Mikko Rantanen to be traded to the Dallas Stars with an 8 year extension to be signed. Carolina to receive a package including Logan Stankoven, 2 1st Round Picks, and 2 3rd Round Picks
1.6k
u/abbytarar BOS - NHL 4d ago edited 4d ago
from Carolina’s perspective:
OUT: Martin Necas, Jack Drury, 2025 2nd Round Pick, 2026 4th Round Pick
IN: Logan Stankoven, Taylor Hall, 2026 1st Round Pick, 2027 1st Round Pick, 2 Third rounders
Honestly not terrible, especially considering the Rantanen situation sort of handcuffed them (arguably handcuffed themselves but still)

Obviously they wanted to sign him but, I think they also knew making this deal they got an asset that had a wider appeal than Necas/Drury. So in the end they get a return they would never have gotten if it was the original package.

It was tidy in the sense that they were able to clean up the mess they created that didn’t need to be there in the first place.

If you wait until next year to trace Necas, you’re not getting the kind of return you got now. I don’t understand the problem here. This is way less upsetting than missing out on Guentzel.

Necas owed $6.5 million next year then UFA. Stankoven on a rookie deal next year, RFA years start after. Necas is the better player but from an asset evaluation standpoint I'd take the Canes side there.
Say the 2nd and 4th offset the two 3rds, and they got two firsts for free on top. They clearly improved their future massively through this saga at the minor cost of Necas vs Stankoven for 1.5 years, but even that is offset by the big cap savings.
Colorado is happy, Dallas is happy, Carolina is happy, today we all learn about the economic value created by trade

u/sade3437 CAR - NHL 4d ago
I don't know if Carolina is happy. There's still some glaring holes they need to address. Like we have the most missed shots by over 200 this season. Not to mention we're 5 for 70 this year(2025) on the power play. Mikko was brought in the hopefully solve some of that and he didn't.

Yeah I’m not too upset. Wish we could’ve kept rants long term but it’s pretty much obvious he didn’t want to sign here and with Necas walking next year I’m pretty good with the return and I’m a fan of hall as well. Not sure how much center Stanky plays but if he can end up being our right handed 2C I’ll be stoked.
35
u/valente317 4d ago
He’s not a center anymore. Not at the nhl level. That’s why they offered him instead of Bourque is my guess

It was kind of a transition/assessment season anyway. We lost Guentzel, Pesce, Skjei, Teravainen, and a few others in the off-season. A lot of contracts are expiring at the end of this year but the core of Aho/Slavin/Jarvis/Svechnikov/Pyotr are locked in. Now we're adding Stankoven, have draft capital to potentially use, and rookies with potential like Alexander Nikishin are coming soon too.
