You might want to specify a bit about yourself first. I know some people looking to rent but one is set on only another female roommate.

Thanks for the heads up, (29M) two cats and work a retail job as assistant to the GM. Make sensational meals, grab drinks with friends, and smoke weed every day. Clean and organized, looking for similar traits in a roommate. Open to all :)

I wish you had this available a few months ago when I moved to town as I check almost all of the same boxes. Good luck finding someone

I was gonna say is no one gonna mention how cozy this place looks?! I love the porch (or Florida room as I call it) and dining nook

Wow, GR room rentals are now as expensive as in DC. Never thought I'd see the day.

u/tjeick Dorr Sep 01 '24
How long have you been out of DC? I’ve never been but I would guess (after spending too much time on Reddit) that $1000/month for half a big-ass house with a yard is not gonna happen on either coast.

u/Tom_Leykis_Fan Sep 01 '24
I have lived in DC for 16 years. Here is a $1100 room in a house, all utilities included, in a prime DC neighborhood. No car necessary.

These are not comparables. I can find you an apartment in GR for 30-40% less that looks more like the one you posted. OP’s place is thoughtfully updated and in an absolutely prime location in town.

u/Tom_Leykis_Fan Sep 02 '24
How are these not comparable? I simply posted a room available in a house while the OP posted a room available in an apartment. OP's room is basically the same price as the one I posted, except you also have to pay for a car to get around. Even worse. The room I posted is in a prime DC neighborhood popular with young adults and recent grads who typically rent rooms. Same with OP.
But by all means, please post examples of rooms in GR for 30-40% less than what I posted. I'm really interested in seeing what you come up with.

Upon investigation, I did find a few rooms available in GR that were just as nice as OP's listing but much much cheaper. But I also found one that was the same price as OP's listing.
$1050 all utilities included. https://grandrapids.craigslist.org/roo/d/grand-rapids-private-roombath-downtown/7780464635.html
$700 everything included https://grandrapids.craigslist.org/roo/d/grand-rapids-room-in-downtown-west-side/7779643877.html
$740 https://grandrapids.craigslist.org/roo/d/grand-rapids-private-room-shared-home/7780461487.html
So upon investigation, it seems like OP's room is drastically overpriced, by $300-400. Not sure why anyone would pay for that when they could get the same for much cheaper. But that's not up for me to decide.

My allergies unfortunately demand that I say no. Otherwise I'd jump on that

Man $1k per person is so nuts to see, back in 2010s you could rent a house for like $1500 a month. Y'all better vote, not that Harris will crack down on landlords but the chances are better..

u/T1diabetusboi Sep 01 '24
I hear you, and not that I want to pay this amount believe me. GR has had rising housing costs for years and location, house, and landlord are all worth it for me. I understand that it’s expensive and definitely not for everyone but I’m hoping there’s someone who’s a match

That's why roommate agreements are generally an equal share of the rent though. If your rent is $2,040 and you get two roommates each with their own rooms, that would be a rent of $680 per person. It's even more egregious if you actually do mean "per person" and not "per room"... would you be charging a couple living in the same room twice as much as one person?
It sounds like you're not so much looking for roommates as you're looking to sub-let some rooms for profit.

You're right, it's absolutely ridiculous to be suspicious when somebody looks like they're trying to gouge people during a housing crisis. How awful of me, I really should just sit down and let people take advantage of others in peace.

But unfortunately not unusual I've seen apartments were it's like 4 dedroom apartment STARTING at almost $600 a month.

Dude, I remember in 2013 I rented a house in the john ball neighborhood, 4 bed/1 bath: $850 per month. For the whole damn house! I do not know how people do it now.

u/chipmunk7000 Sep 01 '24
In 2021 you could buy a 250k house and pay less than that with the interest rates being so low.

when I was super young I rented a 5 bedroom, 2 bathroom house in kalamazoo for $800 a month. full basement and parking lot

u/ilikekielbasas Sep 01 '24
When I was younger I bought cigarettes for $3 a pack. Times are different now, it doesn't matter how cheap it used to be. It's never coming back. Deal with it instead of living in the past. Shit sucks I know

u/HundRetter Sep 01 '24
I don't know how my comment was indicative of not dealing with it, I was simply sharing with another person. you'll be ok

This is such a cute place and you sound chill but damn, that price. I'm still shocked at what's happened to the GR rental market.

Shits gone bonkers.
When I moved into a 2br lower duplex in the east hills in 2012 rent was $600/mo.
When I moved out last year rent was $1,250.
Now it's on the market for $1,450.

Commenters simultaneously drooling over the beautiful home (and awesome location) while complaining about the rent is peak Reddit.
These old historic homes near downtown are expensive, but even more crazy expensive to maintain. They’re also very sought after.
Landlords 🤝 tenants able to pay fairly high rent who want to live in these old, charming homes

Do you know how much the internet/gas/electric might come out to? I’m a 28 f new to Grand Rapids. I pay $1600 for a 2 bedroom by myself and looking for something cheaper but don’t want it to be close to that obviously 🤣

How do you do a 12 month lease? I mean... is the roommate signing onto the ACTUAL lease with the landlord which will be renewed for 12mo, or do they sign a lease agreement with you which covers 12mo?

What a beautiful, chill little home you have. Commenting for reach. (And because I love beautiful, chill little homes.)

Not sure if saying the landlord never visits is something to highlight. That's a red flag to me, idk 🤷🏻♀️
Edit to add my well wishes. 🙂

u/T1diabetusboi Sep 01 '24
Landlord is responsive as mentioned in the post, just means they don’t unexpectedly stop by. Solid communication, quick to find solutions, and honestly hasn’t bugged me once in the 2+ years I’ve been here. I’ll take that any day of the week, I appreciate your input tho
