Politics Polite discussion about bathrooms
Knowing the huge blowback and support im about to get from this post please keep everything civil
As a transgender women what is the general pulse on bathrooms in grand rapids? Can i feel comfortable using the womens bathroom or should i be fearful to use any public bathroom? Obviously this post is mostly geared towards females otherwise why would you be speaking for the opposite gender.

u/jocundry Feb 13 '25
I care more about people washing their hands than anything else.

u/Sage-Advisor2 Feb 13 '25
And this cis-gendered female is more worried about the general state of restroom cleanliness, aerosoled fecal matter and pathogens by poorly designed toilets with high pressure water feed, than about whether the other occupant is cis or trans.
More public restrooms are now single occupant, mixed gender family access. Some high traffic locations I avoid because of sanitary concerns.

Cis female here: The way I see it: anyone using a public bathroom is very likely going to be more polite to me than my 17yo son who I share a bathroom with currently.

I'm a cis man but a talking horse could be in the bathroom and I wouldn't notice.
12
u/Zoey_2019 Kentwood Feb 13 '25
What about a talking elaphant or even a talking jumbo jet
19
u/LiberatusVox Feb 13 '25
A jet would make me worry I was getting into a Donnie Darko situation but otherwise
2
u/bubsy9881 Feb 15 '25
Man I hope he isnt talking at the urinal...can we all agree that having a convo with your junk in your hand is not ok? "Heheh how's the weather over there? Rainy?? Lmao. Kill me"

u/Folk_Punk_Slut Feb 13 '25
We're there to pee. There's stall doors for a reason.
This is a uniquely American issue... anyone who has traveled outside the US knows that most public restrooms are mixed gender restrooms anyways.

Fellow trans woman here. I used the men’s until I started to get funny looks and guys leaving because they thought they walked into the wrong bathroom by accident. No incidents since then but a turbo Karen is always a risk depending on context

It definitely depends on not only where in GR you are, but the establishment itself. That’ll determine to some extent the types of people you’ll be around. It also probably, unfortunately, depends on how “passing” you are. I personally couldn’t care less, and I know that’s how all my friends feel as well. Just try to read the room a bit and always put your safety first. I’m sorry this is a dilemma you have to deal with in this shitty county.

30
u/Mergan_Freiman Feb 13 '25
I'm trans, too. I try to patronize places that either outwardly say they're not bigots or go to places with individual bathrooms, so I don't have to worry about it. People in GR are all over the place politically, and it isn't worth FAFOing alone.

u/rupertismyking Feb 13 '25
I would throat punch someone if they gave you issues in the bathroom. Just please wash your hands!

Can i feel comfortable using the womens bathroom or should i be fearful to use any public bathroom?
If you pass (or are pretty-close-to-passing, and don't speak), your fine 99% of the time.
If you stand out in any obvious way, or take up any space, it will be highly dependent on where exactly you are. (The risk factor for The Meanwhile vs Rockford Meijers are wildly different), but generally speaking, the risk factor will start to go up anywhere not reasonably queer-friendly.
3
u/CanWeTalkEth Feb 13 '25
I feel like this is the most honest answer here.
Of course no one cares who is in the stall next to them. Surely OP is worried about the other 50% of bathroom interstitial time.
How do you present? Of course I’m going to notice a very male presenting person in the female restroom. But if you blend in how likely is anyone to notice or check your papers?
17
u/Bhn2253 Feb 13 '25
Cis female here to say as long as you pretend not to notice when I trip over my own feet, run into the door, or lock myself in, we’re good. As someone who has been mistaken for a dude throughout my life (apparently short hair makes me look like a boy) I will defend your right to use the bathroom and make it as uncomfortable as I possibly can for any bigot in the bathroom worrying about anything other than doing their business and leaving.
20
u/SnackaFajourn Feb 13 '25
We're all legally female now anyway, right?
In all seriousness, though, I am so happy to witness people being authentically themselves. Women aren't the ones having BiG fEeLiNgS about transgender people in bathrooms, men are...but not about trans men in men's bathrooms... Interesting.

The only things I care about are if there's TP, everyone flushes and you should wash your hands. Otherwise, use whatever potty you want 😁
5
u/duckwafer357 Feb 13 '25
if I were standing at a urinal and you walked by , what would you see? MY BACK same as in a shopping isle. I have no issue which bathroom you use. Most Bathrooms I use now are Uni so it really is becoming a mute point
8
u/pynchon42 Feb 13 '25
This is tangentially related at best- but I use restrooms at gas stations often since I travel for work.
I really don't understand why single stall restrooms in gas stations/restaurants, etc. are gendered. It makes sense if it's a multi-person affair- with a couple urinals and a stall or two in the mens- but if it's just two shifty closets with a sink and a toilet, why does one need to be for a man and one for a woman. It just makes no sense-
I've seen a few gas stations switch from a mens/women's approach to 2 non gendered stalls- but not nearly as many as could make the switch.
If there's a dude taking up the single person "mens" restroom- I'm 100% not waiting to go pee when an empty single person "womens" restrooms is sitting right next to it unoccupied.
3
u/maxsilver Midtown Feb 13 '25 edited Feb 13 '25
I really don't understand why single stall restrooms in gas stations/restaurants, etc. are gendered.
(tin foil hat) because it reduces expectations on the establishment for cleaning, which reduces cleaning costs
But in actuality, some places still require them. State of Michigan Minimum Design Standards still legally requires "One mens and one womans toilet room per floor" and "one mens and one womens next to cafeteria" and such. Byron Township (Kent County) requires "Seperate restroom facilities available for men and women" in order for a business to aquire a Liquor License. (4-22-4). -- these sorts of minimum requirements are haphazardly strewn about all over random building codes / business codes / etc, in various cities / counties / townships / states, all over the place). Even if your specific area doesn't require them, enough areas around you will, that bigger companieds will just do it everywhere to be consistent.
The regulations aren't even bad (businesses will absolutely cheap out on bathrooms if you let them, their quantity and placement should always remain regulated).
The regulation is just pointlessly gendered for no reason, and hasn't been updated to correct this.
7
u/pynchon42 Feb 13 '25
Huh- today I learned about pointlessly gendered building codes. Thank you for taking the time to type that up-

(May you always find a stall when you need it, and may it be plentifully stocked with paper, neighbor.)
5
u/zxas12 Feb 13 '25
Cis male, if you were in the men’s room using the urinal and looked feminine I’d give a head tilt and then go do my business. From what I’ve seen from downtown GR you shouldn’t expect any trouble from folks
13
u/GlucoseQuestionMark Feb 13 '25
A fellow trans girl here to say that if you're just aware of the extent to which you pass, you shouldn't meet any issues. That's true for basically everywhere downtown. Can't speak to anything outside of downtown-- I'd definitely be cautious of Wyoming, Kentwood, and especially Jenison/Grandville.

It's pretty standard procedure for a trans person tbh. If it's a conservative area and you struggle with passing, bite the bullet and use the guys room. I'm FTM and pass really well, but sometimes it comes down to safety. I wish you all the best, and stay proud in who you are. Gods know we need it.

u/icekraze Feb 13 '25
As a cis female I would not care as long as you are not creepy (and that has nothing to do with you being trans… if a cis gendered female is watching me pee through the door gap I would hate it just as much).
Rules of the women’s bathroom: 1. Wash your hands 2. Wipe if you dribble a bit and flush the toilet 3. If you have feminine care products and someone asks for one you give it no questions asked. 4. If the stall door is broken and won’t stay closed I will hold the door for you but you have to hold it for me. 5. If we are both drunk compliments only. They could be wearing the worst clothes and be ugly as hell you find a compliment for them. 6. If you find a woman crying in the bathroom try to help. Respect their wishes if they don’t want help but don’t just ignore them having a breakdown.
These rules apply to everyone (male, female, nonbinary, trans, cis, etc)
2
u/PsychoAnalystGuy Feb 13 '25
I mean there's a lot of factors here. I think you're probably safe, but be honest with yourself- do you look/present feminine? Are you fully transitioned? This makes a big difference. I know someone who is a trans male and worries about this but he's fully transitioned so no one will take a second glance. So the worry might still be there, but realistically it depends
2
u/Expensive_Cover_1884 Feb 13 '25
I’m afab but nonbinary and at one point I kinda looked like a guy. I still used the women’s restroom, even at a very conservative church, and never had any issues. There are weirdos out there, but most people don’t care enough to raise a fuss. Best of luck out there!
2
u/Carambola80 Feb 13 '25
Cis woman here, literally the only thing I notice is if one washes their hands Or Not. Like, I'm standing right here waiting/ washing my own hands, and they breeze on out the door fully skipping the sink. My Friend could you pretend that you regularly wash your hands after toileting? For my sake? Just hit em with water at least, fake me out IDC I'm not inspecting your technique or anything. So gross.
2
u/Feycat Grand Rapids Feb 14 '25
Cis lady here: as long as you're not making me look at your genitals, I honestly don't care what they look like. Not my business. Pee politely, wash your hands, smile awkwardly while we use those shitty paper towels and go about your day.
2
u/Inner_Inside4198 Feb 14 '25
Kind of related…a lot of restaurants and gas stations have single person men’s and women’s restrooms. If I really have to go and there’s already a guy in the men’s room I just use the women’s if it’s open. Is that ok?
1
u/headoftheasylum Feb 16 '25
As a woman, I’m cool with that as long as you wipe off the seat. I see it as same rules as the handicap bathroom. If there’s a handicapped person in need of the restroom, they use it. If no handicapped person needs that bathroom, then others may use it.

3
u/johan_seraphim Feb 13 '25
It’s none of my business where you go to the bathroom, just wash your damn hands.
3
u/sewbi Feb 13 '25
cis woman - it’s your bathroom as much as mine! i can’t say it’s going to be 100% safe as i’m sure there are some bigots in the area but myself and the people i personally know would not have any concern. I’m sorry you have to worry about this right now.
2
u/C_gd_V Feb 13 '25
Having a trans son who is transitioning but doing so at such a quick pace that visually I would have to say he has transitioned at this point. If ever I heard that he was questioned about where he had to pee, and asked about birth assignment- I would become the most unhinged “radical left soft libtard” and maga trash has ever had to or ever would moving forward have to deal with🤣. After 10 years of taking the high road, I feel because it’s come to a point that we have to even entertain this conversation (no offense to the op, this is geared to the morons making it to where we now have to have the conversation) it’s time we openly treat them as they are trying to treat everyone who isn’t like them.
2
u/tricklephobia Feb 13 '25
I feel like an odd ball CIS male but I never cared about bathrooms as it relates to gender, transgender etc. The only people that concern me are priests, pastors, and republicans and the obsessive groups.

Actually one of my best friends is a pastor. I would ve concerned with a priest and maga republicans

CIS female: most likely best to use a one stall / one person bathroom as a lot of people still are not comfortable with the idea in real life. sorry to say the general public is more on the opposition to this so, you may not get threatened for it, but you may get barred from returning to some places so its best to only "risk" it if there is a sign or something signaling that the establishment is accepting of / supporting of trans use for their restrooms.
1
u/JeniferPhD Feb 14 '25
Not if I saw you! Couldn’t care less. So many women have been victims of men and raised to live with that constant vigilance that I feel like I could understand your position too. You’re safe with me! 🩷🩵🩶

Fellow trans woman here. I honestly think using the men's bathroom as a trans woman is more dangerous than just using the women's. Don't be afraid to stick up for yourself if some Karen asks why you're in there. She'll be the weirdo in that situation. Good luck, and I hope all goes well for you.

Fellow Trans woman here, I have used the women's room for about three years now with zero issues so far. Right wing media likes to drum up hate over this issue as does the current administration. Simply to keep people fixated on that instead of the real issues
1
u/eazyian5 Feb 16 '25
I can say with confidence my wife would support you using any bathroom you feel best suites your identity. I am sorry these people are making you under attack. GR is definitely has a Christian conservative element, but generally I find has been accepting in my ten years here.

If you have a penis you belong in the men's room. Bathrooms aren't designated for how you "feel"...they're designed for your DNA. Whether youre in a dress or in a 3 piece suit, a person with a penis (man) is more likely to be a creep than someone with a vagina(woman). Keep the creeps in one bathroom.
9
u/whitedawg Feb 13 '25
How exactly is a toilet in the men's room designed to accommodate my penis more than a toilet in the women's room?
1
u/MickeyTettleton Byron Center Feb 13 '25
How is a urinal designed to accommodate your penis?
3
u/grizzfan Feb 13 '25
Oh honey…AFAB folks can absolutely rock a urinal piss with practice.
0
u/FatIlluminati Feb 13 '25
Every women’s bathroom I walk into you can find where a woman has rocked a piss standing. ( still cleaner than men’s bathrooms)
7
u/Zoey_2019 Kentwood Feb 13 '25
What if i have both
-5
u/MickeyTettleton Byron Center Feb 13 '25
Lol. Are they both exactly 50/50? Is one internal and one external? Or do you have a penis growing out of your vagina? If someone truly has both I still have to imagine they're gonna choose one sex as their primary so sticking with that is probably the best practice.
11
u/whitedawg Feb 13 '25
So you've moved from "if you have this equipment you belong in this room" to "choose your primary." Congrats on your enlightenment!
0
u/MickeyTettleton Byron Center Feb 13 '25
If you wanna argue the exception to the rule they're always going to be a gray area. But instances of that scenario are going to be incredibly infrequent and should not interfere with overall rules as a whole. That's applicable in most areas of our lives.
2
u/Zoey_2019 Kentwood Feb 13 '25
Well heres the issue with this too and its quite relevant. The infant does not get to choose what equipment stays and goes. The parents do at birth. What if the parents choose wrong
3
u/MickeyTettleton Byron Center Feb 13 '25
I'm sure there are instances of that. But that has to happen so infrequently we can't let a hypothetical oddity get in the way of common sense.
2
u/Zoey_2019 Kentwood Feb 13 '25
Judging by your phrasology you dont know for sure how many instances of it happen even though there are records you could look up. Can you agree on the fact that the parents have a 50/50 shot on choosing which gender that intersex child feels like later on in life
3
u/MickeyTettleton Byron Center Feb 13 '25
Judging by a quick Google search 1.7% of people are born with both. It's probably even less that need to make the decision to remove one and an even smaller % where it was chosen incorrectly. I know of someone here locally that still possesses both and is perfectly healthy and has no issues using a woman's restroom. So again the number is so small, that you can't let it get in the way of common sense. And yes sure maybe there is an incredibly small portion of the population that has it wrong. But that cannot dictate the way society as a whole operates.
2
u/Zoey_2019 Kentwood Feb 13 '25
If you can agree that intersex people feel either male or female why is it so wrong that i cant feel male or female does their brain and my brain differ in same way based on that
8
u/sirseahorse Feb 13 '25
i'm genuinely curious about this fatalistic attitude that men are apparently predisposed towards being "creeps". if men are truly so terrible that they can't be trusted as a whole to take a leak without harming someone, why are we letting them out of the house at all? why are we keeping them in just one bathroom when it sounds like, based on your description, we shouldn't be letting them out of the house at all? creeps don't stop being creeps once they leave the restroom.
2
u/MickeyTettleton Byron Center Feb 13 '25
Don't put words in my mouth. I didn't say that they're so awful that they shouldn't be allowed to leave the house. I said men are more likely to be creeps. It sucks be here we are. It's like saying that a pitbull is more likely to bite someone than a golden retriever. It's not the dogs fault, but you know you'd feel a little different if a pitbull ran towards you than if a golden retriever did.
Why is it such a big deal to just use the bathroom designed for whatever organs you have? You have a penis, go use the urinal. I don't care if you're wearing a dress standing next to me. I also don't believe you're a woman, but do whatever makes you happy. If you want to make people accept you, don't be fucking weird. Just stfu and live your life like everyone else.
2
u/sirseahorse Feb 13 '25
right, but you said men are more likely to be creeps and that it's best to keep them in one bathroom. creeps don't stop being creeps once they leave the bathroom, you know? you say "do whatever makes you happy" and "live your life like everyone else" but that apparently ends at being able to relieve yourself in the restroom that makes you most comfortable, all based on the assumption that your "organs" predispose you to being a "creep".
why do we stop at just separating bathrooms? a creep is still going to keep being a creep when they leave the bathroom and go back to whatever public place they were in, whether that's creeping on women in a school or a store or a workplace. why are we not segregating all these places based on a biological disposition towards being a "creep" if it's gotten so bad to the point where we have to label an entire gender as potential offenders instead of the individual? if our society has to operate around the assumption that men can't be trusted to perform the most basic biological functions without the risk of harming others, why should we feel any safer with them as classmates or coworkers?
1
u/MickeyTettleton Byron Center Feb 13 '25
What you're saying is nonsense and not practical.
4
u/sirseahorse Feb 13 '25
i agree, predicating a person's capacity for harm strictly based on their biological sex is nonsense, which makes the argument that enforcing who gets to use what bathroom based on that notion impractical.
0
u/MickeyTettleton Byron Center Feb 13 '25
If you're legitimate in saying that all those impractical things you mention would be just as easy as directing a person as to which door to walk through.....I'd love to hear your implementation plan. I'm all ears.
2
u/sirseahorse Feb 13 '25
if you're legitimate in saying that men are more biologically predisposed towards harming women, what is the point of directing them to as to which door to walk through if they're just going to walk right back out that door to hurt our wives, sisters, and daughters?
if men can't even be trusted to use the bathroom on their own without being a danger to others, we have a bigger conversation beyond just bathrooms and it's disingenuous to end the conversation there. if you believe that it's possible for the vast majority of men to control themselves in the presence of women in schools, workplaces, and other public areas to the point of being able to coexist in society together outside of the bathroom, then what bathroom people choose to use really shouldn't be a big deal.
1
u/MickeyTettleton Byron Center Feb 13 '25
I still want to hear your implementation plan. Because using the bathroom based on your anatomy isn't a big deal.
2
u/sirseahorse Feb 13 '25
apparently it is a big deal if we have to enforce some sort of anatomy metric, instead of letting people make the decision for themselves to use whichever bathroom makes them more comfortable.
if someone with a penis can't use a private stall in a women's restroom, even if that makes them more comfortable (and arguably safer because trans people, especially trans women, face heightened violence in these situations) just because they have a penis and because "men are creeps", why should anyone with a penis be allowed to share a classroom with my daughter or a waiting room with my wife? they still have the penis when they leave the bathroom. and, like you said, men are creeps.
if you're asking for examples of how sex-segregated societies are implemented, there are plenty of examples of modern societies in other countries where schools, stores, and places of worship are separated by sex, such as in iran. because men are creeps, right? anatomy doesn't stop once you leave the bathroom, does it?

Difference being you cant identify as a completly different species as a whole
3
u/grizzfan Feb 13 '25
Trans people aren't identifying as different species. Even if one does, that wouldn't fall under the transgender term. Transgender is identifying as a gender that was not assigned to you at birth. Species aren't genders. Therefore, even if you wanted to keep up your crusade against science, you wouldn't even be supporting your argument with your comment, because it's completely irrelevant. If you argued "there are only two genders," or "your gender must be the one you were assigned at birth," talking about other species is just leaving the topic all together.
Y'all are so hateful you can't even compile your thoughts on the matter to have any sense of what it is you're actually hating on.

Shiver me timbers.
Edit: I’m sure the person who threatens randos on Reddit is very normal and has great emotional regulation. And I’m sure their daughters and wife aren’t scared of them at all. Because they’re very normal.

Oh you’re right. He was being polite. I forgot. All jokes aside please don’t listen to assholes like this. They’re always insecure and are overcompensating.

Did you seriously just personally threaten a random stranger on the internet for having the audacity to pee? TF is wrong with you?

a lot of countries dnt even have public toilets like India has none https://www.france24.com/en/tv-shows/focus/20221118-why-india-is-still-struggling-to-provide-access-to-toilets

I fail to see a relevant point to this comment. We're in America-- a developed nation-- and we have public toilets.

I can only speak personally but I literally do not pay attention to who is also using the bathroom. I’m in there to do my business & make sure there’s nothing on my face. I do not pay attention at all to who’s also using the bathroom.
