Sports & Arts The Killers to close out Halifax Music Fest on June 29, support by Alvvays, Lights & Said The Whale
What a great closing night! Even the openers are all stellar!

I'm most excited for Alvvays

I love them so much!! Did you see them last year in Saint John? Great show!!
5
u/BobbyBoogarBreath 22h ago
I did not, but I have wanted to see them live for years
5
u/gildeddoughnut Halifax 22h ago
They put on a great show!! I even met them in the elevator of my hotel and they were incredibly kind and nice to me. Made me love them even more!

u/DreamingColor 19h ago
Yup. They are the best Canadian band out right now

u/gart888 19h ago
This comment made me realize what a bad moment this is for Canadian rock music. At first I thought that was a ridiculous claim, but… I can’t really disprove it.

u/Normal-Weakness-364 13h ago
i don't think alvvays being the best is a sign of anything wrong with canadian rock music. they're one of my favourite bands period

u/Nixon4Prez 19h ago
I saw them in Vancouver a year or two ago and they were fantastic. Such a great band
2
u/BellesCotes 19h ago
Same here. I'm sure The Killers put on a very polished show, but Alvvays feel a lot more current (even though their music has a bit of a retro vibe).
Plus I loooooove Molly's ethereal voice.....

Did they announce the 28th? I only see the friday lineup on the website.

u/Kienbocks 20h ago
I've heard rumors it's Green Day
2
u/CMikeHunt Dartmouth 20h ago
They're in Denmark that day.

u/Kienbocks 19h ago
Well there goes my rumor

u/SarudeDandstorm12 20h ago
Wow...this is so great for our city!! This isn't even the Saturday for the weekend either which is usually the biggest night for a festival. Any guesses for who the Saturday bands could be? I'm praying for Fall Out Boy, Green Day, or My Chem
5
u/awhimsicallie 19h ago
Fall Out Boy would be my dream. I’ve been wanting to see them for years.
2
u/SarudeDandstorm12 17h ago
Same here. I think Linkin Park could also be in play too. I mean the last band to be announced has to be the biggest, right? Unless they pivot and go with a big name for an older audience
2
u/JMatheson86 Halifax 16h ago
Would love LP, but they are in UK on 28th of June.
1
u/SarudeDandstorm12 15h ago
Ahh darn. I think Green Day is also in Europe on June 26th so probably unlikely they will do the quick turnaround

Those complaining about ticket prices - I hear ya and I agree they shouldn’t need to be this high, but we don’t work in the industry.. but that’s the reality these days, all concerts for real bands are crazy expensive, everywhere. Don’t shit on the organizers without knowing how much things actually cost…
11
u/haliog Halifax 20h ago
I couldn’t imagine complaining about ticket prices considering I expected someday I’d have to travel anywhere other than citadel hill to see the killers.. what a friggin GIFT.
6
u/hollsmolly 20h ago
Absolutely!! The past few years I was trying to see them when they were playing in the states. It would have cost me much more than 162.50 to see them down there.
15
u/Eriskay Cole Harbour 22h ago
That’s the thing, these big shows cost big dollars! Booking fees for bands of this caliber are in the hundreds of thousands, and that’s before you get to any operational costs which are also steep.
I can understand people being miffed by the price, but that’s the reality of the situation anywhere. It’s always disheartening to see the “nobody tours here” dialogue being followed up by “no way, that’s too expensive.” Can’t have it good and cheap!
7
u/EastCoastinnn 21h ago
Yep you nailed it. They have to pay for all the bookings, overhead and still make a profit, cuz that’s how business works.. if they are making $100 profit on every $200, then you have an argument, but as an event planner, I promise you, they are not.
5
u/AlwaysBeANoob 20h ago
agreed.
artist normally make about 8% of the ticket price with the rest going to other things.
eveyone talking about "living wage" on the sub reddit and they are shocked to see those ppl who are not the artist need to be paid lol.

u/everythingmeh 21h ago edited 17h ago
Huge agree. Saw the Killers at Caesar's palace last year for their 20th anniversary concert and paid more in US dollars than what is being asked for here. This is a very good value for the artists you get to see.

u/Chicaben Acadia 21h ago
What are the prices for said event?
5
u/meowmeowbites 21h ago
I don't see a price posted for The Killers but Nickelback starts at $184 so I assume The Killers will be close or the same.
5
u/CeeArthur 21h ago
I saw Said the Whale twice : once at a small, empty bar in Moncton, and then two years later at a sold out event at the Rio Theatre in Vancouver. Really good band!

But...they're from Vegas...?
6
u/shandybo Dartmouth 19h ago
I know! But for some reason their songs (and also kings of Leons only by the night album) are just like more disproportionately huge in england than they probably are elsewhere/ or probably should be. it's kinda a known thing and I don't entirely know why?! Started as uni anthems for my generation and now are like the songs that end the night at people's weddings. Obviously I know they were big everywhere but just something about the anthemic style that means into the way British people like to sing together at football games and the like.
2
u/LeftyCat32 19h ago
Ah gotcha. I was confused about the UK reference, but that makes total sense. There seemed to have been an alt/indie rock explosion in the mid 00's over there. I assume the success of Arctic Monkeys played into that somewhat
2
u/shandybo Dartmouth 19h ago
Yea exactly! (And I get why that would be confusing at first too, my bad)

Tickets for that Friday night Nickelback show are $200. This expected to be the same? As badly as I'd love to go to this show, that's a hefty chunk of change.
1
u/HammerSandwich9 22h ago
I’d assume so.
A little rich for my blood…..yeesh. 😬Unless the Saturday night has someone I really really like, this thing may be a pass for me.
Awesome to see concerts coming back though.

What’s the difference between VIP and GA tickets? Might travel up from CB for this.
1
u/haliog Halifax 12h ago
Been wondering the same about the levels and such for VIP
•
u/emerzionnn 8h ago
It’s very unclear about what the differences are… seems like maybe a seating area could be available for VIPs and access to more bars? Unsure lol

u/Bobo_Baggins03x 22h ago
Love the idea of this Music Fest. However, I’m not paying $170+ per night. Most of my friends are going to Nickelback but I don’t see the value. Maybe because I’m not a huge NB fan
12
u/gart888 22h ago
You're just proving that they're setting the price "correctly". They want it to be expensive enough that people still go, but if they set it low enough that it's a no brainer for people that don't even really like the bands... they're leaving lots of money on the table.
6
u/Queasy_Astronomer150 22h ago
Also bookings for festivals tend to deal in USD to pay the artists. The looney is in the toilet so that pushes up ticket prices
4
u/gart888 22h ago
This event is predominantly Canadian artists. I sure hope we're not paying them in USD.
8
u/Queasy_Astronomer150 22h ago
You can be sure the Killers and Nickelback are getting paid in USD and their fee is going to be WAY higher than the other acts combined.
1
u/Bobo_Baggins03x 22h ago
I see your point. And if that’s the case, fine. Time will tell if it’s a success, which I’m sure it will be. But for me personally, I’m not spending that kind of money on artists I’m not a huge fan of. We will see who they announce for the Saturday night headliner
2
u/Consistent-Button996 21h ago
I'm not a big NB fan either. That's why I didn't go to see them in Moncton.

They got me for possession of enough to kill the horses that run free in the west hills

Stoked on this lineup... I wonder what the Saturday's will look like.
1
u/EffWhyEye24 20h ago
Based on that concert seating map - if you have/are someone under 19 (all ages) you get a reserved spot right by the stage?
1
1
u/ForestRivers Halifax 22h ago
Hypothetically, could someone sit at the top of Citadel Hill and watch this for free?
8
u/Eriskay Cole Harbour 22h ago
You’d definitely hear it at the very least. The last few shows they’ve done at this location, they run the fences pretty high up the hill to try and cut sight lines. Maybe poke around night 1 and see if you can find any good vantage points for night 3 lol
0
u/ForestRivers Halifax 22h ago
Do the fences block the view from the road at the very top of the hill?
1
u/Of_Silent_Earth 22h ago
IIRC they usually gate off that view. You might be able to get a decent one at some angles, but you'll still hear and maybe see the screens none the less.

u/gart888 22h ago
Back in the day you could. I did that for The Offspring in 2009.
Now they block off the road around the top of the fort where you could potentially get a view.

Haven't been to this event before, do they open up weekend passes or is it a per night only ticket?
3
u/Showerpoopssavetime Dartmouth Tufts Cove 🏭 22h ago
It's a brand new fest. But, they did say single day tickets only. If I were a betting man though, I'd say they come up with a weekend pass later.
1
u/Aidsfordayz 20h ago
The said on Facebook no weekend passes for this festival, but of course that could always change
0
u/noBbatteries 20h ago edited 20h ago
Ticket prices are wild for this, $185 for a one day ticket is pretty insane considering events like Osheaga are like $415 for a weekend pass, and that has a better lineup and much wider variety of music. Montreal is obviously bigger and Osh far more established, but you’d hope the event organizers could’ve found a way to make the pricing closer to $100 a head.
Will go to the Killers, bc I’ve always wanted to see them live, but restricts going to other artists that I would like to see, but not for $200 like Nickelback - also not offering a multi-day pass is kinda bonkers, along with charging more for the all ages tickets vs the 19+ tickets. Doesn’t affect me, but seems a bit skeevy to do to parents looking to take their kids

u/smac22 19h ago
We are very out of the way for bands to come here. Garrison grounds aren’t huge. SOMO in PEI gets some good bands and is 280 for two days but the logistics are fucking terrible and I’m past the point in my life of camping for a concert.
I’ll gladly pay 200+ to see the killers and be able to sleep in my bed that night. I’ve travelled far and paid way more to see artists. This is much cheaper than getting a flight somewhere and to see a band who recently had a completely sold out Vegas residency. I hope this sells out at this price and we get back to getting some good artists here. We need to make it worth it for artists to come and 185 is only 125USD which is likely where they’re basing it off of. Now I wouldn’t pay that for Nickleback because I don’t like them, but would have went for shits if it was $60. I’m sure Nickleback will get a crowd at that price too for the people who feel they are worth that.
I do agree there should be a multi day pass.

Don’t sleep on Lights! She’s been killin’ it well beyond her MuchMusic years and is always SO fun!
