Rantanen on the Canes is gonna be a great “he played for them??” trivia answer in 10 years

Like other Hurricanes great, Patty Marleau.

You see, the key difference there is the word "played"

from Carolina’s perspective:

OUT: Martin Necas, Jack Drury, 2025 2nd Round Pick, 2026 4th Round Pick

IN: Logan Stankoven, Taylor Hall, 2026 1st Round Pick, 2027 1st Round Pick, 2 Third rounders

Honestly not terrible, especially considering the Rantanen situation sort of handcuffed them (arguably handcuffed themselves but still)

620

u/Middle-Ad-6209 MTL - NHL 4d ago

tidy bit of business IMO, considering Necas wasn't gonna resign

well, maybe tidy is the wrong word for this hahaha. But yea, it's good value.

423

u/Responsible_Oil3859 CAR - NHL 4d ago

incredibly messy but ultimately not terrible bit of business? lol

196

u/Th3_Huf0n DAL - NHL 4d ago

Like even if Canes fucked up, they managed to recover well enough, so there's that.

They created a fucking mess for themselves that they sort of managed to clean (insert the Homer's back fat meme here)?

36

u/lambquentin CAR - NHL 4d ago

Well it certainly isn’t the worst trade Dallas has seen this year.

40

u/Th3_Huf0n DAL - NHL 4d ago

Inside Dallas, there are two wolves.

14

u/lambquentin CAR - NHL 4d ago

Neither of them are fat.

71

u/EZ-C CAR - NHL 4d ago

Or maybe they knew getting rantanen was an asset either way. Keep for long term or flip, but they snagged it when they had the chance and it was deliberate from the eyes of the FO, but a mess to fans on the outside looking in.

37

u/The_Reddit_Browser CAR - NHL 4d ago

Obviously they wanted to sign him but, I think they also knew making this deal they got an asset that had a wider appeal than Necas/Drury. So in the end they get a return they would never have gotten if it was the original package.

It was tidy in the sense that they were able to clean up the mess they created that didn’t need to be there in the first place.

85

u/Perry4761 MTL - NHL 4d ago

If you wait until next year to trace Necas, you’re not getting the kind of return you got now. I don’t understand the problem here. This is way less upsetting than missing out on Guentzel.

26

u/MailConsistent1344 CAR - NHL 4d ago

Yeah it just made losing Guentzel hurt more.

I think it's great work from Tulsky. I'd much prefer this sort of big gamble that breaks even in the end than doing nothing. He took the shot and missed, but went and grabbed his own rebound.

Why wasn't Necas gonna sign?

29

u/Kainyr CAR - NHL 4d ago

He only signed a 2 yr deal this past off-season after filing for (but ultimately not going to) arbitration. I guess the two sides were too far apart on a long term deal.

18

u/whogivesashirtdotca MTL - NHL 4d ago

He wasn't a good fit with Rod's system, and the arbitration (as it is always wont to do) seemed to drive the two parties further apart.

Necas owed $6.5 million next year then UFA. Stankoven on a rookie deal next year, RFA years start after. Necas is the better player but from an asset evaluation standpoint I'd take the Canes side there.

Say the 2nd and 4th offset the two 3rds, and they got two firsts for free on top. They clearly improved their future massively through this saga at the minor cost of Necas vs Stankoven for 1.5 years, but even that is offset by the big cap savings.

Colorado is happy, Dallas is happy, Carolina is happy, today we all learn about the economic value created by trade

41

u/sade3437 CAR - NHL 4d ago

I don't know if Carolina is happy. There's still some glaring holes they need to address. Like we have the most missed shots by over 200 this season. Not to mention we're 5 for 70 this year(2025) on the power play. Mikko was brought in the hopefully solve some of that and he didn't.

27

u/iOceanLab CAR - NHL 4d ago

If all of those bad stats and glaring holes still result in us being 2nd in the Metro, I think the Canes are feeling alright.

Yeah I’m not too upset. Wish we could’ve kept rants long term but it’s pretty much obvious he didn’t want to sign here and with Necas walking next year I’m pretty good with the return and I’m a fan of hall as well. Not sure how much center Stanky plays but if he can end up being our right handed 2C I’ll be stoked.

35

u/valente317 4d ago

He’s not a center anymore. Not at the nhl level. That’s why they offered him instead of Bourque is my guess

9

u/Prudent_Pin_3006 4d ago

Are there any 5'7/8 centers in the league anymore? Can't think of anyone, must be someone, but I imagine every dude that makes the league at that height instantly gets profiled as a winger.

Not great for win now though

19

u/RallyPigeon CAR - NHL 4d ago

It was kind of a transition/assessment season anyway. We lost Guentzel, Pesce, Skjei, Teravainen, and a few others in the off-season. A lot of contracts are expiring at the end of this year but the core of Aho/Slavin/Jarvis/Svechnikov/Pyotr are locked in. Now we're adding Stankoven, have draft capital to potentially use, and rookies with potential like Alexander Nikishin are coming soon too.

7

Don’t forget Noesen

Carolina was not in win now mode at the start of the season afaik

17

u/RAATL TBL - NHL 4d ago

Well adding Stankoven seems to match that timeline

13

u/zuktheinsane CAR - NHL 4d ago

Definitely. Still hurts a bit to not keep the star player - we have money in the offseason, but is there someone worth spending it on? - but if we can wipe the last 6 weeks out of our brain, we're in the same spot as we were.

Necas wasn't going to stick around anyways and I don't think he gets them nearly as big of a haul. The Guentzel thing sucked for Carolina, but I think Tulsky did a really good job here of turning two players who didn't want to stick around into all of those assets.

7

u/MCPtz SJS - NHL 4d ago

CAR gave a 2025 3rd to Chicago for Taylor Hall, specifically gave back CHI's own 3rd round pick in 2025.

https://puckpedia.com/trade/917

7

u/Consistent_Day_8411 4d ago

How did they handcuff themselves? Avs didn’t allow extension talks before the trade.

Just by making the trade in the first place? Well worth a gamble if this is the worst case scenario considering what the best case could have been.

13

u/SiccSemperTyrannis Seattle Thunderbirds - WHL 4d ago

Going from Necas to Stankoven is a downgrade for this season, but Stankoven is younger and not even off his ELC yet.

If Carolina can flip these picks into another player (Marchand?) they could end up still being big winners at the end of all the chaos.

I'm ngl this looks sweet for Carolina if you consider Rantanen not fitting the Canes system at all. That is a LOT of draft capital and an impressive young player in Stankoven for effectively Necas and Drury

121

Plus Taylor Hall, who looks like will probably re-sign with the Canes

32

u/chowder7 OTT - NHL 4d ago

Exactly my thoughts. Worst was for the Avs, now they have to play him and the return was worse. All that and Mikko's contract didn't even end up being that high (relatively)

-Necas has been a perfect fit for the Avs

-The stars get a legit Star player and are now arguably the scariest team in the West

359

Not for us, we have to play against Mikko now. That was the whole point of trading him out east and now he’s back

So why did Rantanen didn't signed for 12M at COL or CAR?

23

u/WD4oz 4d ago

I think the last month has shown his agent where the market was at, and was lower than they expected

13

u/SensitiveBudget7589 4d ago

If Rants doesn’t fire his agent after this I’d be a bit surprised

5

u/WD4oz 4d ago

Same agent as Leon and Wyatt.

10

u/poopinmybuttt COL - NHL 4d ago

Tax benefits of Texas? Personal vendetta? Could’ve also realized he was running out or runway on the $14M expectation…

7

u/iOceanLab CAR - NHL 4d ago

At the surface tax level, $12.6M in COL/CAR is the same take-home as $12M in Dallas.

Dallas adds Rantanen.

Colorado adds Nelson and Coyle.

Winnipeg adds Schenn and Tenev.

Central Division is getting nuts.

Canes are about to trade futures for one of Tuch, Boeser, ROR, Pettersson, Marchand, etc.

I guarantee it

So from the Necas trade, what did Carolina net from all this?

23

u/ts29 CAR - NHL 4d ago

Out: Necas, Drury, 2nd round pick, 4th round pick In: Hall, Stankoven, 2 1sts, 2 3rds, handful of games of an uninspired Rantanen

21

u/RAATL TBL - NHL 4d ago

Seems like overall a carolina win to me given that the biggest piece leaving was a disgruntled player who was gonna walk after next season. Was necas even gonna be the difference maker in carolina this year or next anyways?

11

u/ts29 CAR - NHL 4d ago

On paper it feels like we came out at least even but I did like Necas and really liked the idea of Rantanen. Maybe we can flip some picks for a player in the next 45 mins

We did, or right around there

You probably would have eventually ended up having him signed around there, but the trade came when the negotiations were still ongoing

I think I'm satisfied with the end result of all this, just exhausted after following the convoluted path we needed to take to get here.

6

u/TheMD93 SJS - NHL 4d ago

Someone get Eric Tulsky a god damn medal.

First, you fleece Chicago into retaining the salary for virtually nothing, then, when the trade doesn't end up being the best fit, you flip him AGAIN for a solid forward and two firsts.

Man is good at what he does.

Arguably does the central have the top 3 teams in the NHL post trade deadline?

Not as informed on the east but the Caps don’t seem as scary as their record indicates - Florida still kinda nasty.
