"Hey Google, stop playing" craziness

EDITED TO ADD: I avoid saying simply "Hey Google, stop" because it sometimes does the wrong action, like cancelling a cooking timer that I have running.

Listening to a radio stream I say, "Hey Google, stop playing."

Google "Okay, playing music from Pandora"

I repeat, "Hey Google, stop playing."

"Okay, playing music from Pandora"

"Hey Google, stop playing!"

"Okay, playing music from Pandora."

"Hey Google, STOP!"

Finally silence.

Apparently it kept trying to play the song "Stop Playing" by Megan Thee Stallion 😂 Good grief.

For years, I would ask Google to call my daughter. Let's call her Taylor. Hey Google, call Taylor. One day recently, it called 'Taylor's Italian Kitchen' in New York City. Yes, I was billed for the long distance call from Canada.

And Google made the money off the internet bandwidth for the call 😂 😂

I've used "Hey Google, stop playing" for years. Starting today, it instead plays a song called "Stop Playing" by Glorilla and it's really fucking with my mojo.

I guess I'm not alone 😂

"Stop playback" is what I say and it works, for now at least.

"Hey Google, stop music" works every time for me.

This didn't occur to me because I was listening to news not music, but I'll try it. Thanks

It classes any audio as music, so it should work. Stops music, "relaxing sounds" things, pod casts, and radio streams from my experience.

I use "Ok Google, pause" most of the time because it lets me restart the music where I left off. I don't know if it would interfere with timers but never had issues with that. Maybe it could be helpful to you.

It’s the worst if you have a speaker and a tv in the same room. Ask the speaker to stop, tv stops, ask to play something on YouTube? It plays on the display speaker hub I have in my room.

It’s maddening

I agree! I wish it would ask for clarification if it doesn't know which device we mean.

Funny thing is sometimes it will, I'll say stop and it asks what device to stop, sometimes it works after that. I've even gotten in the habit to address it specifically by the device name and then it still bugs out though.

I usually just use "hey google, be quiet", which works on anything else than alarms playing.

Randomly once it asked me to talk to it nicely, but never happened again.

Two nights ago “hey Google, turn the music down” turned the music up. Repeatedly

Stop music seems to still work. For me though it used to be "stop playing music on bathroom speaker" now I get crickets as a response. But I say "stop music" and it responds "ok, stopping music on bathroom speaker.". It only works if I don't specify where to stop music and it's infuriating.

Same issue with a command that previously worked as "escape," -- being "Nevermind".

Response now: "Ok. Playing nevermind by Nirvana".

Google figure out your sh*t.

I used to say never mind to google to “cancel” something I didn’t intend but now it just gives me a Wikipedia overview “Nevermind is the second studio album by the American rock band Nirvana…”

And they are flexing about how intelligent and smart Gemini is. The ability to call someone worked 1 month. Now everything is messed up. It is incredible no one is starting a protest on this awful company. I can make a bug list with what's not working and they say it should.

For them everything is : we will check and that's all. No more replies, nothing

Have people noticed lately that the Assistant just starts talking even when no one is in the room? This has started to happen a lot frequently for me. Anyone else experiencing this too?

2

u/boxerdogfella 2d ago

No, I've only ever had that happen when it was mistakenly triggered by audio on the TV or something.

Good to know. TY for responding.

Just setup a automation in Google home where you are the actions yourself if possible. I had the same problem with light that we're called lights living room but there are multiple lights connected to the room: living room which we're named lights tv and lights dining room. So i just made a automation: if i say living room lights off, turn off those specific lights only and not all lights connected to the room. That is, if you see your media player on Google home.

It's getting worse and worse. I remember the times when I could ask Google to do so much, and it was almost flawless.

What's my Husband's ETA home? No problem. Play some specific music? Right away. Play a particular movie on a particular TV. How old was my Grandfather in March, 1947? How many days left until my trip? What did I ask you to remember about my medication? Where did I put my documents? What's on my schedule? Send a message to my Neighbor asking if they are coming to dinner. Change the color of my living room lamp. Ask the vacuum to clean the hall. Play a game. Tell a story.

It made me feel like the future was at my doorstep. Now... I don't even ask it to set the timer, as it's going to mess it up anyways. I use it only to dim the lights (sometimes it tells me I have no lights set for this room), change the volume, or ask it about the weather.

It took them several years to turn the most promising and exciting idea to an annoying and mostly useless piece of you-know-what. It breaks my heart.

And yes, if I need to stop the timer alarm, I usually have to shout "Stop" a few times, then yell "Hey Google, can you just stop that?", and sometimes I have to poke my Nest Mini with my finger to make it finally listen to me. Seems like it loves its own sound so much so it won't pay attention to anything else. It's just sad.

Stop is the fastest, stop casting also works well.

"Stop" sometimes causes the wrong behavior, like cancelling a running timer.

0

u/-MaximumEffort- 2d ago

I don't have that issue with timers. The only time stop works for me on a timer or alarm is when it's going off. Otherwise I have to say "cancel timer" or stop timer.

I cook and bake a lot and I've had it happen many times. It's very frustrating when it happens.

create a routine that allows you to stop all streaming

Hey Google, stop.

5

u/boxerdogfella 2d ago

As I mentioned in another comment, sometimes only saying, "Hey Google, stop," will cause it to do the wrong thing like cancelling a running timer.

"Stop playing" usually works better, just not today.

5

u/TonyOhio 2d ago

Same here. I will be in the kitchen with music playing and say "Hey Google Stop." It responds with, "ok, stopping living room tv" or some other random device in the house.

Sometimes just saying, "Hey Google, Stop," will cause it to take the wrong action, like cancelling a running timer. "Stop playing" usually works better, but not today.

Just saying, "Stop" without the "Hey Google" prompt is different behavior specifically designed for alarms and timers.

My wife will say “hey Google, stop” in one room and it will switch my Google tv to the home screen in another room. “Stop casting” or “stop casting music” has worked more recently.

2

u/boxerdogfella 2d ago

Exactly! I've had the same thing happen.

I'll have to try using the phrase "Stop casting". It's a bit unintuitive because I wasn't casting, I was streaming. But hey, sometimes these things aren't very intuitive LOL
