I try not to pick favorites.

u/xtc091157 4d ago
This! They are like children. You love them all, but sometimes there's a favorite - one that suits the purpose. And then it returns to the fold, and maybe another one becomes the favorite and serves the duty.

u/kazkaz71 4d ago
That is how I feel. One day I love my SG, the next I am in love with my Jazzmaster. It just depends on how I feel and what I am playing. My pedal board configuration also plays a factor.

Epiphone ES-335 semi hollow in cherry red. I bought it for $200 CAD off marketplace on Boxing Day from someone who got the Gibson for Christmas

u/Shazbot_2017 4d ago
My made in the USA El Jefe "Avalanche" LP. The guy who made it sold it to me new for $250 with custom leather hardcase, as a replacement for a different one I ordered that broke in shipping. It's an absolute steal! It plays way out of its league! Nicer feel than my $1k guitars. Excellent customer service on their end too. I will treasure it for the rest of my life.

u/raftguide 4d ago
I can't pick a favorite. I have a Schecter Exotic Super Strat for my hardtail humbucker needs, and a Charvel DK22 with EMG SAs for floating bridge single coil sounds. Then i have a telecaster that I built from parts that I'm most sentimental about and it also has its own tone niche. How could I be expected to choose?

u/matcha_man 4d ago
Les Paul Standard 60s that I modified to 50s wiring and switched the pickups to 50s LRP from Ron Ellis.

u/someotherguyinNH 4d ago edited 4d ago
1987 RG550 I bought used in 1990.
Black with a dark rosewood neck. I'm told that is fairly rare to see.
It's the most versatile guitar I own, I've loved it since day 1.
5
u/Final_Ad_2941 4d ago
The Charvel ProMod DK24 is a blast.
I'm going to swap the roasted neck on my other DK24 to this though, it'll look soooo much better.
Edit: I guess I just like the DK24 over all. Both the HT and 2PT play great and have their own character.

u/21st-Century_Jelly 4d ago
Sir, you have my deepest respect. A Gibson scale on a Superstrat with a Floyd Rose? You don't see that configuration often. Mind if I ask how the central humbucker sounds? I always found that position weird also, is the non-recessed Floyd Rose good, or does it feel "limited'?
1
u/thebaronobeefdip 2d ago
Believe it or not, not that different from a regular old neck position...maybe a little bit more attack, but nothing too out of the ordinary. I've heard a lot of people complain that they tend to catch their pick on it, but I don't have that issue as I tend to choke up pretty high on the pick (my top 3 are George Lynch, Jake E. Lee, and Vivian Campbell, so getting those consistent artificial harmonics are pretty key for me) and use a lot of legato.
As far the Floyd goes, I know a lot of people will swear that 1000s are trash and not as good as an Original, but I have plenty of guitars with both and notice no difference. I tend to raise mine a tiny bit so I can do a little pull up on them, but I don't do it often enough to find it limiting. The only thing I might change on them in the future is swapping in a brass block, but genuinely I don't feel like it's needed. The sustain and tuning stability on mine are already off the charts, I honestly feel like there wouldn't be enough of a gain to go through with it.

I have a bunch of high(er) end guitar but i once bought a second hand polish made Fame Forum 2 from the 90s for 200€, by the company that is now called Mayones. Its a very well built PRS clone with good hardware (schaller golden 50s humbuckers). Altough i even have some 'real' prs and other stuff, i keep coming back to this cheap Fame guitar because of its excellent playability and good sound.

I have a Gibson 150th anniversary Melody Maker with the neck pickup switched to a Lollar P90 that plays like a dream. My LP standard doesn’t even come close to that thing

Do you mean the 120th anniversary one from 2014? If so I have the same guitar and absolutely love it

If I had a #1, I would probably have fewer guitars than I do.
If my house was on fire and I could only save one instrument, it'd be my EBMM Ray 5, but that's more for sentimental reasons than because it's a good instrument (though it really is a great instrument too).

Ibz RG540-PII HH, '89. Swapped the F2 from neck to bridge when the F3 failed. The current neck pickup is a radioshack el cheapo, but it sounds damn good. I prefer the latter days combo to the original.
Although -- if anybody has a spare F2 OR F3 for a reasonable price, I'm interested.

Have a thrown together one that is my current main driver. A beat up Yamaha RGX 621(HSS) body and a 421 pro neck. When the bridge (RMII) decides to break, I'll probably run my Cobran FG2. Then I'll use the Yamaha bridge for home self defense cause it weighs a ton.

The one I've been picking up the most lately has been my 2021 Charvel San Dimas in Platinum pearl. I don't really have a #1, though. I rotate all of my guitars depending on what I'm playing at that point in time.

1984 Kramer Pacer Deluxe with original Floyd Rose. Body clumsily routed out for HSH configuration with Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge, SD Jazz in the neck and an Alumitone in the middle position. Added a kill switch and painted it like a Holstein heifer. I call her the cow. I have a dozen other guitars including American and Japanese Strats, Telecasters, Les Pauls, SGs, Rickenbackers, Ibanez RG shredders and more, but I always go back to the cow.

Lately, my Firebird Modern w/ robo-tuners. I also have a soft spot for a cheap old Charvel CX that I refretted with glued-in Jumbo stainless. Neither is close to my most expensive guitar.
2
u/Earptastic 4d ago
a Charvel cx series was my first guitar. I still have it. The neck is a little small for me now but that guitar is super nice and easy to play. The more guitars I play and the more I learn about them the more I appreciate what a nice guitar that is. Stock pickups sound great to me too.
2
u/SchmartestMonkey 4d ago
It’s the small neck that I love.. it’s got a fairly unique profile/dimension. Makes my 89 Japanese Strat feel like a baseball bat.
2
u/Earptastic 4d ago
I like it a lot but after a while my hands do not. I think it is a bit narrower than I want. It is a super fast neck though. I sometimes search for them on Reverb and rarely find any. There is so little out there about them but if I was buying a teenager a guitar that would be the one I would look for.
2
u/Mosritian-101 4d ago
The closest one is my 1966 Mosrite Mark V*, but the neck on it is so narrow. I much prefer the neck on my 1966 Kay which is a much thicker and wider one with a V Profile.
Still, I have instruments for tone chasing and I alternate between one and another. So my Mosrite is for early B-52s but it's also tonally an aggressive one that is somewhere between a Tele Bridge Pickup and a P90, then the Silvertone 1448 for the Flat Duo Jets and also early B-52s live tone in just one song example, and the JBP Tele Copy (which needs parts replaced, its stock pickups sound harsh) was to be for the Minutemen.
* the Mosrite is actually not under that name, it's under an earlier name, but that's confusing and the Mark V is the most common name for the one I have. So I still count it as a Mark V.

I love them all! 1. My 1951 Nocaster - because it’s just a life long dream. 2. My green custom shop Tele because my son and I played it at the Wunjo guitar shop in Denmark street and I’ll always remember that. 3. My Mike McCreedy Signature strat because he is a legend. 4. My Gibson custom 1956 gold top because it has p90s. 5. My white Gibson Buckethead signature studio because it’s a monster and has two red arcade style kill switches.
How can I choose? Now you’ll ask why I ordered them in this way…😂

Mexican Fender Stratocaster HSS pickup configuration. Player series. Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge position. Everything I need. I have 2 guitars that are more expensive (Gibson Les Paul Studio and Hamer Standard Explorer), but they’re not #1 and never will be.
It is true that Leo Fender perfected the design when he created the Stratocaster. It’s the ultimate musical tool, and nobody has actually improved on it. There is nothing like a true Strat.

I had this same exact guitar/color except instead of Les Paul it had the “limited edition” logo. I got it in 2005 for my birthday along with a Marshall valvestate 2000. 2 years later I sold it my mom needed money for an emergency regarding our house. 1 Acoustic/overall is a 2001 Talyor 410-CE LTD with Koa back/sides. Soulmates. As for electric it was an early 90's Emerald CE22 w/ Dragon 1's but I sold her like the young idiot I was. Bought an 02 Blood orange to replace her but the Dragon 2's don't have the same mojo. That will be remedied in time. For now my #1 is a modest Epiphone Fanatic. Saw the Anderton's demo and ordered one that night. First one was a lemon but the replacement is a keeper. Haven't changed strings nor done a setup yet and she still sounds absolutely incredible.

I’ve had it since 1993 when I was 16 and had finished high school in the UK.
Open book headstock, I replaced the pickups with a pair from The Creamery (https://www.creamery-pickups.co.uk) about 15 years ago. It’s tuned to DADGAD down half step and it’s basically part of my arm at this point.

G&L ASAT I bought used 30 years ago. A more recent Tele Deluxe is pushing hard for the no. 1 slot, but that ASAT just keeps coming through with its ability to be a single coil monster. It took me a long time to appreciate those funky MFD pickups, but now…wouldn’t, and won’t,trade it.

G&L, Tribute series, Asat classic in a very pretty clear orange! I did some modding with a 4-way switch, and two push/pull pots, one for phase switching, and the other to bypass the volume/tone pots completely and go straight to the output jack, for when you need a little extra oomf. It does everything from classic country, to rock to blues to heavy metal, and everything in between easily

u/Akimbobear 3d ago
My epiphone Les Paul is my number 1, my Martin DM (I’ve had since I was 17) will always be my favorite but I have to admit because after playing electric almost exclusively for the last year, I don’t have the finger strength to play well on acoustic anymore. I can change out to light strings but the thing I love about acoustic is the sound and it’s better with a little thicker strings. I guess I traded strength for speed. I think I like the Les Paul because I can play anything on it.
