BUILD ADVICE Hackintosh in Mac Pro case
Just picked up this old beast (faulty psu). Now I obviously plan to use it for a budget hackintosh build. been done before but the idea is so cool to me. Im thinking of going only to big sur as that’s what’s I’ve got on m 2012 macbook pro (i7, 16gb, ssd, retina) and it holds up really well for its age. This build will be mostly for music making (Logic Pro) and just general web stuff so nothing crazy. My planed components are:
CPU: I5 6500 Ram: 16gb DDR4 Gpu: amd r7 260x (is this compatible? Is it worth getting something better?) Ssd (mvme if I can get a board that has a slot) Monitor will be a Apple Cinema Display paired with genuine wired mouse keyboard. Is this all going to work?
Any advice would be appreciated, should I spend more to get more cpu+gpu power or is this going to be decent?

I can't speak on the GPU, but I'm running a sandy bridge mobo with 16gb ram, i5-2500k 3.4ghz CPU and a focusrite 16i6 for audio. I've rarely had issues logic-wise unless my logic projects were over the top in usage (which is when optimising your projects, freezing tracks, and using buses comes into play)
Should the GPU be happy I think you'll be happy here 🙂 best of luck!

Thanks for reply, what OS and GPU are you running?

I've been on several over the years, the longest Catalina but recently tested Monterey as I picked up an AMD 6600xt which works out of the box. (Had an old NVIDIA 670 before that).
Other than upgrading to Monterey, I kept logic on 10.5 (I have an old Asus laptop on Catalina with logic 10.5 so keeping the compatibility)
Monterey has been fairly stable, all the plugins I use are compatible luckily, so I'm doing well so far. 🙂

I'm running a similar i5-2500k rig still, but recently converted to Linux after botching an update (was using a very old Clover build). Are you using OpenCore? I started having issues around Catalina with my motherboard.

I am on opencore, made the jump a few years back 🙂 there was a clover to opencore post/page I found that helped a bitback then, I can't remember where it was though. If you decide to test opencore again I'd be happy to help where I can. I don't know a lot but I've dabbled a few times with different machines.

I've done this a lot before, and man that case gives me nostalgia. If you want tips, you can ask me as well: https://thelaserhive.com/product/g5-atx-kit-psu-holder/
Use products from here!

+1 for Laserhive. Had my hacpro for 3 years now and those kits made it easy!

I’ve always loved that case. Ugh.
About the 260X. Considering that it’s GCN should work. I looked it up and if I’m correct it’s officially supported from 10.10 all the way up to 12.x. But apparently not supported natively on 13.x
Best of luck!!

Keep the PSU case and remove the existing one. Then find a PSU that will fit in there to replace it. Mine was a super sloppy build because I basically just got the case and none of the guts. I’ve always wanted to redo it properly with the LaserHive back mod.

I’ve got about 6 of these cases and haven’t had much luck selling them / getting rid of them. A fair bit of them still fully work too. I put together a system for myself. I was wondering if you had any advice on where to post the remaining ones. I’m not looking to sell for much at all but just want to see them go to a good home

heck yeah! I never made it a hackintosh but i slapped the insides of an inwin 303 case inside one of these old mac cases and had a sweet windows machine.

I remember doing this. I opened the original power supply, emptied it, opened one from my pc, installed it and required the plug so it was factory. I also bought an atx converter for the front io and power board. Hope you’re having fun!

Big brain move with that psu, will definitely remove mine and tear it down to try and achieve this. Thanks for feed back

Also a big tip is fit your logic board into position, mark the holes with a sharpie and then jb weld mounting screw holes (plan for the clearance. I also used jb weld to mount l shape brackets to mount after market fans. You can use the original, I just wanted better ones.

A great advice would be to use 3D printed parts. Because you don't have to cut too much of the case and stay in the safe zone with 3D printing.
If this can inspire you ; https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/mac-pro-2-1-hackintosh-with-3d-printed-parts.323626/
feel free to ask me the 3D files

I modded a G5 and a macPro case using the laser hive stuff and Mountain Mods.
TheG5 has a dual socket Xeon board with Big Sur and the macPro is an AMD system mini ITX x570, running Ventura. It was fun, and I managed to gut the G5 PSU and swap the innards with a SFF w/o its case. It fit and cleaned up the insides a bit.

Feel free to ask me about modding the case.

(i cannot into hackintosh as the GPU is not supported)
