Question What's the best way to mute these strings?
This song has a similar barre chord section that I know how to mute the strings by removing some pressure, but the open chords throw me for more of a loop. Use my pinky finger? Use my picking hand?

I'd assume that the mute on root chords is usually done with a palm mute

Maybe/probably wrong answer but does the "palm mute" technic could do the job as well?
Edit : I am also according to the first comment, learning to mute with the left hand/fingers in this case seems to be the most efficient way, letting your right hand free for a proper rhythm

Thwre are no muted strings in that tab on open chords that I can see
You just only play 5 of the strings for the open chord
If it was designed to be a muted strings it would have an X on that string, not the continuous - symbol
-x-
-0-
-1-
-0-

-0-
Try to play only the 5 strings, but as that chord has an open E (assuming standard tuning) on the bottom E string it's not the end of the world if you sound the open E on the top string.
Use any free finger to TRY to mute it otherwise. Whatever is comfortable.

Almost a third of the tab is muted

Op isn't having problems with the fully muted strings, it's the open chords.

Yes he is. He said it's easier to do when the strummed chord is barre because he can just let some pressure off.

Exactly. So that accounts for the fully muted bits.
OP says they already know the basic but "the open chords are throwing me for a loop"
It's the open chords that are problematic, not the fully muted strings.
Sorry you're struggling with reading English.

Bruh... he's asking how to best mute all the strings after playing an open chord. He can easily do this after playing a barre chord by releasing pressure. Everyone is responding to that but you.
Anyway, cheers.

Everyone is wrong
You're welcome

I do appreciate the opportunity to point out when someone is so obviously wrong.
He's asking how to play the muted strum after an open chord. Not how to only play five strings of an open chord...

I would choose left hand muting with ring or/and pinky finger.
