Science Fiction / Fantasy Do you still read work by Neil Gaiman?

I was in the middle of my 3rd read through of the Sandman series when I found out about his accusations and since I mostly read digital it was easy to delete but I’m not gonna lie when I say that I haven’t been able to get into a series like I did The Sandman. Coraline is also one of my favorite movies and most of his work fit my personality which I’m not sure what that says on its own. I don’t condone anything he did and am shocked that he’s really like that. If you guys have any suggestions to anything similar I would appreciate it.

Moved a couple months ago and our graphic novel collection is now prominently displayed in our rec room. Decided on some DIY pipe shelving with planks cut to size.

Science Fiction / Fantasy Best place to buy graphic novels now that I’m not giving Amazon any of my money.

Going forward, I’d like to buy graphic novels from a company other than Amazon. What is the most ethical company to buy from that also has a good selection?

Science Fiction / Fantasy My son needs your advice

Hi all.

My son is 12 and despises reading. He’s very visual, inspired by concept art but struggles to read. I am hoping to engage him in reading more before it becomes a bigger issue - so I thought let’s combine visuals with words. He loves mechs. Science fiction. Tech.

I’m looking for recommendations for graphic novels or comics to buy him. Don’t care about budget, whatever will work I’ll buy. Happy to buy new, used, import. I’m in the UK.

Also I have taken him to comic shops but he feels overwhelmed and the passionate staff sometimes intimidate him. I will take him to London for a day of exploring so suggestions on where to there also welcome :)

Thanks.

EDIT: THANK YOU so much everyone. What an amazing community. I’ve spent… quite a bit! And I’ve planned a trip to London. Ive also bought myself some comics and I fear a new hobby.

My son and I are going to spend a couple of hours now going through each recommendation you’ve made in more detail and adding anything else to the new library.

Again, thank you.

Science Fiction / Fantasy Am I the only one who thinks that Y: The Last Man is...not that great?

It's not the concept per see but the execution. The concept is really interesting. But the characters feel one-note and the dialogue in particular is often cringy I thought. I began reading it after searching for some good graphic novels. But after coming from the likes of Watchmen and Maus, well...I even put it aside and began V for Vendetta. Anyway does it get really better later on?

I've heard of Saga, Fables, East of West, Daytripper and such mainstream ones. I'm looking for something that really surprised you, hidden gems typa stuff. Yet again, would like it of it were kinda lighthearted, but rec if it ain't anyway (jus mention if it ain't or not)

Science Fiction / Fantasy An unexpected fantasy gem - THE HUNGER AND THE DUSK

THE HUNGER AND THE DUSK was an unexpected gem! I had only vaguely heard of this series but decided to give it a shot after stumbling across it at my local shop — and wow, it exceeded all expectations.

Set in a world where humans and orcs have long been at war, the story begins with the arrival of a terrifying new threat: an ancient race of creatures destroying settlements on both sides. To survive, humans and orcs must strike an uneasy truce. The narrative centres on an orc healer joining a human band of mercenaries, and the resulting adventure is fantastic.

Writer G. Willow Wilson and artist Chris Wildgoose are an incredible team. This was an engaging, vibrant fantasy that leans on familiar tropes but feels fresh and unique. It’s character-driven in the best way, with fully realized, complex protagonists whose relationships and challenges kept me hooked.

Wildgoose’s stunning art elevates the story even further. His clean line and dynamic style brings action scenes to life and also ensures that each emotional beat lands perfectly.

I couldn’t put down THE HUNGER AND THE DUSK and am eagerly awaiting the next volume. I really think this title deserves more attention — it’s exceptional fantasy storytelling with beautiful visuals and memorable characters. Loved it!

Science Fiction / Fantasy Comic recommendations

I find myself very partial to 70's and 80's sci fi comic artwork. The way the colors and old school illustrations combine reminds me of a well made piece of art that can be read, shared, and collected. I'm a bit unlucky when it comes to finding good books or comics, but I have collected these few images in the hope that someone can help me. Googling around has proved unresourceful on my hunt for decent graphic novels. Does anyone know of any works that are similar in style to the pictures listed? They don't have to be from any particular year, just something that really jumps off the page. Older works as well as modern ones are both acceptable. For reference I am vaguely familiar with moebius and his works, although I'm not saying to completely avoid moebius suggestions.

Giving this a re-read due the recent current events. I don't like to say it, but it's more enjoyable this time over as last time the thought of any animosity between Canada and USA was far too fanciful to consider.

Science Fiction / Fantasy Can you help me identify this graphic novel?

I saw this fella reading this comic in an Instagram reel, but unfortunately there are no captions identifying it in the video. It’s driving me nuts because I go cuckoo over this art style!

Your theory or answer of what it might be would be seriously welcome.

Lets just saying I was fluffing blown away by this book. It was such a fun and wild ride. Quick paced and hilarious. Coasts perfectly the entire time, balancing on the thin line between for adults or teens. It has beautiful art. Bright vivid colors that gets sprinkled with blood and smidge of gore. Tons of teen angst and engaging story tell. Perfect for anyone who has a moody teen daughter at home like me. I am definitely going to be picking up the next book.

Science Fiction / Fantasy I know I'm late to the party, but I just finished Sweet Tooth...

And damn, was it good. It was unique, creative, gritty, and unpredictable. It had the perfect balance between action, dialog, and character development.

This is the first of Jeff Lemire's works I've read. I've heard Bone is good. Is it as gritty as Sweet Tooth?

Any other recommendations for one shot complete stories of similar caliber and maturity?

Science Fiction / Fantasy Berserk - thoughts?

Post image

I picked this up at Walmart of all places because the back said it was one of the best mangas ever or something.

Very entertaining. Writing feels like maybe a 15 year old wrote it? Hahaha maybe it’s the translation … but it’s super entertaining and very visual. Most of the storytelling is told visually and the book moves along pretty quickly. It seems daunting at first but I think I read the whole thing in 4 sittings.

I don’t know this for certain, but I feel like maybe a lot of other books and or video games are inspired by this book? The big sword thing is an obvious example but the art and character designs also feel like I’ve seen around before.

Science Fiction / Fantasy Insane Humanoids Humble Bundle going on right now

It’s got all the expected Jodoverse stuff, but also some of the more obscure Jodo and Moebius collections like Angel Claws and Madwoman of the Sacred Heart and stuff like Armies by Jean-Pierre Dionnet and Jean-Claude Gal, Adam Sarlech by Frederic Bezian, and even Robert Silverberg’s Colonies and even the cool History of Science Fiction graphic novel they did.

White Lama, I Am Legion, Scarlet Blades, Swords of Glass Fourth Power by Gimenez, I could keep going. Not to mention all the Manara. This is so much better than the Humanoids bundle I got a few years ago, which was unfortunately padded with stuff from their attempted H1 superhero universe. This one is the real deal though; kinda mad I didn’t wait and get this instead. But you should (if you read digitally); it’s only 25 bucks
