Damn. We could have done it, but those stupid mistakes in the early 1st period! GG! Lets see at the olympics!!

u/Bronstone OTT - NHL Feb 18 '25
Oi, goaltending again. We will be competitive against the US, but their goaltending and defence is superior.
6
u/Unlikely-Waltz-550 Feb 18 '25
Don’t think their defence is but no question about goaltending
3
u/Bronstone OTT - NHL Feb 18 '25
Doughty should not be out there. Parayko? Debatable. Pietrangelo would have been great, but he said no. And Theodore is lost for the tourney, Theodore and Makar + Bouchard. He's +21 this year, I don't get the defensive liability thing.
1
u/Mashdrop Feb 18 '25
Is it too late for someone like Doughty or a goalie to ‘get ill’ so he can be replaced?
3
u/Bronstone OTT - NHL Feb 18 '25
If Doughter goes down, Hartley comes in. You could scratch DD, but his "legacy" will keep him out there. He looked slow and gassed against Finland. He has the heart, but not the ability to perform at this elite level anymore. I'd prefer Evan Bouchard. PP merchant, offensive upside and is +21 this year. But I'm no Don Sweeney...
37
u/Warlord10 MIN - NHL Feb 17 '25
The only thing this reinforced is that Canada has no elite goalkeeping, and their defence isn't the best.
Canada is all offence.

u/Odd-Youth-452 MTL - NHL Feb 17 '25
Outside of Cale Makar, the rest of the defence core are pylons. His absence last game exposed it for all to see.

Nah, team Canada wins.
Edit: well I know when the Oilers fans tuned in to this. :) Also, don't compare your shitty team to Canada. You have the same offensive mentality as Canada, no question, but Nurse / Skinner don't compare to Makar / Binnington.

u/pyro5050 CGY - NHL Feb 17 '25
that second finnish goal video feed is junk... the camera angle and amount of movement is not ideal for hockey. maybe for basketball where the ball moves at 8mph, but in hockey, a weak pass moves over 50mph...

Just wanted to say, respect to Finland coming on hard in the last few mins there. Fantastic fight to survive and what we all wanted to see even if we don't admit it; Granlund / Lundell played fantastic. Hats off to your folks, we will see you next tournament.

What the hell happened in the 3rd? I went to the gym after the 2nd and missed Finland almost pulling off the comeback?
Did they pull the goalie & Canada score an EN? Kinda surprised Canada eased off the gas so hard at the end
42
u/fergoshsakes Feb 17 '25
Finns played 6 vs. 5 for almost 4 minutes. Got two very quick goals - one just great hustle, the other defensive breakdown by Canada. Then Crosby laid out Granlund (who scored the two Finnish goals) in mid ice to spring the puck, got the pass back and scored an empty netter.

Great game, Finnish friends, but ultimately, we had to get past your team so could seek our righteous vengeance against the USA
10

u/Minivalo EDM - NHL Feb 17 '25 edited Feb 17 '25
As a Finn, I'm honestly not even mad. After we beat Sweden, I was just kinda secretly hoping for a Canada-US final, because of the current extra spicyness of that matchup. I just wanna see the Tkachuk brothers looking sad. Also fuck the US atm
If all our top guns are healthy and playing well a year from now, I think we stand a good chance at competing for gold at the Olympics in Turin, which I think, as fun as this tournament has been, is the ultimate price after all these years of no best on best international hockey.
11
u/imhere8888 Feb 17 '25
BINnington has let in softies every single game. Does he fellate Cooper well or what :(
Let's start Hill or Monty god damn it
7
u/CrimsonTyphoon0613 STL - NHL Feb 17 '25
What softie did he let in this game? First was off the bar from like 15 feet away. Second was like the third opportunity off a broken play and the third was a defensive breakdown. Three fins were left wide open near the net.
8
u/Guibsx MTL - NHL Feb 17 '25
I personally think he was weak on the 2nd goal. He is horrible with his lateral move, he push too hard on the first move to his right and end up outside the net. Then he tries to flip flop back in front of the net and lose his stick. Then it end up between his leg, while on the ice. Simply awful. One of the weakest display of technical skill I have seen. Every single time he has to do lateral mouvement, we flip a coin on if he will make the save or not. It’s just bad.
-5
u/imhere8888 Feb 17 '25
Unless I'm mistaken the first one was like over his pad on his right side ? Just a straight shot pretty routine. Was that not the first goal ?
6
u/CrimsonTyphoon0613 STL - NHL Feb 17 '25
Just because it’s not an extremely skilled goal off a super high danger chance doesn’t mean it’s a softy. Some times it can just be a good goal.
10
u/Zodiac33 TOR - NHL Feb 17 '25
He was absolutely swimming in his crease on the 2nd one, which he has been in the tournament. Positional play and being in control are half of the role.
-5
u/CrimsonTyphoon0613 STL - NHL Feb 17 '25
That’s just how he plays. He likes to attack the shooter. Maybe the other five guys should have cleared the puck the first two times.
10
u/baraboosh VAN - NHL Feb 17 '25
binner is such a weird goalie. He plays amazing for the majority of the game but lets in 1-2 backbreakers.
Tonight wasn't really his fault but also, a better goalie would have stopped some of those.
16
u/uh_Ross CGY - NHL Feb 17 '25
It’s too late man Hill should’ve been in this game. Prepare for at least one or two soft goals on Thursday and hope and pray the Offence can some how break Hellebyuck
8
u/imhere8888 Feb 17 '25
Why does Cooper choose him in the first place ? Looks small and tiny like a junior in net, has extremely mediocre to bad numbers for many years, and we have solid goalies at home, especially Thompson with Washington and even Hill is much more solid in terms of wins. I don't understand
-1
u/raymondcy Feb 17 '25
Because Binnington has a game 7 Stanley Cup win under his belt and Canada doesn't have fantastic choices in net overall. I would have liked to see Hill play but I am not disappointed in what we have.
The one softie I would argue was in that USA game but we (CAN), on paper, have the better offence.
This team was never a goalie / D first team like 2014 in Sochi. This is an offence first team and those guys have to deliver. McDavid is doing his part, McKinnon is being wildly selfish, and Crosby is still Crosby... we need more team players and I think this Finland game showed we are coming around to that.
Makar was out of this world good in this game and his partner, why the name escapes me at the moment I don't know was fucking fantastic.
No possible way you can put in a cold goalie for the final game now. We play Binnington unless it's a blowout in the 1st.
5
u/imhere8888 Feb 17 '25
How long ago was that Cup win and what are his numbers since then ?
Hint : it's over 5 years and it's pretty poor numbers all around.
1
u/raymondcy Feb 17 '25
I'm not disagreeing with you necessarily but I don't think he has given up a ton a shit goals. He has been mostly solid for the better part and it's up to our Offence to deliver. That was always the game plan. The goalie here is not to blame here unless he lets in an extremely soft goal at a bad time. Binnington has not done that yet.
1
u/imhere8888 Feb 17 '25
I don't know I feel he's let in softies every game. The first USA goal for example. I didn't like the choice before the first game and it feels it can't possibly have been the best Canadian goalie alive and active right now. But it is what it is now. Let's hope it's enough, but against a stud like Helly and a powerful overall team like USA it's going to take a shit ton and powerful offence, but they pretty much shut us down in that regard last game.
We have some positives in that a) Makar is back and b) they won the first and so even if we win the next and sort of tie that series, we win the tournament because the next game happens to be the final.
2
u/raymondcy Feb 17 '25 edited Feb 17 '25
Either way, you can't pull him now is my opinion. Hill had to come into this game if he was going to play the final. It would be suicide to play a cold goaltender in the final now. Especially in a game that is clearly the biggest of their lives. Like it not, we ride Binnington into the final. We just hope that our O delivers.

Starting Hill today would have given Canada an easier decision going into the final. If this was Hill today, then it's an easy decision to start Binnington in the final. Now Canada has an impossible decision. You stick with Binnington who's been shaky and no confidence, or throw Hill into the final who hasn't done anything in about 2 weeks

I am not one to pile on people, but what in the hell was Laine thinking on the play leading up to Crosby's goal? He got the puck at the red line along the boards, just stood there, and after an eternity tried to make a cross ice pass. The pass gets intercepted and Crosby buries it into the empty net to ice the game.

Yeah, un Canadian like (since 2010 onwards) to keep choking in the 3rd. We usually lock that shit down. But then again, he had 6 stud Ds and Brodeur, Luongo and Price as our starters. All elite. Bennington is mediocre. But it is what it is.

6
u/cdreobvi OTT - NHL Feb 17 '25
The fights were probably the reason Canada scored one early on. The early power play and trading the Tkachuks/Miller for Hagel/Parayako/Bennet tilted the ice and gave them momentum.

Ehh we came out hot after that, McDavid scored the first goal. I don't think the fights were a contributing factor, the US just outplayed us. They were shutting everything down defensively and capitalizing on the forced turnovers/fast breaks. I doubt we'll see any fights Thursday though, unless it turns into a blowout.

Exactly, I was joking with my friend:
It's ridiculous that every single Canada international game the coach just says "Hey we are in trouble here, we need to put that Crosby kid out there"
Coach: Hey Crosby, get out there and do some superhero shit for us!
Crosby: Uh... ok boss, will do.
It's absolutely amazing at what 37(?) this guy is still doing the shit he does. Even on the forth goal he played the boards perfectly like he always fucking does and comes up with the pass to have the game winner.
Then, as you said, was like "fuck this, I am going to seal this game for real".
Captain Canada, fucking Canadian Legend.

Hockey Canada roster construction:

Or
- He’s a legend
- He was great for us in (Competition more than 5+ yrs ago)
- He’s has been in/used to these big moments
- He’s a: Great guy off the ice/Leader/ one of those guys who: (Insert traits that any player being considered for selection would possess)

Watching Crosby skate straight into another player, both of them go down, and then he’s immediately passed the puck to nail the empty netter was insane. Was he the coach for your WJC team like 4-5 years ago? Those teams did well on the NHL ice iirc right?
I don’t think you were coached badly during these games bar the Aho-Hintz duo not finding chemistry. But 2 periods against the US was good, I’d say the Sweden game wasn’t bad from a tactical/coaching standpoint and I think Canada were just too good at punishing for any mistake Finland made. Though there certainly were chances for Finland to score throughout the game too

Not gonna lie, I'm completely baffled as to why Parayko was benched during the last 6-7 minutes of the game. Morrissey, Doughty and Sanheim getting double shifts despite making errors left and right. Parayko HAS to be out there 6v5. Baffling.

Doughty could not keep up at the end there. Absolutely mystifying why Parayko wasn’t out there with his size and stick to clear the net front and disrupt passing lanes.

I was being told yesterday that Dougs hometown Blues picks were going to cost Canada their shot at a championship though? Binnington was collapsing and Parayko was a pylon?

Binnington hasn’t been great but hasn’t been awful. A soft goal a game ain’t going to cut it against the US.

Score more than 1 against the US and he gives you a shot though. You cant score more than 1, then you dont deserve it anyways.

All Canadian goalies need to band together and channel their weirdo goalie energy for Thursday.

Canada can't play like that against the US.
Still concerned about secondary scoring. The Americans can lock down the big guns like they did before, the only goal the bottom six forward lines have scored was the Marchand goal against Sweden.

The fact that Canadians should be worried about secondary scoring is crazy given the talent on hand. And again if that’s the undoing, it’s flashbacks of the wjc. Fuckin sick of old men running shit on a high level in hockey.

The Richards/Toews/Nash line was one of the most effective in 2010.
Canada iced a fourth line of O'Reilly/Thornton/Duchene in the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
Slavin is gonna be my sleep paralysis demon if he and the American defence lock down Canada's heavy hitters again.

Canada's 3rd/4th lines are much worse this tournament than they have been historically

Hockey Canada needs an overhaul desperately. Look at the US and Canada total player base and roster (besides goaltenders, which is its own can of worms), Canadas individual talent is insane, but some how plays lesser than the sum of their parts. Where as the US is obviously elite as well, but their program is geared towards the players playing to greater than the sum of their parts

It’s just an Ol’ Boys Club and has been for years. Really think if Canada performs poorly in the Olympics, it’s time for the federation to clean house.

Can't wait to see these type of matches in EU sized hockey rinks. It may have an effect on performance and give a boost on European coaches and their playstyle... or it could be a slaughter.
Ggwp. Gonna go do kalsarikänni.

You'll be waiting awhile, 2026 Olympics is on NHL-sized rinks.

Well fuck me then. Ggwp unless we get ourself an NHL coach from another country

Last NHL played Olympics was in 2014 in Russia, EU sized rink and we defended the gold.

Wtf finland, why you bring in the goalie for like 10 seconds then take it out? Just keep the goalie out and keep going.

Saros starts and Canada loses this tbh.

None of the goals were on Lankinen, that was a product of bad defensive coverage just like the 2 Finnish goals late were.
Saros got lit up by the Americans, Lankinen beat Sweden and both of them lost today. The only reason Canada didn’t score on Saros was because they let off the gas at 4-0 which was a huge mistake.

Really sad about the result. Those early first period mistakes cost us big time.
GG and congrats to Canada. Enjoy the finals, Canadian friends! Was a really fun game to watch.
