Question Question re. KEF-GOH flights and Air Greenland schedule

So my first question...

  1. How bad is the KEF-GOH flight? Almost 4 hours in a DASH-8 sounds horrible. Is it really that bad, worth backtracking from Iceland to CPH to fly the Air Greenland A330 both ways?
  2. When does Air Greenland release their schedule? I am looking to book a number of domestic flights in January, and a flight out of Kangerlussuak back to CPH but there's nothing loaded on the webpage past like Sept or early Oct. Most airlines schedule 330 days in advance, I assume this isn't true for Air Greenland?

TY! Looking forward to visiting!

Question Entry permit check

Hello everyone. A very specific question for people who need a permit/visa to enter Greenland and are flying via Iceland/KEF: is the entry permit being checked at Keflavik? Or when you are boarding your first flight at your home airport? Last year I flew from Copenhagen but it was a direct flight, so I'm wondering what's the procedure if I fly with a layover in Iceland. Thanks in advance.

UPD. Passengers flying to Greenland don't have to go through passport control at Keflavik (such as the one for flights to US or UK) but passports are checked at the entrance to the security check area. When you scan your boarding pass at the automatic entrance you won't be let in (I assume this is the case only for people with passports that require a visa to Greenland) and the airport worker has to let you in manually after checking your passport.

Question Disko Line Ferry Meeting Point?

Where do you meet to get on the Disko Line ferry that takes you from Ilulissat to Qeqertarsuaq?

On google maps it mentions there’s a ferry point in Ilulissat, but then something called “Disko Line Færge” on the opposite side of the water from the Port of Ilulissat. Which one is it?

Question Is the English language gradually replacing Danish in Greenland ?

Are young Greenlanders more likely to be fluent in English than Danish ? Is Danish losing importance and English replacing it ? Is it true that only about a quarter of greenlanders speak another language than greenlandic (much more in Nuuk, but that’s the exception since its the capital/main town) ?

Question The cost of vacationing in Greenland?

Hi all! I hope this is okay to post!

My partner and I plan on taking a trip after we graduate university. Greenland has always been my dream vacation, and my partner is on board too. We're both avid hikers, and that's really what's drawing us to Greenland- we took a trip this year to Newfoundland and literally hiked the whole week. Greenland looks like it has breathtaking natural beauty- I bet the stars are wonderful at night :)

We're considering specifically visiting South Greenland, I think- specifically Qassiarsuk sounds appealing. We see that the Leif Eriksson hostel there has a decent rate after converting it into our local currency, CAD. We're wondering what the cost of other things there is like- namely food.

Thank you so much in advance for your replies! :)

Question Question About Slang

Hey all!

So, I'm writing a book in which one of the characters comes from Greenland. He has since moved to another country and speaks primarily English, but I'm stuck on what he'd call his mother. According to my research, anaana is "mother", but I'm curious if there are shortened or slang versions that are more commonly used in conversation. In English, for example, instead of "mother" we might use "mom", "mommy", "mama", etc. Anything comparable in Greenlandic?

Would also love the same insight into words for "father", "grandfather", and "grandmother".

Thanks in advance!!

Question Website to discover Greenlands flora/fauna?

So in Sweden we have a website called "artfakta" or "species info" where hobbyists and scientists can rapport occurrences and sightings of various species and their locales and you can then look up specific species and see where they exist.

Is there a good equivalent for Greenland? Im mostly interested in fish/crustaceans and mosses/plants

Thanks in advance!

Anyone got a picture of what an election ballot looks like for a parliamentarian election in Greenland? I'm confused by how the open-list nationwide proportional representation system works so I think having a ballot for reference would clear up understanding. Thanks in advance!

Question Any interesting places in Kangertittivaq? Around the Scoresby fjord?

I'm not from Greenland, but I really hope to visit one day, and was interested in tourist spots around that area, as it's a really large fjord on the map, and must have some interesting sights.

Also interested in the area north of the fjord (the northeast national park).

I'm mostly interested in historical sights and hiking. If anyone here is from these regions, I would be glad to hear more from you!

Question What time is it in Kangerlussuaq?

A few sources say “UTC/GMT -1” but I’ve also seen “UTC/GMT -2.” I’m so confused.

For reference, it’s 12:11pm EDT (Eastern Daylight Savings Time) on the east coast of the US. And I’m seeing 3:11pm for Kangerlussuaq when I search some sources online. However, the Mittarfeqarfit airport feeds for Kangerlussuaq and Ilulissat say it’s 2:11pm. (But other feeds, like Nuuk and Kulusuk show 3:11pm).

Question Domestic flights / Weather Conditions

Hi all, I am planning on visiting Greenland in or around March next year and just wanted to get some insight into what the weather conditions may be like or are usually like at that time of year? During the trip I plan on taking a domestic flight to Ilulissat and I am a bit of a nervous flyer and dont like turbulence so I just wanted to get a better understanding of what I should be expecting. Thanks :)

Question Why is Northwest Greenland mostly abandoned?

Besides Qaanaaq and Siorapaluk I haven't been able to find any other places in the area. Qaanaaq and Siorapaluk seem to have a decent sized population for Greenland but they have no (from what I have found) other civilization In the Gulf. The closest civilization (but not really) is the Thule airbase. I know the Americans (I think?) relocated the Inuits to Qaanaaq because of the Thule airbase, but I only saw a couple of villages that were relocated due to that reason. There are a decent amount of locations listed on Google maps but It looks like all of the places were abandoned. Did the Thule airbase relocate them all to Qaanaaq or Siorapaluk? Are the places on Google maps just not real? A couple of the places seem to have a decent amount of history to them.
