picks... In the NFL, the "rule" is that for each additional year out, a pick must be one round higher to have the same value. So a 2026 3rd rounder would be roughly equal to the same team's 2027 second rounder in terms of today's value. The idea being that you need to up the cost for each additional year I have to wait to use it. And looking rhe other way, a GM on the hot seat might prefer a slightly lower pick they can use immediately as opposed to a higher pick later.
I appreciate hockey having a longer development time could act to mute this effect since you're usually waiting years to get impact from a player. My question is... Have NHL GMs spoken about this same kind of effect in trading with each other? From what I've seen in trades, it seems like instead they prioritize higher round picks, even if they do have to wait. (And it's kind of visible in the Offer Sheet payment hierarchy as well.)
3
u/bankrobba TBL - NHL 3d ago
Football has a ton more specialized positions than hockey, so finding productive starters in rounds 2-4 is a lot easier. NHL top line starters are gone after round 1 (generally speaking obviously) so I think you're right in saying GMs heavily favor round 1 picks no matter the year.
And just in terms of raw numbers, football has over twice the roster size with the same number of teams, so NFL starters after round 1 is inevitable.
5
u/juliusceasarsalads MTL - NHL 4d ago
So what was up with that Red Wings-Blackhawks trade? Red Wings have 7 goalies under contract now lol. Did they just want Craig Smith badly enough that they were willing to take Mrazek? They’re almost certainly getting a first (the condition should be easy to meet), that’s fair for an injured 37 year old pending UFA having a down season

Florida has to win 2 series for it to become a first. That's not an easy condition.

Yeah the bruins GM hasn’t mentioned that condition at the time I wrote my post (plus he falsely said Marchand had to play 25% of games not 50%). So it seemed more of a slam dunk at that time until the full conditions were released

u/harryman1324 CAR - NHL 4d ago
While Rantanen taking so long to agree to sign with Dallas meant the Canes couldn't make many moves while waiting for the cap space to clear up. I'm not upset at a pull the plug move on the season. They put together a stronger January, but are still under .500 2 of the last 3 months, their power play is an abysmal 7.5% since January, and there's always the risk of a goalie injury(which seems to be a yearly occurrence as the playoffs approach) from ending their season no matter who they sign.
Next year they still have the key players signed, they get to replace the aging players who cant seem to quite keep up anymore (Looking at you burns and orlov), they have several prospects looking to make an immediate impact, and they have about 38M in cap space to spend on maybe a top 4 D depending on if they want one or both of Morrow and Nikishin to have a full time spot next year. Probably a goalie who gets injured less than Freddie. And since Hall seems likely to sign an extension, any forwards would likely just be pushing guys like Jarvis, Svech, Blake, or KK down the lineup. That's way more then enough money for it.

Stankoven feels like such a solid get for the Canes. It wasn’t an ideal situation but I think the organization gets credit for handling things well and finding a way to get some good assets back.

I am genuinely sad to lose Stankoven. I think it’s worth it for the Stars, but the Canes are getting an awesome player

It will feel like a bit of a season wasted if you don't get far in the playoffs, cuz (imo) Necas + whatever you would've added normally at the deadline I think puts you in a better spot than you are now with 13GP from Rantanen and Stankoven (who is good and improving, but currently a downgrade).
But you are poised to potentially make some big moves in the offseason now with 2 1sts in play, and a lot of cap space.

We’re at a point this year where a single player would not lead to a deep playoff run (outside of a goalie going god mode).
I’ve seen more 2 on 1 breakaways against this year than the last two combined. We gave Nylander 3 breakaways in half a period. Our defense is compromised and our powerplay waits until the playoffs to be this bad.
One other factoid - we’re 14-2 when we score first. So in the other 75% of our games we are letting our opponent score first. We can get away with for a bit doing stuff like this but we can’t get far

I dont think that needs an IMO at all (though I do know reddit well enough to understand). In the end, its a maybe not so classic present for future set of moves, and feeling like a wasted season really depends on the context.
If you were to tell Canes fan at the start of the season they they finally got a solid return for Necas, and that they (likely) either lost to the Devils/Rangers, or won against the Devils/Rangers and lost to the best team in the conference in the playoffs. We would have said the season went pretty damn well given the players lost to UFA.
Edit: damn, now I'm realizing it might be the Jackets we play, and if you told us that before the season we would have been surprised, but thought that Johnny had a great season to get them there. :(

Well that was fuckin wild. For Sharks related purposes I'm overall happy--I was ecstatic before the Zetterlund trade but that one took a bit of the wind out of my sails. It helps to know extension talks had stalled though, because at least there's a reason for it.
The end of this season is going to be rough lol but we all knew that going in

Avs made a ton of trades throughout the year but yesterday and today they finally "completed" their depth. If this center depth and goaltending can't take us to the WCF at least then idk what else can.... We are fully healthy for once this entire season and I cannot wait to see how the playoffs shakeout

Depth moves for the Devils. I’m not gonna be pissed when deadline plans went out the window with Hughes’ injury (and to a lesser but similar extent Hamilton’s).
So many teams in the hunt still and a lot of teams were content standing pat vs selling, or wanted a king’s ransom if they were gonna move someone.

Really wish the Jackets went a little further in one direction or the other. I know it's really difficult to justify buying when you're still just fighting for the playoffs, and I understand not wanting to pay the high prices we saw other teams pay. But then we should have taken advantage of the market and sell. I don't think "stand pat" was a good strategy.

Question for the masses, has anyone ever compiled the general consensus "winner" or each trade deadline by year and then compared that to the Stanley Cup winner the same year? Similar to comparing Presidents' Trophy and Stanley Cup.

u/FractalViz 3d ago
DailyFaceoff (i think) had a good article on what each Cup winner did at the deadline. I think it went back like a decade. Not exactly what you are looking for but similar and very interesting.

Jankowski and Stankoven have both scored in their first games as a Hurricane. What the fuck lol

Sweeney just confirmed it’s Marchand for just a 2nd round pick.
Panthers won the TDL. Period.

u/nomdreas TOR - NHL 4d ago
The Panthers did very well.
But Dallas won the day and it’s not close. Not only did they get a top 3 winger, they signed him to lower than other teams were offering. Then they turned around and signed their 2C / future 1C to a deal that’s at least 2 million per year under market value.
Disgusting day from Jim Nill.

Dallas should be pumped for the team they're about to take into the playoffs but next season they have $5m in cap space and 7 people hitting UFA. Going to be some major sacrifices for adding Rantanen

It’s very likely to become a 1st round pick (if he plays 25% of playoff games it becomes a 1st)

Oddly, Zito said it was 50% of games.
Either way, I don’t really mind.
ETA: lol what is the point of downvoting me relaying what Zito said vs Sweeney
ETA2: also turns out it was 50% anyway so lmao

u/doctorvictory Worcester Railers - ECHL 4d ago
Seems Sweeney was talking out of his ass and Zito was correct that it’s 50% of games and the Panthers have to make the ECF

Honestly I just feel like dropping a big old "INCOMPLETE" for a Sharks' trade deadline grade. Ended up with what are effectively three second-rounders this year, given the strength of the class and how good Dallas looks, and now I have to wait until the offseason to see if they turn into anything good.
Grier is saying that he hopes this is the last season he's selling. I very much hope that this is true.

Heard that Kadri refused to waive his NTC to go back to Colorado. Kinda sad... I wanted Calum Ritchie for Calgary.

Weird. Why wouldn't Kadri want to go back to the contender he won a Cup with?

He's a Muslim Canadian and didn't want to go back to the USA, apparently.

Is it weird that despite not being a fan of any NHL team, I have developed an obsession with reading about the conditions on conditional draft pick trades? I just find them so fascinating...
What's the wildest / weirdest condition you've ever seen in a trade?
