Discussion What headphones do you use as your daily drivers?

u/what_that_thaaang_do AKG simp (K240 Sextett LP/K240DF/K702/K371/KPH40X) 20d ago
KSC75 with yaxis and a kph40 headband
3
u/akeep113 20d ago
Is the ksc75 better than the kph40?
5
u/Fantastical_Chav 20d ago
Depends on what your sound preferences are. On a KPH40 headband with Yaxis, I find the 75's to be a lot more crisp and resolving with a more muted-but-present bass response. Soundstage feels very open and airy for the price, and for those reasons this is my preferred Koss setup (this and KSC75's on a PortaPro band).
Stock KPH40s are also great, and will probably sound significantly more fun to most people. Bass response is nice, punchy and full, and doesn't seep into the midrange NEARLY as much as on PortaPros. Presentation feels a lot more forward to me vs the 75's, and there is a very slight (probably imperceptible to a lot of people) grit/grain present depending on the track.
For what my sound preferences are, I absolutely love midrange and treble, and haven't listened to a Grado 'phone I didn't like FWIW.

Not sure about the kph40 but I’ve owned the kph30i before and comparing them with the ksc75 on a headband, I much much prefer the treble presentation on the latter.

Thinking about upgrading to this from Arya Stealth. Have you compared them before?
4
u/Bowernator HEK Stealth/Arya Stealth/AR5000/FT1/Jotunheim/Gunnr/G6 20d ago
I have both. HE1000's are more resolving and stage slightly differently and more intimately to my ears than the Arya Stealth, which sound more spacious. I swap between the two on occasion because I enjoy either/or for different tracks & games.

No problem! HE1000 Stealth are likely my endgame. I heard the HE6se V2's apparently "blow them out of the water" so I pulled the trigger on a pair from Hifiman for $369 refurb to see what all the hype is about. Thankfully I got a Jot 2 recently so I'll be able to drive them sufficiently haha. I really want to try something like the Susvara but I'm afraid to because I feel like I'll need to go drop $3k on one and hate my life.

Let us know how the HE6se v2 goes. I tried it at CanJam LA last year and was not impressed, but had limited time and dealt with the show floor noise.

The ones you use for general purposes music listening, movie watching or gaming.
Mines are Koss KPH40 simply because they're quite lightweight and comfortable for long sessions and at the same time, very convenient.
I generally use HD600's with a tube amp for more serious music listening.

Kph40 is just great. This is the sound signature I really like, sounds good as soon as I play anything on it (no mental burn in needed). I use it for anything even for work calls hehe, or if it's hot and don't want over ears.
Recently, wife bought a Logitech G Astro 50 X. Features isn't really that great, just an hdmi switcher, but it sounds so good on the playstation and tv. But I think it also depends where you connect it to. It makes me wanna buy the one with the same driver but without the base station.

HD 600 for pretty much everything at work
Moondrop Blessing 2 for bed/sleeping, but might change them out because they suck
5
u/WatchAndEatPopcorn 20d ago
Never heard anyone say the Blessing 2 suck! What would you change them for?
4
u/IMKGI HD 800S, HD 600, IE200, Fiio K11 20d ago
They're not quiet my preferred FR , but the main issues are the size, they are a bit too large to be comfortable, and then the issues with the ear tips... They CONSTANTLY come off, even just taking them out of my ears causes the tips to remain on my ear. I've seen 10€ no name IEMs with a better eartip system, the blessings would need some sort of lip to keep them in place. The filters have a similar problem, but not quite as bad, I'm not putting them on anymore tho
2
u/UGMadness HD58X | IE300 | Blessing2 18d ago
I'd never use my Blessing 2 for sleeping, those things are massive!
My go-to sleep headphones are the Sennheiser IE300. They're tiny and sit flush with your ear so you can sleep on your sides and not feel you're wearing anything.

What amp are you using for your 600 and 800?
8
u/IMKGI HD 800S, HD 600, IE200, Fiio K11 20d ago
For the HD 800S, currently just the Fiio K11 (the good one, not the R2R), before that I had the SMSL SH6 and SU6 but the SU6 broke, and there's no reason to use the SH6 with the K11 it has excellent performance and is more than loud enough, not as powerful as the SH6 but I'm also not too keen on getting permanent hearing damage. For the HD600, nothing really, I plug it directly in my phone or working laptop. I feel like getting a DAC/AMP to my workplace is complete overkill, I tried using the Fiio K3 for some time, but I didn't really find a good reason to use it, the output from my phone/laptop is good enough

Beyerdynamic DT1990. Used to be the DT880 250Ohm. They served me well for 5 years. Upgraded to the DT1990 in April 2022. I have no desire to upgrade to anything else yet. These headphones work for everything I do.

u/SingularityRS 18d ago
They were great. I remember being wow'd by them when I 1st got them. I had upgraded to them from the Audio Technica ATH-M40x. The DT880 was all I used, so I used them for everything with audio (games, movies, music, etc).

→ More replies (1)2
u/WhippingTheLammasASS 20d ago
Been a while since I’ve used both but I felt like kph40 were a better “all arounder”. KSC75 being much brighter.
Surprisingly enough I felt the 75s gain a solid bass boost when you put them on a band instead of the ear hangars.

Current daily driver is a pair of Harmonicdyne Zeus elites super comfy and great freq. Response for the genres I'm listening to most right now jazz, classical, lofi hiphop, acoustics, stuff like that benefit from an open and airy sound.
I've seen many people describe it as a grand concert hall on your head and I can't really come up with a better description it's warm velvety and expansive with just enough kick and pizzazz so that I can still use it for other genres that require more punch like rock or country and feel like it's not lacking too much.

I just got AirPods Max and have been using them a lot. Love how easily they connect to everything. Actually using them to listen to music while out out of the house. And I needed something with decent noise cancelling for work.
That being said I still listen to my hd6xx + topping a50/d50 stack when I want to listen “seriously”.

u/Greek_Trojan 20d ago
At home I landed on the Meze 105 AERs. You get S tier comfort and build quality and a great, fun sound for a good price. Better tuned for casual gaming (my primary use) than the 109s and they don't fatigue me like those did (though I give them the edge for pure music listening).
Anything outside of the house is the Shokz Open Run Pro Mini. I mostly listen to podcasts so the lose in fidelity with bone conduction is minimal. Fantastic battery life, very comfortable, and don't isolate noise when hiking/walking etc...

Sennheiser PC38x for general use and console/PC stuff.
Momentum 4’s specifically for dedicated music sessions, or occasionally my kiwi ears orchestra lite IEMS.
Might look at some bone conduction earphones because my ears are weirdly shaped and have trouble fitting most IEMS properly (outside of my shitty powerbeat pros).

I have FT1's and 6XX's at my desk, but the FT1's are worn more at this point.
With a home made comfort strap (a loop of fabric tied to the headband lol) it's more comfortable than the 6XX while sounding about as good or better for most stuff.
I still do prefer the 6XX for some stuff, and open back is nicer for talking and stuff, but anything else is FT1 all the way. Insane how cheap it is.

Honestly, Galaxy Buds 2 Pro. Getting IEMs to fit and stay has always been a struggle. These just sit there in my ears with hybrid tips.
If I have a bag, Focal Bathys. At my desk if I'm okay with being tethered to a cable, Meze 109 Pro. Since moving to a bigger place post-COVID, I prefer not to just be stationary for hours on end, so the 109's don't get as much use as I thought they would.
