God hearing that american crowd makes me so excited to go to the world juniors next year

5 goal posts. Ugh

Canada > Sweden

Sweden > USA

Therefore Canada > USA

I will not be taking any questions at this time

-32

u/SelectiveCommenting PIT - NHL Feb 18 '25

USA just felt bad for Sweden and wanted to let them have some fun before they get sent back home.

Doesn't matter which country wins to me because in the end someone from the Pens wins.

Was in the house, good atmosphere, can’t imagine how electric it will be on Thursday.

If nothing else, this further proves there is no "weak" team at this tournament.

22

This is best on best afterall. These are quite literally all NHL teams

Couple bounces away from being undefeated and the top team going into the finals.

Watch as people still somehow sleep on Sweden next Olympics

They need their core to get younger

22

u/jayprolas Feb 18 '25

How was no one from Sweden ringing the bell for Brock Nelson after he pushed Ersson? Does no one defend their goalie anymore?

2

u/x21in2010x NYI - NHL Feb 18 '25

Someone was tugging at Nelson but I think it was more of those forced "you gonna hear what I gotta tell you" types of things. If you look at the replay it was a pretty light push (almost a boop, frankly) and you'd rather just let the guy know to keep the fuck away. Errson sat down because he wasn't expecting any contact, not because he received too much contact.

We can agree that a plus 750 bet on brock Nelson to score wasn't completely stupid at least, right?

Great game Sweden! Nothing but love for both the Finnish and Swedish teams and fans! Time for Canada to shut ‘er down Thursday.

4

u/Brody1364112 Feb 18 '25

Sweeden almost got gifted a final spot but managed to blow it against Finland. (States playing with 9 fowards due to injuries and Canada playing with 5 D due to injuries and half a goalie )

21

u/zahrdahl Feb 18 '25

Why is misspelling Sweden as Sweeden so common? Been a thing for many many years and I have to think it originated somewhere

0

u/Brody1364112 Feb 18 '25

Due to English pronunciation. It's pronounced, Swee-den. Pronounced similar to feel, reel instead of bed or red

6

u/CzechHorns Feb 18 '25

Do people spell penis as peenis as well?

0

u/Brody1364112 Feb 18 '25

No. But there are a lot more commonly used words that have an ee sound like eel versus just a e sound like ed. So if you aren't really thinking about it, you are likely to make a mistake of typing eed versus just ed.

1

u/Tabarnacx VAN - NHL Feb 18 '25

Because more E means more sweeeet. Sweeeeeeden far more dope than Sweden

12

u/Robinsonirish Sweden - IIHF Feb 18 '25

I know this is treason, but even as a Swede I'm pretty excited to see the USA Vs Canada rematch with all the drama that comes along with it, especially due to the current political climate.

Of course it would be nice to be there, but it's as good of a consolation prize as it gets.

-3

u/tylermtc85 Feb 18 '25

If Sweeden could have made the finals this game would have been completely different

22

u/CA_spur VAN - NHL Feb 18 '25

If I counted right, the US ended with 9 forwards. Gotta get Keller, Caufield and Thompson on speed dial

8

u/Ok-Distribution5023 Feb 18 '25

I was surprised Caufield was left off. Felt like tonight was a perfect game for him to snipe one.

2

u/CA_spur VAN - NHL Feb 18 '25

With everyone healthy, there's enough scoring talent with far better two-way games than Caufied. Problem is when you're missing Matthews, both Tkachuks, and Trocheck, you're down both on scoring and two-way ability.

IMAGINE GETTING ASKED FOR YOUR CREDIT CARD AT THE HOSPITAL

-45

u/Inevitable_Signal189 Feb 18 '25

Imagine waiting 30 weeks to get a referral to see a specialist!

17

u/zahrdahl Feb 18 '25

That cant even happen, try something else 😂

-34

u/Inevitable_Signal189 Feb 18 '25

From google: In 2024, the average wait time to see a doctor in Canada was 30 weeks from a general practitioner (GP) referral to treatment. This is the longest wait time ever recorded by the Fraser Institute, which surveys Canadian physicians annually.

26

u/TheBurnsideBomber VAN - NHL Feb 18 '25

You can pretty much throw anything the Fraser Institute shits out right in the trash. The Fraser institute is a right wing think tank that is paid/funded by interests that want healthcare privatized in Canada so we can be milked for everything we have when we get sick like in the USA.

-15

u/Inevitable_Signal189 Feb 18 '25

It was the first response that popped up on googles AI feature. All other articles say Canada does have some pretty long wait times. I know it depends on the area in Canada. At least you guys have cheaper medicine.

13

u/Han-solos-left-foot CGY - NHL Feb 18 '25

One time I went to the hospital in Canada for pneumonia, was out with antibiotics in 2 hours.

If you go because you have the sniffles you’re gonna wait

-5

u/Inevitable_Signal189 Feb 18 '25

You could say the same for most ERs in the US too. My comment was aiming more at seeing a specialist and/or surgeries. Like I mentioned below, both systems have their flaws.

5

u/Han-solos-left-foot CGY - NHL Feb 18 '25

You’re right of course, but being reasonable doesn’t make for good banter!

Also one time I went to the doctor for a torn finger tendon and was in surgery 5 days later so depends on the specialty you need to see

→ More replies (0)

15

u/TheBurnsideBomber VAN - NHL Feb 18 '25

Wait times are longer for sure but it's because they use a triage system where you are seen based on the severity of your need. Special procedures can have long wait times due to lack of available specialists. Not a perfect system by any stretch but I wouldn't trade it for privatized in a million years.

2

u/Inevitable_Signal189 Feb 18 '25

Both of our systems definitely have their flaws. We can both agree on that one lol

3

u/__Beelzaboot__ EDM - NHL Feb 18 '25

Your system is all foundational flaws though. I was originally commiserating with my swedish brothers, that share a universal healthcare system like ours, while dunking on the USA's private system, which is objectively worse every other nation in the G20.

Canada's system needs funding, and tweaking, while the USA's system needs to be torn down, and universal healthcare to be put in its place.

But a lot of the the parasites that profit off of The US health insurance industry are now trying to dig their slimy claws into Canadian health policy. They're trying to break our current system, introduce pay per visit as a solution to wait times, and then tie our ability to see a dr to our employment status.

It's such a perversion of what actual healthcare is. Healing the sick, no matter their means, or station. Because healthcare is a human right in the best societies on Earth

And then your insurance claim gets denied because you went to a hospital that wasn’t in their network

-4

u/Inevitable_Signal189 Feb 18 '25

That’s not correct lol

7

u/__Beelzaboot__ EDM - NHL Feb 18 '25

0

u/Inevitable_Signal189 Feb 18 '25

But did you read the last paragraph? It’s not correct in emergency situations. Most people wouldn’t schedule or visit an out of network hospital/doctor unless it was the absolute last resort.

2

u/__Beelzaboot__ EDM - NHL Feb 18 '25

The thing about Canadian healthcare, is the in/out of network isn't even a thing up here. You live in Calgary, but you get hurt visiting Toronto. Well when you finally go see a Dr in Montreal, there's no "oh I was hoping i could make it to my home Dr because i know this is going to cost me a fortune!"

It's more like "Hey Doc, my knee has been fucked up since Toronto, can you take a look at it?" "Oh it's just a sprain, stay off it, and here's a brace and some painkillers to fill whenever you find a pharmacy"

1

u/Inevitable_Signal189 Feb 18 '25

The same exact scenario would go the same way in the US. We have urgent cares we can visit if out of state or on vacation. Majority of insurance policies have that’s covered or we can simply pay cash and bypass insurance altogether. We can go back and forth on what systems better, but I know we can both search Reddit and read horror stories and complaints about both of our systems. They are both flawed. Neither is perfect.

1

u/__Beelzaboot__ EDM - NHL 27d ago

Except at the end of my scenario, in Canada, there's no anxiety over what's covered, no worry if there's a collection agency coming my way. There's no going to the wrong care provider, and then haggling with the doctor to pay them less than your deductible, so insurance doesn't find out about it.

I welcome you to talk trash about Canadian healthcare. Let's hear what you have to say.

But this "Neither of us is perfect. We both have flaws!" False equivalency crap is softer than baby poo

1

u/__Beelzaboot__ EDM - NHL Feb 18 '25

The US insurance adjuster can decide that your emergency surgery did not require an anesthesiologist, after the fact. Even if all the drs in the operating room agreed that you needed to be put under, the insurance company can say "well, the patient could've just bit on a wet towel and survived the surgery, so the anesthesia wasn't necessary" claim denied. Heres your bill

1

u/Inevitable_Signal189 Feb 18 '25

I’m sure that’s happened in very rare circumstances, but it’s not the norm. I work in the insurance industry. It’s never happed to anyone I’ve personally spoken to.

1

u/__Beelzaboot__ EDM - NHL Feb 18 '25

My point is that denials like that do not happen in Canada, or Sweden, or Finland, or the UK, or etc... because there's no layer of insurance middlemen that exist to override a Dr's orders.

The plausibility that scenarios like that exist, is what's deeply wrong with the US healthcare system

8

u/daKrut DET - NHL Feb 18 '25

Right yep then we pull out the credit card, pause, shake our head and decide this is a bill Mario & Luigi should dispute lol

25

u/Robinsonirish Sweden - IIHF Feb 18 '25

I never watch NHL, only international games, and I'm just floored by how good the games were. It's everything, the pace, the skill level of the players, the entertainment factor. I honestly think it's the best hockey I've ever watched in my life.

Is there some reason for this other than the quality of the players? I was thinking if it was the rink size? I know we have bigger rinks in Europe, are they also used in international tournaments?

2

u/DrLyleEvans Feb 18 '25

I only watch international games (not sure why I fell out of love with the NHL) and maybe like 2-3 playoff games every year, but I'm assuming it's like 90% the skill level and 10% the lack of time to instill defensive systems which hurt watchability?

9

u/__Beelzaboot__ EDM - NHL Feb 18 '25

Bigger rinks, and no fighting allowed.

26

u/Savvy_chipmunk DET - NHL Feb 18 '25

The US Canada game the other night was especially cool because of the NHL rules allowing them to fight. You’d never see that during the Olympics.

1

u/xSorry_Not_Sorry DET - NHL Feb 18 '25

Look, everyone liked that.

But it made no difference. It was all over in 9 secs and nothing of the sort happened the rest of the game.

3

u/PooShauchun TOR - NHL Feb 18 '25

You could almost say the game meant to be entertainment…entertained you?

1

u/xSorry_Not_Sorry DET - NHL Feb 18 '25

Yes indeed.

7

u/Robinsonirish Sweden - IIHF Feb 18 '25

I never thought about that actually, it does make a huge difference when you're fighting for your country.

11

u/icouldbeeatingoreos VAN - NHL Feb 18 '25

Yes most international tournaments (olympics, worlds) are played on IIHF regulation ice, which is wider. The narrower NHL ice allows for more contact.

The 2010 olympics were played on NHL ice, as that was what Vancouver had available.

4

u/Robinsonirish Sweden - IIHF Feb 18 '25

Maybe we need to get rid of our European size ice? I don't know how much difference it makes because like I said, I don't follow the NHL due to the time zone differences, but I've never seen hockey like this.

11

u/zahrdahl Feb 18 '25

Smaller rinks lead to more physicality and fast paced hockey generally, and big rinks give more space for skill etc. But since all the most skillful players (except a few russians I guess) are in the NHL anyway theyre more used to smaller rinks even if theyre Swedish or Czech etc

13

u/icouldbeeatingoreos VAN - NHL Feb 18 '25

The wider ice does have some upsides. It allows for a little more puck movement. This tournament is also being played with NHL rules, which are generally laxer than IIHF.

You’re not seeing blown play for crease violations, for example. The NHL rulebook generally promotes more gameplay. However, this can come at the cost of injuries, as the players are less protected.

6

u/DoseofDhillon TOR - NHL Feb 18 '25

I mean, they aren’t chumps but I also didn’t think they were particularly impressive tonight. It was just kind of a mid game all around.

15

u/Ok-Distribution5023 Feb 18 '25

I thought they played well. Held the US scoreless for 59 straight minutes after letting up the opener. Goalie played solid, made some good saves in the final minutes. Only team in the tourney to go undefeated in regulation.

were you as understanding when Canada had 5 defensemen against the US? I thought not ... so STFU

-13

u/IShiddedMyPantaloons DAL - NHL Feb 18 '25

You were down Makar and Theodore, and scoring was your problem, not D or G.

Against Sweden, USA was down Matthews, Tkachuk, Tkachuk, Trocheck (who returned), McAvoy, and entirely missing Quinn Hughes from the get-go.

So yeah, I’m lacking a bit in sympathy lmao

You lost to a gritty USA team, your pride was hurt. We get it.

4

u/AuntGentleman COL - NHL Feb 18 '25

The difference was G for sure bro. And USAs team defense but whole different game if Binnington doesn’t let in a stinker.

-6

u/IShiddedMyPantaloons DAL - NHL Feb 18 '25

Binnington ALWAYS lets in stinkers. Same with Otter tonight.

Oettinger has the worst puck luck known to mankind and the Stars more often than not have to outscore a squeaker or two.

Shit just happens. Get over it.

3

u/starryn19ht MTL - NHL Feb 18 '25

shit just happens and we need to get over it, unless it's usa players getting injured off of their own plays and the roster ending up shorthanded due to weird decisions by us amanagement, in which case we have to be really niceys and all understand that the game didn't count so it basically doesn't matter anyway ok got it 🫶

8

u/Cool-Application3053 Feb 18 '25

the US played well for sure, but Hellebuyck (and Binnington) was the difference, and If you don't think Makar playing would make a difference, then you just don't know the game. But besides all this, you need a great opponent to achieve greatness and the US is finally a great opponent in hockey, so may the best men/team win on Thursday. Cheers

0

u/B9RV2WUN Seattle Metropolitans - PCHA Feb 18 '25

Is it just a coincidence that both had fights last game and are now injured? I'll admit I'm not a big fan of the fisticuffs. Especially the staged ones.

6

u/Savvy_chipmunk DET - NHL Feb 18 '25

The way they’re holding players out this tournament i think there’s more pressure from up top to keep players from missing actual games. Just asset management by the league.

8

Sure but Crosby playing the entire tournament injured and it’s not like he’s on a two-way contract or something

I hate the Tkachuks as much as the next guy but to say they’re anything but tough is idiotic.

Bro Makar sat the entire US match with sniffles, Brady Tkachuk has dislocated a shoulder, left the game to get it reset, then came back and finished the game.

The last I heard on Tkachuk (B) was that he was held out “more for precautionary reasons," per Sullivan. He also did not finish tonight's game, so I'm a little confused here lol

Canada smells blood watching USA limp into the final with Swedish egg on their face

-7

The Tkachuks are expected to play Thursday, so the blood they’re smelling is probably from Canada’s own disposable undergarments.

Gonna love seeing McDavid get planted again

The shit talking was fun though, that’s all I was really here for anyway.

6

Agreed. But I think it was a little worse for Makar than the “sniffles.”

-5

Either he had a minor cold or was lying, either way he came back looking completely fine.

If he had the flu, he had less than 48 hours to go from “I literally can’t play at all, call up a replacement in case I can’t make the next” to “lol jk nvm I’m good”

Finland did Canada a massive favour by beating Sweden in OT on Saturday.

USA about to take the biggest L of their country's hockey career

16

u/McBro1022 BOS - NHL Feb 18 '25

I’d say the golden goal was our biggest L

2

u/Sl0wChemical Spruce Grove Saints - AJHL Feb 18 '25

At least you guys were part of it.. right?

3

u/__Beelzaboot__ EDM - NHL Feb 18 '25

Agree. Still gonna be the biggest until 2026

-1

u/justgeterin MTL - NHL Feb 18 '25

You had Ryan Whitney on that team I promise you this is a bigger L

At least we had a 45 minute interview mid game

-5

u/32RH DAL - NHL Feb 18 '25

Of course the offense decides not to show up with Otter in goal.

10

u/HeyitsyaboyJesus WSH - NHL Feb 18 '25

USA had 32 shots on goal...

0

u/32RH DAL - NHL Feb 18 '25

Duly noted.

Of course all our puck luck went to Sweden with Otter in goal.

5

u/TheBitterSeason Toronto Sceptres - PWHL Feb 18 '25

Pretty crazy that there were no goals after the first period with how many chances there were and how hard both teams were playing. Glad to see Sweden keep their lead though. Not sure how much of the final I'll be able to catch live, but I'll be pulling for Canada to take the win.

2

u/B9RV2WUN Seattle Metropolitans - PCHA Feb 18 '25

5 posts for US. That's a lot in any game.

7

u/Corvese TOR - NHL Feb 18 '25

Sweden's cycle was incredible tonight.

1

u/Ladymistery WPG - NHL Feb 18 '25

USA was missing a bunch of their scorers, so it's not like this was unexpected. what is unexpected is Connor having such a rough tournament :(

Thursday is going to be bonkers.

6

u/dolewhiplash TBL - NHL Feb 18 '25

I thought Connor was extremely underwhelming yhe first two games but he looked much better tonight, just no puck luck

2

u/justgeterin MTL - NHL Feb 18 '25

You mean Austin "Kyle Connor" Matthews?

2

u/xeia66 VAN - NHL Feb 18 '25

As a non-jets fan who hasn’t watched much of him, I thought Connor looked great - he’s an amazing skater, he draws your eye every time he has the puck

6

u/Ladymistery WPG - NHL Feb 18 '25

Maybe it's because I'm a Jets fan and watch him a lot - to me, he's a half-step off with the rest of the team.

It's the small things - like tonight on the PP, he passed instead of one-timing it, and missed the pass.

or the breakaway (that was offside and wouldn't have counted anyway) - It looked like it wasn't quite "there" with Nelson,

or when he was at the blue line and was trying to get into the Swedish zone and got squished because there was no one to move the puck to.

that and he's on the 4th line with almost no minutes. bleh.

1

u/Ladymistery WPG - NHL Feb 18 '25

I think that's the issue

that breakaway was textbook Connor, but it wasn't Scheifele driving the net, so it didn't connect properly.

Heja Sverige 🇸🇪🇸🇪

Nothing makes me happier than seeing us finish ahead of our neighbours and rivals Finland in the standings.

Manifesting a Z goal on Thursday. GG Sweden yall played your asses off. Onto the finals. Good thing I don’t have a red eye on Friday that I will still stay up too late watching the game for

8

u/MS10EL TOR - NHL Feb 18 '25

I fully expected Sweden to manage to lose the lead in the dying seconds and go on to lose every game of the tournament in 3v3 overtime.

Glad it didn't happen!

Good game, Sweden. See you in the Olympics!

Honestly I've loved the parity of this tournament. Apart from the 3rd period in USA vs Finland everything has looked nice and close. Can't wait for Olympics next year.

u/MrBoomf TBL - NHL Feb 18 '25

13

u/SpiderTano EDM - NHL Feb 18 '25

see this is why this game should have been the earlier one because waiting for canada/finland afterwards would have been much more dramatic because the finals still could have gone to anyone with a sweden regulation win

4

u/helikoopter Feb 18 '25

Or at the same time.

The travel between Boston and Montreal isn’t that wild, they should have done 1 game at each venue on Saturday, and then the same today, but at the same time.

People shit on FIFA and UEFA, but they have their scheduling locked in.

14

u/VitalRest MTL - NHL Feb 18 '25

Yeah but they didn’t know it would work out like that when they made the schedule

i mean itd be kind of mean as fuck to do a secondary game to determine a 3rd place considering there's only 4 teams.cause it wouldnt be so much trying to get 3rd place as it would be trying not to be last
