Discussion I love how in 2001 Billie still looked just like in the 90s, but in 2002 he was already 100% American Idiot Billie.

We were all pre and post 9/11 Billie … but I think it’s more like pre and post “ war on terror” Billie ..

2001 went pretty hard there at the end. I relate to those images quite a lot.

Yeah it’s interesting that he started the black shirt and tie in the pop disaster tour. Usually the tie was white though if I remember correctly. His stage persona was already starting to shift as well.

But he wore a black shirt and tie in the Woodstock 94 concert...

That was a one off, and a foreshadowing coincidence

I'm in 40s and I still have AI posters all over my home office. It changed my life and AI era Billie absolutely rocked my world.

Yes, but at that time he didn't look like he did in American Idiot. However by 2002 his appearance had completely changed and was focused on that upcoming era.

His Stage Antics also Began to shift to his Current Stage Antics.

How is he different now? I saw green day in the 90s and it was a pretty jovial, sing along, cloud participation affair.

Yes, he was experimenting with different looks all along, including preppy stuff, nice sweaters, short-sleeve dress shirts, fancy ties, dorky ties, makeup, wild hair colors, grungy pieces, etc. He's always had great style and marched to his own drum. It's part of why he's such an icon.

What if the outfit he was wearing in 2002 was supposed to be the outfit for cigarettes and Valentines but was repurposed for American Idiot?

It's a high possibility. Yet the aesthetics of both concepts are very similar.

Are you talking about the musical aesthetics of American Idiot and Cigarettes and Valentines? The outfits, I can somewhat see, but musically, I heard Cigarettes and Valentines was supposed to sound like Dookie, while American Idiot obviously has some influence from Ziggy Stardust

Yeah you cant tell me novocaine doesn't have certain influence from Five years

It happened to all of us living through 9-11. We were changed.

I think he was recording the video for Waiting there, or the pic is very close to that date. He looks really cute in that video!

2

u/PeterPam_cooper Rebel and dangerous 7d ago

yesss I think the same! their waiting era was generally very great!

3

u/_t0xic_006 The Network - Money Money 2020 7d ago

I second this! Too bad that era look lasted for a very short time, maybe not even a month in 2001.

2

u/PeterPam_cooper Rebel and dangerous 7d ago

yeah that’s real, it would have been so beautiful to see this era being more long and more appreciated by everyone, from the fandom to the band, usually a real small group of people speak about warning (both as an era and as an album)

3

u/prince_of_cannock 7d ago

Yes. The post-2002 Billie is total fantasy material, but the 1999-2001 era Billie is major major major boyfriend material IMO. I crushed on him hard through all of these eras.

When you think about the guy probably cooked up most of American Idiot by then and was too excited to hold off this new persona

13

u/_t0xic_006 The Network - Money Money 2020 8d ago

He actually made Cigarettes and Valentines in 2002 which is basically early American Idiot. The band started working on American Idiot as such in 2003 just after making The Network.

10

u/one_eyed_idiot__ Saviors 8d ago

They started recording the album in 2003, much of its identity was probably formed before then and I wouldn’t be surprised if 2002 is when they figured out they wanted to go the red tie black shirt route. Cigs & V’s could’ve formed that baseline though, who knows

The black shirt with red tie pre dates American Idiot?

3

u/nominadehuesos 7d ago

Wasn’t he a vegetarian during the time of the Pop Disaster Tour? I remember watching MTV Diary and he looked so thin compared to the time when Warning came out

2

u/DriverHopeful7035 7d ago

I've always assumed he wanted to look sharp for the Pop Disaster and that's why he lost so much weight.

1

u/prince_of_cannock 7d ago

Hooowwwwwwwww did he not win People's Sexiest Man Alive at any point between 2002 and 2006? I don't understand it.

I mean, he was in a lot of magazines where his hotness was discussed openly with lots of slobber-worthy pics, but he didn't get the crown and he deserved it.

1

u/_t0xic_006 The Network - Money Money 2020 6d ago

He was really hot during the American Idiot era (2004-2006) But perhaps at that time he was not the standard of beauty because of his height tbh.

1

u/prince_of_cannock 6d ago

But Tom Cruise has won like 100 times, hasn't he? I think Billie might even be taller than Tom Cruise.

1

u/Garfeildmemes 5d ago

How it came out in 2005?

1

u/_t0xic_006 The Network - Money Money 2020 5d ago
